Everyone talks about the brilliant lyrics, Maynard's vocal skill, Danny's absolute dominance, etc. But you're touching on yet another level of TOOL, and that is the incredible production and engineering that goes into their albums. Their music SOUNDS incredible!!! So far, you're the only Reactor I've heard talk about that aspect of ANY band's offering, and I am here for it!!! 👍🏼😁 So you know, I've been with you since your Reaction to, Beth Hart - Am I the One. 🤘🏼🔥🤘🏼🔥

You nailed it. And Maynards vocals as an instrument. Then you add the lyrics. You could have a channel on each of these aspects and still not fully grasp the experience of each song. Perfect.

There is still some contention that Paul helped write a few of the songs from Ænima and even recorded them on earlier demos. On your second statement, you’re 100% correct. I believe Justin was one of the main reasons their sound moved away from the anger and into the mystical.

This is one of my favorites also. This song has on display just about everything we appreciate about what they can do. The beautifully layered build ups, the amazing sound effects used just the right way. Perfectly placed changes that never seem overdone or out of place. Multiple amazing riffs in one tune, and of course top notch playing and singing from each member. All the instrumentals serve the song and mesh seamlessly. And of course the intriguing and brilliantly written lyrics by Maynard. Incredible band.

Incredible disgrosstingly good reaction...I think you used the perfect word to sum up this song, and in essence this particular album = thunderous. I mentioned on a previous comment that the sound of Aenima is sonicallybig & powerful and it just floors you. SUGGESTION: as you go in album order perhaps you revisit the songs you've reached to but do the lyrical dissection. Never waste a second or third or fourth opportunity to react to any of these songs!

Tool is what introduced me to a masterful panning of sounds too. The way their songs just dance around your headphones when you listen to them is like no other when they do exactly what you said, pan like 25%-50% to left or right. It creates such a rich soundscape that some artist really miss out on by not taking advantage of things like that. Great insight once again!

Learning more and more about mixing and mastering, it makes me wonder how many musicians have written absolutely amazing music, but have no knowledge of how to properly master and mix the music they’ve written, which causes it to sound flat and dull, when it could be so much more full and have so much more depth.

You're the first "reacter" I've subscribed to. I think it's bc you "talk shop" with sound mixing. It's all Greek to me, so you could be blowing smoke and I'd have no idea...but it's a step above other reacters so I feel like you're producing a solid product as opposed to another "man that's fire" video. I like reaction videos but they're kind of a guilty pleasure in that you're tuning in for the high likelihood of a stranger agreeing with something you already think is dope...so you run the risk of creating your own echo chamber of bobbing heads like "yeah, the shit you like IS dope". BUT TOOL IS DOPE. And you are an intelligent reviewer. Keep up the good work.

You mentioned sampling and it reminded of another artist that burst onto the scene in the same era, but a totally different genre (Trip-Hop). I cannot recommend DJ Shadow's debut album "Endtroducing" enough (side note: it came out the same month as Aenima). At the time I was very deep into heavy metal and grunge (and Tool) but then I stumbled upon the single from DJ Shadow "Midnight In A Perfect World" on late night radio and I ran down the trip-hop rabbit hole as fast as I could. But I digress. DJ Shadow's debut album was the first album to be constructed of 98% samples; cut from hundreds (if not thousands) of obscure vinyl tracks. It's a work of art which you may appreciate. Just thought I'd through that out there.

I think its the other way around Tool took what the grunge bands were doing, and also what peeps like Meshuggah (the poly rhythms and grinding low riffs, as Meshuggah are very heavy, not accessible as Tool) and early prog stuff like Floyd, King Crimson and some Zepplin, They rose to fame in a big way after grunge, , they represent a synthesis and a kind of distilled perfection of the guitar music in that period in my eyes.

There’s speculation that this song is about L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of scientology. Maynard has a strong documented disdain for the church of scientology. He once baa’d like a sheep for an hour at a concert after finding the venue was owned by the church. But as with most tool songs, the lyrical interpretation is left to the listener.

This is especially because I happen to be totally deaf in one ear, so I can't hear in stereo, so some of these engineering effects are unfortunately lost on me, because I have to mash everything into mono so that I don't miss any of the content. I was wondering if you know of any tips, equipment, settings, or whatever, that can increase a monaural person's ability to enjoy the finer details of quality production, I'd be all ear to hear it.

The intensity in Maynard’s vocals through Lateralus is something I sometimes miss. But, I watched an interview with him(forget when and where), and he spoke about the anger/rage from his younger days and what music did for his therapy, his release, his growth. And he’s not angry like that anymore, his art did it’s job. When people stay with a band or artist simply because they stay the same for decades, I question it now and ask if the group or singer is really an artist, or merely a performer.

I’m pretty sure this was the last album Adam used his Marshall primarily on guitar recordings. He starting using diezel amps on the next album, his tone became more consistent and developed. He uses a bunch of amps when recording when needed, but his made that move after this album. He also got a pedal called the chopper (?) that has a full foot pedal to pan the guitar, chop it up. equipboard.com/pros/adam-jones

Danny owes a lot to Bill Bruford. Listen to Discipline (1981) by King Crimson. Adam owes a lot to Buzz Osborne (King Buzzo), who was also the main influence on Kurt Cobain. Listen to Ozma (1989) from Melvins.

It's hard for me to choose between Eulogy and Pushit for favorite Tool song. Of course Opiate is in the mix as well, but that's a different mood.

One does not "listen" to Tool. One "absorbs" Tool.
