That intro sequence was absolutely insane! Such great editing, very well done! And I gotta be honest... I always played TR on Playstation since I didn't own a PC as a child and always came back to it when replaying the classics. And I wasn't aware that the save crystals were exclusive to the PS version. The devs have been cooking something truely special for console players back in the day!:D

Ah I didn't notice this video! Quite a valiant effort to judge them, as I feel many work better in context of other levels, which influences my feelings of them. Such as the four challenges in Hall of Seasons, they can't be very high because they're just challenge rooms, but in the context of Hall of Seasons I love them. I'd actually put Neptune's Hall the lowest of them because it's so "normal" :D I *love* the other three though, especially Breath of Hades, maybe because many peple hate it so I feel the need to defend it XD I just don't find it that bad, especially with the short jumps (sadly some players might not be aware of that move). And Sanctuary of Flame is better to cross only after the flame wave goes through :D I admit I never cared much for Aquatic Research Area, I should pay more attention to it next time (I mostly see it as a necessary level to lead me to the cool Vault of Trophies level). Glad you had so much positive stuff to say about many of the levels, even those ranked low. When the gameplay isn't much, there's always the atmosphere to enjoy! Gosh I love AoD <3

Never really grow up with TR, i had TR3 as a kid and i couldn't beat a single level, i hated it and I hated its controls so i always wondered why people loved it so much. In 2020 I rediscovered the series and played through the classic games via the pc ports and i have to admit, after learning the controls and being able to save your games as many times as you want, whenever you want makes these games super cozy to play, they're very chill especially TR1 Which is my favorite of the classic series. I was also able to beat TR3 on pc and had a lot of fun, way more than TR2 in my opinion, TR3 goes back to temples and wild settings while 2 focused more on janky combat against humans and urban settings. However i do understand why TR3 was so polarizing back when it was released, the ps version is brutal and way too dark (could be because we do play it on LCDs rather than CTRs but still.) and it gets really trolly with the traps. Thank god the remaster takes from the PC versions, because of that I still prefer TR3 over 2, though TR1 is still my absolute favorite and definitely a confort game, I'm glad i was able to rediscover this series in my adult years

I played TR3 on Playstation as well, many years after my first playthrough on PC. I did because I wanted to have that challenge, too :D The thing that I must say is better in some levels, compared to PC, is the lighting, particularly in levels like High Security Compound. It gives the levels so much more atmosphere to have it dark in places, where it should be dark. Thames Wharf is another example. I played it on a HD-TV, so the brightness settings were fundamentally good enough so that I never was in a situation, where I couldn't see anything. Good video and congrats on beating the game on this platform :) Bonus fun fact: the T-Rex has a unique mechanic. If Lara ignites a flare and throws it away in the area, where the T-Rex runs around, when it still burns, the T-Rex will walk up to it and examine it and it will ignore Lara completely :D

Both LOL and KUDOS for the tone of the video - but I think I can also relate to the pain you had to go through 🙂 I tried a few self-imposed restrictions on my gameplay as a way to challenge myself (*) - e.g. use pistols only, not use pistols (since L2 or L3) at all, not use health packs, etc.. - but probably the most difficult one was completing each Core Design era TR game without saving during a level. In the end I managed to succeed (except for TRLR, which I didn't try - yet, at least), but repeatedly - and much more often than I would have been OK with - the experience was really frustrating. Yeah, all those jumps that just did not happen though I could swear I pressed the jump key properly, all those unintentional falls from otherwise safe ledges, all those silly "I forgot there was a trap" moments made me bang my head against the table every now and then. Sweet memories anyway 🙂 (*) Credit where credit's due - at one point, I have noticed Matt from "BadAssGamez" (his discontinued YT channel) doing something similar in one of his videos (or livestreams?), so I took the inspiration and tried a few variations on that idea.

I just beat this game recently on playstation one. When i was kid i couldnt beat this game. When the remasters came i still wanted to beat this original version. It was hard as hell and its funny that in the end i had the same situation in the last level. I used my last save crystal in the middle of fight but i didnt know/remember that the level will not end after the boss fight and i was so terrified in the last part that i will die somehow 😄 when the level and the game ended, i was so relieved and it felt like an amazing accomplishmet. Not only did you decide to play the PS version, but you also went for all secrets and didn't go to Nevada first? A masochist indeed 😭 I never played it on PS but the save system and the super dark levels make me not want to anyway😅 And also the fact that I'd have to learn to play with a controller after 25 years of keyboard-based muscle memory for Classic TRs. It's interesting that you call the PC version graphically superior though because the one thing people seem to praise in TR3 for PS is the graphics. Anyway, congratulations on beating this challenge! But the fact that someone like you struggled with the number of save crystals really makes me weep for people who played it for the first time on PS.

Hahaha! 😂 Yeah... And I had the same issue for the longest time. Going from keyboard controls to PlayStation controls seemed impossible to me, for many years, but now I prefer playing Tomb Raider with a controller actually. The PC version looks much smoother, and is brighter. The PlayStation version is very pixelated, with stretching jagged textures. I really wish the classic versions in the remaster came with bilinear filtering, so they looked more like the PC versions. Thank you! 😃

It's tension and brutality have long become too much a part of the game for me now. I grew up with the DOS version in my childhood. I found out that you don't need to grab the rhino tails after the first ostrich section, you can just grab the hippo's ear and skip that section of the level. The waterfall in Hakuna Matata was indeed notorious. I did manage to get up the waterfall by easily by memorising the log patterns, but jumping on the logs that sank at the bottom was impossible for me to overcome. Kifo Mtego would have been a more appropriate name for the jungle level, which translates to Death Trap. I could never finish the final because like you I didn't have a manual that would tell me the throwing combo, so I was stuck hitting Scar infinitely.

  • @AxMania

It gets even worse when you realise on NG+, the ONLY way to heal is by saving your game. In case you were wondering, yes, you can get to All Hallows in NG+, but I wouldn't recommend it. The level starts with all your ammo and weapons, but no medipacks. You can save repeatedly, though, but finishing the level on NG+ is not required if you have the initial trophy for finishing All Hallows already. Also on NG+, all 'friendlies' except the Damned in Lud's Gate are either hostile from the start or become hostile at a certain point, so those friendly monkeys in Jungle, now the enemy. The prisoners in High Security Compound turn on you after a certain point. The soldiers in Crash Site would rather shoot YOU than the dinosaurs trying to eat them, and the flamethrowers in RX-Tech Mines would rather set YOU on fire than the mutants. Since you're going for all trophies, let me, as someone who's done it twice, tell you a few things. 'Aichmophobia' will probably send you on a killing spree. 'Crushin' Krishna' barely seems worth a Silver. 'Resourceful Attorney' is easier than it looks, 'but Limbo Master' is not, as it counts across High Security Compound and Area 51. You can still get 'Lost Souls be Damned' if you run over the bikers via quad bike, for some reason. You can also use the UPV harpoons and still qualify for the 'Incredibly Hard Boiled' trophy, so no more repeats of the bullshittery in TR2. Since you are afraid of snakes, it probably won't put your mind at ease to know that you not only have to avoid getting bitten by them across the India and Nevada chapters for the 'Rikki-Tikki-Tavi' trophy, but you also need to kill EVERY SINGLE ONE in the Caves of Kaliya level for the 'Snake Charming' trophy. Yes, even the ones in the maze. You also need to kill every single mutant in RX-Tech mines for the 'Pest Control' trophy, but any killed by the flamethrowers still count. In fact, combine this with the 'Who Goes There' trophy and make the flamethrowers kill seven of them. But perhaps the biggest challenge of all comes in the Meteorite Cavern trophy, which tasks you with getting out of the crater and making it to the compound with the last of Willard's men WITHOUT the artifacts. This was brutal, both times I did this. 'Wilderness Survivor' comes close, which tasks you with making sure EVERY soldier survives at the end of Crash Site, but even that was easy when I just blew open the wall and made a beeline to the exit and hoping for the best. There are a few handy shortcuts in Jungle and Thames Wharf that you should get familiar with for the speedrun trophy, and also for the 'I'm Just a Local' trophy, which tasks you with finishing Thames Wharf in a minute or less. Yes, that is possible. On the bright side, not every trophy is doom and gloom. There is one for swimming with the orcas in Area 51. However, there is the 'Like a Naive Child' trophy where you have to die to the fake large medipack quicksand trap and the button to start fire traps in Coastal Village, as well as the large medipack/rolling spike cylinder trap part way through the fire trial in Lost City of Tinnos. Yeah, this platinum will likely send you to therapy.

At that time, I did not have a computer and I did not know that playing on it, you can save the game anywhere. The fourth part disappointed me with all these catacombs and eternal darkness. I wanted some kind of space, nature, rivers, waterfalls... All this beauty and diversity, which was in the third part. I really like that in the third part the levels differ in the general atmosphere. And the fifth part turned out to be some kind of set of short missions. Although I also really like the second part, I believe that the third is the pinnacle of the evolution of classic Tomb Riders.

"Gaming masochist" sounds appropriate given how frustrating the previous challenges have also been. True TR experts put themselves through hell before allowing themselves to feel one crumb of accomplishment. As God intended. There's always the blindfolded run though.
