Agreed. The Cyrodillic Empire had Cyrodiil, High Rock, Skyrim and Hammerfell at their peak. Also, Tamriel is a continent, not the entire world. There are Five or six current continents on Nirn.

+Hiperdude Lolz I am sorry, I forgot to clarify. I was talking about the new Empire, as the old one, the one from Tiber Septim, was the one that conquered all of Tamriel. This Empire practically disbanded (without leader) with the Molag Bal invasion and what not, (ESO) so the New Empire, with the few Septims that were left AND the Medes Dynasty, which is believed to have disappeared if the Dark Brotherhood Questline from SKYRIM is Cannon. I repeat, I forgot to clarify that.

Angry Shark910 Even if so, it is a known fact that Nords came to Tamriel from Atmora, as well as the invasion of Akavir. Even if people of Tamriel haven't yet explored the rest of the world, they know of existence of other continents as, damn, first HUMANS on Tamriel come from Atmora!

I liked the video, but you should have used an older version of the Cyrodilic empire for this comparison. Really the Cyrodilic empire at the time of Skyrim isn't comparable to the Roman empire anymore. This comparison should have been done between the Romans and the Cyrodilic empire at the time of Oblivion when it was at its height and technology was more comparable. By the time of Skyrim 200 years have passed since the Empire was at its height. At its peak the Empire held every single province of Tamriel whereas by Skyrim they only hold 3. The Imperial weapons and armor at the time of say Morrowind were also far more Roman in function with the swords looking even more like a gladius and the shields being actual tower shields.

bladerun101 In the real world many places conquered by Rome were afforded the same luxury. Their own leaders were allowed to remain in charge, and they were allowed to keep many of their own customs. Rome usually only asked that nations pledge part of their armies to them, and that if Rome ever needed aid that the conquered nation help. Well, that and of course they were required to give money, goods, etc to the Romans. However, Rome rarely put its own leaders in charge of conquered peoples, and they rarely tried to take away customs that these peoples had. This was because doing so became to muddied and dangerous, especially as they got further and further away from Rome proper. Of course much of this changed in the later years of Rome. Many of the later Emperors did begin pushing for more control. This is of course one of the reasons Rome began to collapse.

bladerun101 That's in the time of Skyrim. The Dunmer at the time of Morrowind actually agreed to join the Empire and were awarded special immunity to some Imperial laws such as the ban on slavery in exchange for joining. All the way up until Oblivion the Dunmer were relatively friendly toward the races of men (more or less) and were actually pro-Empire on the whole with the great house Hlaalu acting as the main support for the Empire there. Then after the Oblivion crisis the Empire abandoned Morrowind resulting in the province being nearly destroyed by the Daedra. In anger the other great houses abolished house Hlaalu and seceded from the Empire. Then the events that lead to the eruption of Red Mountain happened which led to Morrowind becoming completely destabilized and caused them to loose a good chunk of the province to the Argonians. The Argonians were however pushed back slightly by the united remaining Dunmer who mostly charged under the banner of house Redoran. This lead to the Redoran becoming the main ruling body in Morrowind, and Redoran is extremely anti-Empire due to the events that lead to Morrowind being in this state in the first place. So, in short at its peak the Empire was actually very friendly with Morrowind.

Looks like some commenters mix up some names... Tamriel is a continent. The planet is called Nirn.

  • @Criomorph
    @Criomorph8 жыл бұрын

Corrections, corrections, corrections, where to start with these numerous corrections. Okay...here we go: 1) The Septim Empire (While still based in Cyrodil, and still technically having that name, "The Cyrodilic Empire" is more commonly used to refer to the Raman, or Second Empire. There have been many "Cyrodilic Empires" throughout the ages, rising and falling ,with each successive empire building upon the legacy of the last) at it's height, controlled the *entirety of Tamriel* However, this only lasted a number of years, and with the centuries, the various provinces broke off. Right now, during the events of Skyrim, has control only over little over half of Skyrim, High Rock and Cyrodil itself. 2) Tamriel is *NOT* the whole of their world. There are several more continents on Nirn, including Atmora, Akavir(where the Blades find their origin), Yokuda(ancestral home to the red guard, sank in to the ocean), Pyandonea, Aldmeris(possibly mythical) and probably another that I'm missing. However, in comparison to Tamriel and Akavir, Akavir being the larger of the two, they rest are rather quite tiny - more akin to large islands than actual continents. To compare it to the real world, it would be as if the Roman Empire had control over all of Europe.bits of Africa and bits of Asia(Tamriel is bigger than Europe). Though, as far as controlling different cultures....the peoples under the empire are far more culturally and racially(some even belonging to entirely different species and, in fact, classes) different than those under Rome. After all, there are only so many differences that a man and a man can have, and the Empire is host to far more than men and men alone. 3) A general is a general, he commands over as large an army as he can get. Saying that an Imperial general controls a "small army or entire legion" is like saying Caesar only had command over a single battalion. 4) This is less a correction, and more a musing. I wonder if the first rank you can earn is "Auxiliary" because...well...that's kind of what you are. Also, dude, why are you reading straight from the Wiki? I always hate it when KZreadrs do that. At the very least, state that you are going to do it before you do it. 5) Never mix game mechanics and lore, they do not represent each other. What you see, is not necessarily the reality of that world. In video games, there is always a massive disconnect between what the player can do, and what the lore says. This is because of the limits of the systems, and because Bethesda make mechanically simple games that are heavy on the lore, heavy on the character and heavy on the mods. In short, we don't really know how the Imperial sword was meant to be used since the simplistic fighting system doesn't really do much in the ways of martial arts and, as far as construction goes, the Imperial Sword is a fucking paddle - I'm pretty sure that you could effectively row a boat with that thing! As far as the shape goes(assuming that we bring it back in to realistic proportions), it's really just a fancy gladius. However, seeing the lack of scutum-like shields in the game, I'm going to say that the Imperial Sword was probably used as both a cutting and thrusting weapon. While we don't really know it's material quality, I think that it's safe to assume that it was made out of high-carbon steel. The Elder Scrolls exists in a weird "time beyond time" situation where, the world does, in actuality, exist in something comparable to the high-middle toward late middle ages...but the individual factions exist in the time periods that they're supposed to represent(Cyrodil representing Rome and the Italian States, High Rock representing Medieval western Europe, Skyrim representing Scandinavia during that weird period at the end of the Viking age where they were kind of vikings, but also kind of not vikings, and Hamerfell representing the Moors during their hay day). Another weird thing is that....in Skyrim, the Nords are land-loving infantrymen. They like to fight with their feet firmly planted in the soil, which is a sharp contrast to Viking naval culture. 6) Again, more of a musing than a correction but...Skyrim seems to be waging some sort of crusade against sleeves. Which is very weird because all of the previous games had them in great amounts - and they were all set in much warmer regions than Skyrim(the only place on or around Tamriel, colder than Skyrim is Atmora...which is basically Greenland/The Arctic). 7) "We can't see both in the game" *cough* Yes we can. was about to go on a rant about mods, good thing you mentioned them. 8) Depends on what you mean by "prefer". Which would I rather live under? Septim - life's simply more interesting with Dragons and demonic incursions! Which do I find more impressive? Roman. With all due respect for Tiber Septim and his line, but it's one thing to conquer your world with magic shouts and giant mecha(that actually happened in the lore), it's another to conquer your world with only your wit and your will(and a few million legionaries behind your back).

I hate how Skyrim jacked up the Legion's actual ranks to come up with some bs/half-assed ranks to try and make them sound Roman. The original(from Morrowind) ranks were: *Enlisted:* Recruit Spearman Trooper Agent Champion *Officer:* Knight Errant Knight Bachelor Knight Protector Knight of the Garland Knight of the Imperial Dragon Commanders of installations must be a Knight and were only called "Captain" or "General" in camps or fortresses, respectively. Both Captain and General were titles based on position not official ranks. Knight of the Imperial Dragon is the rank given to the leading Legion commander in a province, so "General" Tullius's actual rank should be Knight of the Imperial Dragon and "Legate" Rikke would be a Knight (most likely Knight of the Garland) serving as the General of the Castle Dour garrison. The original Imperial Legion had some Roman elements, but largely was its own entity which fit better in this amazing fantasy world. I hate how Bethesda has stooped so low as to just rip off (rather poorly if I might add) the Romans and call it the "Imperial Legion" now-a-days.

they HAD to change the ranks because of events which transpired in oblivion. for example the knight of the imperial dragon is not called that for an arbitrary reason, he is called that because he answers to the emperor who was, at the time of morrowind, dragonborn, since the line of dragonborn emperors died during the oblivion crisis, the current line of emperors are not dragons, thus calling their generals "of the imperial dragon" wouldn't make any sense.

For fuck's sake, the primary material that people have been making shields out of for the entirety of human civilization has been wood. Why? Because it's perfect for the job! it's light(ish), it's durable, it's easy to maintain AND if an enemy's blade actually hits it, it can get stuck in - which would prevent the enemy from using their weapon. Furthermore, the larger surface area of the Scutum makes it a considerably more protective shield - especially against arrows, javelins, slings and other ranged weapons. The Imperial shield is too small to be effectively used to protect you from ranged attacks(so it was obviously not designed around that). Furthermore, "whack your enemies with the sharp end of the shield"..."sharp end"? Have you seen how thick that thing is? Sharp has nothing to do with it! Plus, its' a shield, so it wouldn't be sharp anyway - even if it was properly proportioned. An all metal shield is not so good for singular use and in formation fighting. For one, it's considerably heavier; it also primarily depends upon deflection to protect from enemy blows(see bucklers), but in a formation, that's not really what you want to do(because what's to stop it hitting one of your friends?), a wooden shield is equally capable of deflecting enemy blows while still being light AND can be used to disable an opponents weapon(intercept it with the edge of your shield, and it will get stuck in). Heck, this is why people purposefully avoided putting metal brims on their shields for most of history - so that they can use it against an enemy's weapon. With that...there's really no difference between hitting someone with a thin metal bit and a thin wood bit - assuming that they weigh the same. The material in question won't make it bash better for some reason. All a metal brim does is make your shield a bit sturdier, less likely to splinter(though, covering it in cloth will do just the same).

TheImperialSyndicate Yes I have, and you can do the very same thing with a Scutum. "Go straight through"...well...not unless you made your shield wafer thin and out of toilet paper. That is, pretty much, the only situation in which a sword can cut straight through shield. Nobody's going to ever make a shield that's thin enough to be cut through - not unless they're short on cash and are doing it for cosplay purposes. No, but neither is a steel one...which is just going to heat up and scald the wearer...assuming that the fireball doesn't just knock him on his arse...I fail to see your point. Plus, a steel shield is vulnerable to lightning bolts and frost(because it's conductive and metal gets cold very fast - and stays cold unless it's heated up. Wood? Not so much). Plus, mages are not something legionaries would be facing on a daily basis, in fact, mages are relatively rare in TES lore(because...you know....you can't just become a mage overnight. That takes plenty of learning and years of dedication). Also: List of wooden shields: Basically all shields ever with a few exceptions(like bucklers) The hafts of almost all polearms, maces, war hammers and axes. War clubs. Various Maori weapons(a lot of which are sharp) The Aztec Macuahuitl(sharper than any steel blade, but very brittle blade/s) Laminar armor(sometimes made with leather reinforced by wood) The Native Americans also used wooden armor(when they wore armor at all). Quarterstafs Nunchaku I think you've had enough shame for one day, smart arse!

TheImperialSyndicate The Crimson Fucker Agreeing with Crimson here, wood is plenty fine to deflect blows. Even shields in the game skyrim are made of wood primarily with steel outlines. The iron, steel, and imperial shields (which could be considered the "most realistic") have a wooden body with metal frames and bosses.

I see you know a lot about Roman Empire, but not about the Tamrielic Empire. Let me explain. Cyrodiilic and Tamrielic Empires ate not the same. You talk about Tamrielic Empire and call it Cyrodiilic Empire. Cyrodiilic Empire fell before this one. Cyrodiilic Empire of Reman Cyrodiil ruled over Cyrodiil(province) and Tamrielic Empire rules over most of Tamriel(continent). The flag is similar to the Roman one, but it means something completely different. It's red and the dragon in shape of a diamond refer to the red diamond, the biggest and most important expensive rock in the amulet of kings, which is worn by the emperor with dragon fires lit to keep the barrier between Mundus and Oblivion functional. The dragon refers to the dragon fires, dragon blood of the emperor and the blades from Akavir(the dragon land). Besides that, I liked your video, although I don't see a point in comparing two different universes. Thank you for reading!

The Elder scrolls planet (Nirn) has annother sizable continent (Akavir) besides Tamriel where the games take place. There are also a few other smaller continents/islands such as Atmora and Aldmeris. As such the terrirory controlled by the Imperials may be a bit more simmilar to Imperial Rome (though like Rome, the territory of the Imperials varies a great deal over time).

13:12 - As a matter of fact, in some cases, roman legionnaires did have both arm protections in the form of manica (on the sword arm) and leg protection in the form of ocreae (greaves). It's just that they were rare and in very specific areas and dates, and thus the archaeological evidence is rather scarce. Usually atypical equipment was used in situations in which they needed to adapt their military technique to new enemy equipment (i.e. weapons like the Dacian falx). Legions (or at least part of them) had both manicas and greaves at some point during the Dacian wars of the 2nd century AD. They also added transverse iron straps to their helmets. This was done in the field, as the discovered models looked rather crude and placed over the classic helmet components, and not purposefully placed there when the helmet was made.

The Imperial Sword in Skyrim has a design resembling a ricasso. Though it doesn't resemble how an actual ricasso would have functioned (allowing the index finger to grip above the quillon for greater torque), I can see how it would have been useful. It looks to be more for deflecting than parrying, as it has that curve that accentuates at the quillon. It would probably have been useful for possibly even disarming if the positioning was right.

If you analyzed the Roman empire at its height, it would only be fair to analyze Cyrodil's empire at its height, which came to dominate all of Tamriel. In any case, I understand that you did an analysis exclusively of the empire in Skyrim and I congratulate you for your work. I hope that in the future you will make one in comparison to other Elder Scrolls games.

I'd like to dispute one of your statements upon amount of land controlled, because if we consider that there are multiple land masses on nirn and tamriel is only one of them, we realize their reach is smaller than previously thought.

MC Gibbs ahah nice question xD The Metatron is an angel from the Judeo/christian faith. It's my favourite angel so I named my channel after him, also because he is op (according to the lore he has 72 wings ;) ) Metatron is basically God's secretary. I will make a video about him eventually also explaining more in detail why I named my channel after him and all but when my channel will be bigger :)

Hey Metatron, probably you already know by this time, but on the ES lore, the "Cyrodilic" Empire, was actually the Tamriellic Empire. On the beggining of the third era, Tiber Septim, or Talos (as you may have heard a lot about on the game) conquered all of the continent, in many ways like the Romans. Both by the sword and the diplomacy, in some cases certain countries had some sort of independance. And this empire on Skyrim, is a decadent one, where due to the previous game most of the Empire were fragmentated and the countries got their independance, only High Rock and Skyrim are subjects to the Empire at this time. The irony, is that the previous game, Oblivion, which is based on Cyrodill, has it's legion very different fom a Roman one. And the land os mostly medieval based.

It looks like the Cyrodilic looks like it was slightly involving into a medieval-style armor. BTW, were the Imperials wearing pants? Cause I know that during the Roman era, pants were highly synonymous with barbarians like the Celtics, Visigoths, Vandals, and the Ambronies(sp?).

Hard to say which one is better because as many people say the Empire in Skyrim is not at its highest, but still the Cyrodillic empire at that time had armour the is more of a mixture of Roman and Medieval armour and weapons as their main shield is either a round shield or a triangle one. Also more plated armour that cover most of the body and not just the main mass. Mostly fantasy combination yet still a great one indeed.

I thought the fuller was to strengthen the blade along its length? I know it's mistaken sometimes as a "blood-groove" but the fact you bring up weight savings makes sense... due to battles being lengthy in time, weight savings would yield higher stamina over time. Now I will look at Fuller's as weight and strength attributes.

Hey Metatron I just wanted to tell you that Tamriel (the map you showed us) is not the entire world of the elder scrolls, it's just one continent. there are other continents such as Atmora, Akavir, Pyandonea and possibly a couple others like Aldmeris or Thras. Not to mention the sunken continent: Yokuda. Also I thought the Empire covered more than just Skyrim and Cyrodiil, doesn't it also cover high rock and Morrowind? I know that it has covered the entirety of Tamriel previously but the Aldmeri dominion and Hammerfall leaving changed that.

Plattfisken After the Red Mountain erupted in 4E 5 the Empire of Tamriel Empire withdrew its Legions, meaning they no longer claimed it. Altmer formed the Aldmeri Dominion with the Bosmer and the Thalmor ran the show. The moon's disappeared for two years, endangering the Khajiit, as their birth requires the moons. When they came back, the Thalmor claimed responsibility for their reappearance, and the two states of Elswyr joined the Aldmeri Dominion. Argonians were like FTS I'm out. Great war happens in 4E 171-175 had the White-Gold Concordat signed, giving parts of Hammerfell to the Dominion. Titus Mede II told his Redguard legionaries to return home, and that they were not citizens of the Empire, and they joined the fighting at home, pushing the Elves out. That just leaves Highrock, Skyrim, and Cyrodiil as part of the Cyrodiilic Empire.

As far as the Cyrodiilic heavy armor and lorica segmentata comparison is concerned, I think I'd rather wear the lorica segmentata as the Cyrodiilic armor looks like it's made of pretty thick pieces of steel and probably far heavier than I'd care to wear for long periods of time.

Percentage of relative map control? I mean, "known world" that you showed wasn't even 50% of the civilized world at that point. So, considering that, won't the area percentages also be similar?

I downloaded a couple of mods that changes the idle and combat animations. The animations look more realistic, and the mod adds thrusting to combat. Another, totally different topic. The empire in the elder scrolls series. Controlled all of Tameriel at its peak. What we see in Skyrim is basically the beginning of the end of the empire. Even in a fantasy world, empires are destined to fall.

In future, if you need to circle an area of a map you can use the pen tool from illustrator if you have it. There is a trial version but it only lasts 7 days. Gimp is a free program that might have a similar tool. Alternatively you can probably download a circle 'object' with transparency that you could overlay on a map. Gimp should have the tools needed to adjust and overlay this image on a map. I have to say it always bugged me how the camps were done so anyone could freely walk in. If there isn't one, we need a mod that makes the camps fortified.
