Welcome to the new list, this time discussing the greates gladiators Rome has ever seen!
Gladiators were armed fighters who entertained audiences fighting with other gladiators, condemned criminals, wild animals. Gladiators could sometimes be volunteers willing to risk everything fighting in the arena. Most of them were treated as slaves.
Games involving the gladiators lasted for about a thousand years.
Gladiators games were a rich business for owners and trainers, and for politicians aswell..
Shows involving gladiators' fights were organized throughout the Republic and beyond.
First types of gladiator were named after Rome's enemies of that time: the Samnite, Thracian and Gaul. The Samnite and the Gaul were renamed Secutor and Murmillo, after the Roman Empire conquered those populations.
The trade in gladiators was empire-wide and supervised by Roman officials. Rome's had a large supply of prisoners due to its military success, and those prisoners could sometimes be sold to the market and become gladiators.
Gladiators were sometimes ex-slaves condemned to the arena, to gladiator schools or games as punishment for crimes.
Female gladiators appeared rarely and were regarded as a symptom of corrupted Roman appetites, morals and womanhood.

I'll double check, but I think it makes more sense that they used wooden. I remember seen them using blunts in the movie gladiator but blunt steel swords can still kill more easily than thin and ligh wooden swords. As it happens, a blunt sword can still cut. I doubt they would have taken the chances. But I'll double check and update with a comment if I was wrong.

Certainly not in the top 10, but an intersting addition would be Shimon ben Lakish, a third century Rabbi and Talmud scholar who during his youth fought beasts at the arena.

I think Flamma should be #1 based on his records and fame as a gladiator. But it’s also understandable to give Spartacus the 1st spot due to the legendary and insane rebellion that he lead!

Watch the lindybeige's video on gladiators. They were mostly just actors. This would be equivalent to modern day WWE. They had helmets that hid their faces so they could talk to each other while fighting to coordinate cool moves and stuff. Btw Spartacus was not his real name I believe his name still remains unknown

Your description of Crixus's death is different from what I heard. From the sources I heard, Crixus and his men were actually able to drive back the Roman force that attacked them, but they celebrated too early. The men got into a drunken stupor, and the Romans (who had actually managed to regroup after being pushed back) came back and killed them all while they were lying there drunk.

Metatron i'm confused about the role of venator and bestiarius: what is the basic difference between the two? I thought venator was the beast hunter and the bestiarius the one which trained/feed/ the animals... great video anyway, thank you a lot for the choice
