Gladiators - Types Classes and Equipment

There were many different kinds of Gladiators, actual classes which would differ in Equipment, weapons, armours and fighting style. A Gladiator was an armed combatant who entertained audiences in the Roman Republic and Roman Empire in violent confrontations with other gladiators, wild animals, and condemned criminals. Some gladiators were volunteers who risked their lives and their legal and social standing by appearing in the arena. Most were despised as slaves, schooled under harsh conditions, socially marginalized, and segregated even in death. Here I review the most famous ones :D

    Trax -> from Greek "Thrax" = "a Thracian" Murmillo -> ? I have not yet been able to discover the literal meaning of this word; I've found that it comes from the Greek word "Mymillon", but I have no idea what that means, except that it may come from the Greek word "Myrmiddon", which would kind of make sense given their equipment. Retiarius -> Latin = "man with a net" Secutor -> Latin = "chaser" Hoplomachus -> from Greek "Hoplomachos" = "fighter (battler) with a Hoplon (shield used by Hoplites)" Scissor -> Latin = "slicer" (certainly sounds deadly!) Provocator -> Latin = "challenger" Dimachaerus -> from Greek "Dimachairos" = "man with two swords" (by the way, "machaira" refers to a short sword) Thank you, Metatron! Just thought I'd fill in a few gaps.

    My understanding of gladiators is that the more armor they had, the shorter their weapon was. So one guy had full armor and big shield and a little itty bitty dagger and the guy with the long trident and net had almost no armor. Then there were some in between. I guess I was wrong about that.

    First of all, nice shirt! I used to have a book when I was a kid called "A Visitor's Guide to Ancient Rome" and it had an section on gladiators and the Colosseum. There was a part where they listed and described many of the common gladiator classes. This video made for a great trip down memory lane.

    I just read the Gladiators: The World's Most Deadliest Sport and learned all about these I love how well thought the classes were, the fact they balanced the Gladiators like the ones with holed helmets they couldn't see well, so the had to get close, but in their advantage was their body shield and gladius, it's also where I learned Contemptus Mortis. which mean't fearlessness in the face of death. This was a fantastic book and anyone looking to learn more on the gladiators must get this book it's by Fik Meijer.

Like when retiarius fought against secutor, secutor had less visibility so retiarius would usually keep the net close to the ground and behind him so secutor wouldnt know where the net comes from. And secutor had no edges on his helmet or shield so the net would be less likely to stick on him. Balance..

    Roma invicta I know this was over a year ago, but it actually doesn't hurt nearly as much. A small cut doesn't sever the nerve completely, therefore is still slightly intact to send pain through the body. That, along with adrenaline pumping, leaves the body very able to sustain far more punishment. Combining these two with training and you've got yourself someone who can shrug of pain almost entirely. Over 30 years of martial arts experience and I have been cut clean to the bone several times during training as well as competitions. It sounds far worse than it is. Cheers.

    The Provocatores are a variant of the Hastatus Legionary class of the manipular system. Hastati had a scutum, helmet a pectoral (small square/rectangular plate of bronze on the chest) and one greave on the left leg. Originally the Hastati are said to have used the Hasta lance as main weapon but switched to pilum & gladius in later times, but when exactly is not clear to me. One source says they changed weaponry and tactics after the Gallic invasion of 390BC(?) others figure it was after or during the Samnite wars. Do you know anything about that great Metatron?

    Great vid, would love to know more about the rarer classes. It reminds me I saw a documentary a while ago about this very subject and it mentioned a few additional things. It seems it is thought the reason most gladiators possesed good protection to the head, arms and legs but not the torso was that the public prefered to see quick and bloody deaths rather than drawn out maiming. Also in regards to the Retiarius it was also mentioned that most gladiators were not allowed to actively retreat from their opponent, only the Retirarius was allowed to use this tactic and thus make full usage of their lightly armoured nature and to 'bait' the opponent to keep with the fisherman theme.

    Given the fact they were divided in classes, were they allowed to grab equipment either dropped by or from a fallen opponent in the case multiple fighters were in stage at the same time? Or did they have to stick to their designed weaponry and armor? Great video once again, thank you!

    If it's during a battle yes, but you don't keep it if you won. So let's say during a fight a gladiator drops his sword, then the other gladiator could pick it up and kill the other with it, but would have to give it back if he won at the end of the battle.

    the "ludi gladiatori" were more similar to sport matches than real(istic) battles. There were many rules that the gladiators had to follow. We have no sources telling us if "steal" equipment was allowed or not, but we know that even the attack and defence pattern were established for each class; and we know that there were referees inside the arena. We also know the Kill the opponent was not the only thing that did matter, the way they did was important too. We can assume, I suppose, that pick up someone else weapon would have be seen as cheating and not allowed.

    Well not completly true.. Secutors had poor visibility due to the helmet being shaped wierdly and having that extra protection retiarius would keep his net close to the ground and behind him to make sure secutor wouldnt know where the net came from (some times putting the net on the ground and get secutor to step on it and pull the net right under him causing him to fall) But. BUT there is a completly stupid and idiotic "class" Andabata they would fight with helmets that had no eyeholes In them (blind fighting)

But, suppose you have limited funds. How would what kind of priorities would you make. What would you invest in first? What I am really wondering is if it, for example makes sence to only protect one arm with plate.

    In archeological studies, it has been found that at least 80% of the ancient remains of fighters in battlegrounds had some sort of damage to the skull. So I would go for a helmet first.

    Alright, thankyou. But, (just because there may be buts), while any one born in this century would buy a helmet, getting your genitalia scewered insted...would it really be preffered in ancient or medieval times? Still in defence of the chainmail bikini. Although I have wondered why in some movies the actors remove their helmets. I guess if they are officers yes and need full vision. But how is it in a duel? Helm off or on? Happy new year, btw! :)

    I'm quite certain that many of these classes evolved as direct result of different sponsors competing against each other. Lucius the Fish Merchant has sponsored a school training retiarii and secutori and Marcus the Horse Trader sponsors a school training diplomachii and bets big money on his gladiator being being better.

It's a cut and pull weapon. If you'd cut the way it's held in the picture, most of the upper part of the blade (which is where most of the force is focused) would not even come into contact with whoever you're trying to hit since the curve is so drastic at that point.

    Very good video. The Retiarius must be the class that died most.... The trident is a very bad weapon to kill people due this 3 pointy spikes. One single point is the best for penetration purposes (no pun intended). Also he has almost no protection comparing to the others.

  • @metatronyt

    @metatronyt

    9 жыл бұрын

    RyuFireheart Your point and logic are very sound, but still for some reasons the Retiarius was the one that would fight against two (secutor) so it must have been a pretty strong one, probably because of the net.

  • @xxfurio90

    @xxfurio90

    9 жыл бұрын

    RyuFireheart Actually Retiarius were the most feared classes and the one considered the strongest, the protection were used to reduce differences in power between the classes. The trident does his job if we look at the skeletons of gladiators.

  • @RyuFireheart

    @RyuFireheart

    9 жыл бұрын

    Metatron Maybe the Retiarius was a skilled fighter so he got the worst equipment to fight against 2 less experienced fighters as a way to balance things. It also seems like the Retiarius was meant to represent the civilian (fisherman) fighting agaist an invading army (well... 2 man with decent equipment). Maybe people liked this role playing stuff alot

  • @JimGiant

    @JimGiant

    RyuFireheart It's true that a trident wouldn't penetrate as far but it would still be deadly. I'd be more concerned with the extra weight having 3 points would add. It also looks like it would get stuck quite easily but given it has so much range and Retiarius has 2 more weapons this could be used to his advantage.

  • @edi9892

    @edi9892

    RyuFireheart The trident looks pretty effective to me and I wouldn't be surprised if it would go through padded leather or even mail, but I would definitly prefer a shield over a net. I have some problems imagining that it could be employed effectivly especially when it hits the outstreched arm, but due to the success of the class I guess it had to be (with alot of practice).
