Top 10 pranks aboard a Canadian Coast Guard ship

What better way to enjoy your trip aboard a ship than to make the life of your coworkers as miserable as possible? I’m talking about pranks, and I sure had my fair share. When they are bored, crew members can be shifty, always in search of an easy target for their entertainment. I guess there is nothing better to do when you are stuck at sea.

The steam bucket one is a great form of initiation for new people imo. You send them on a wild goose chase to meet all the important people and see where the different departments are at. Mine lasted about 4 hours but I knew everyone in my chain of command, where their offices were located, what their names were and what their jobs were at the end of it, and they all got to know the new guy in the unit as well.

The two ships I was on in the U.S. Navy, USS ENTERPRISE (CVN-65) and USS BLUE RIDGE (LCC-19) were both somewhat larger than your typical Coast Guard vessel. Now each compartment on the ship will have placards placed near the doors giving the location of that space using a standardized 3 dimensional coordinate system. Thus once one gets used to it, it simplifies finding one's way around the ship. One of the pranks to play on a newbie is to send them off to find a space which doesn't exist.

Having worked in emergency services most of my life your absolutely correct...if your being pranked, the butt of the occasional joke or allowed to be involved in the traditions and laughter...it means your fitting in with the culture and they trust you to take it in good spirits. Thats huge.

the steam bucket prank reminds so much of something people used do to eachother in the us navy where'd they send new guys to the division division office to get an item called "oho nuts" to do some maintenance.... well oho stands for ordinance handling officer... so you could imagine how that went

As a retired American coastie. We used to love having the "boots" dress up in aluminum foil and stand on the focsol (sp?) to calibrate the radar. Or, have the boot standing watch on the quarterdeck make a pipe "Whoever has female clothing, lay to the laundry room to remove the same". A great way to break up the daily routine.

The honorable mention reminds me of a fellow biology PhD student. He was just settling in, didn't have his office space yet, but was eager to cracking with his ornithology project. So he was sitting in the computer-pool room and did a google picture search for Parus major, also known as Great Tit.

Ah yes, pranking your coworkers in the military. It's a rite of passage. And its true, if people fuck with you that means they like you. The steam bucket one is hilarious. It combines the air sample, ID-10-T form, wearing your full PPE and getting K9P. Beautiful.

A close friend worked on a US aircraft carrier where they had their own version of the steam prank. They regularly used 'bucket of blue steam' to refer to a bucket of liquid water for actual work and at one point he was ordered to get a bucket of 'red steam' (just steam).

I know a guy who used to work in a kitchen as a cook. Their big tradition was sending the new guy out to another restaurant in town (who would send their newbies to them as well) to get some 'liquid ice'. When I did security at a big installation downtown we used to call a medical alert on the 13th floor of one of our towers and get the newbie to carry the heavy medical bag up (which also included a canister of oxygen inside). And they had to use the stairs because 'you can't access it from the elevators'. 'Cept there was no 13th floor in that building.

the steam buckets one reminds me of my days as a kitchen porter, we had the steamer bag prank. apparently they were sealed bags of flavoured steam for a fish dish, got sent to the general manager who sent me to his mate down the road at another restaraunt who then sent me back with ziplock sealed bags of air and a lemon for good measure. Chefs from my workplace could see me out the window carrying what were essentially balloons and a lemon in my bare hands.

Buckets of Propwash and Jetwash were our Steam Buckets on the flightline. We'd also snag your Military ID if you left it in your computer's card reader and do the same stuff they did with your toothbrush. I once stood on our 6.5 ft tall former basketball player planning section lead's shoulders to tape the new guy's ID to the ceiling. We also taped one guy's to the ceiling of the breakroom over the dartboard, with a color copy of it stuck to the board with a dart to give him a heart attack before he realized it was a fake.

At my unit (loading planes) we'd say that we need to test exhaust of the K50's because of Evniroment Canada regulations, so they'd need to hold a Garbage bag over the exhaust and take the bag of Exhaust to Line Officer who'd then send them off on a goose chase for the PPM Tester.

Toothbrush retaliation was good... I should test it on my ship 😅 Once when I was a deck cadet I told second officer a story I had read from old seafaring book about how cabinboy was pranked with a case where coal sample had to be taken from boiler room to chef officers cabin... Next day this same second officer sent me to engine room to help 4. Engineer to carrie fuel samples the same way 🤣🤣 when I cracked the prank I was very embarrassed and allso quite angry 😅

Second interesting prank I had was done by my classmates when we were deck cadets on ro ro ferry. They connected my cabins shower room door with shower valve so that when I opend my shower room door then shower started spraying in my direction... I was lucky because I was awake at the time and I didn't get very wet but I retaliated with the same prank on them at night (shower and toilet were in same room) so when my classmate woke up at night to take a leak he got very nice and unexpected cold wakeup shower with quite extensive need to clean up the wet cabin floor because sleepy people usually don't react very quickly 😅😅

throwing anything overboard that is even partially made of plastic is a serious offence and could land someone in real trouble :( one of my colleagues once accidentally dropped his key card to his cabin in the sea and chose to wait until we arrived to the next port and then reported that he lost it on shore because there could have been serious fines for polluting the ocean. however I worked on a cruise ship, not sure about the exact rules of the coast guard.
