I love this live show of them from the Ænima tour but you definitely should’ve done the studio version and can almost guarantee you would’ve liked it more

Yup. This version is just not great especially with the audio quality.

@@jindas4217 it’s still enjoyable but doesn’t reflect the greatness of the studio recording I can guarantee in person it was incredible tho

I missed my opportunity to see them in Christchurch New Zealand, in 97. Had I saved some money that year, I'd have seen em

Honestly this is the best version he could've reacted to. It was the 1st show of the tour, this is a very special bootleg IMO the studio version doesn't match the vibe this show gave.
I think expecting Maynard to be up front and playing to the crowd while on stage is like asking you to 'just enjoy' the music without the counting. It's kind of his schtick. ;)
If I was to introduce someone to TOOL, it wold be this song. It has everything

Depending on religious preference lol
Honestly, the studio version is waaaaay better
It always cracks me up when Danny keeps playing at the end abs Adam is like wtf stop playing Danny
This still is my top 5 Tool song to listen to. Thanks for the live reaction
“Turn around Maynard”, “Danny looks bored”… Tell me you don’t know Tool without telling me you don’t know Tool. 😂
This looks like a show from the Glass House around '96. Studio version is great as well.

It is, first concert of the Aenima album!
Yea this was the album after Undertow called Aenima. I've been a Tool fan since the Sober video came out on MTV and personally I think Aenima and Lateralus are their absolute best albums. By no means do any of their albums suck because they don't. But definitely those two albums are their best.

that was the tour maynard had a joke before Aenima (song) started. what is this? *loudly exhales 2x* a pair of pants. *finishes intro start*
THIS! This is the performance i show anyone who wants to see Tool live! Absolutely incredible!
I had to write a eulogy for my grandmother Kathy today. I got alot of inspiration from this band. And they gave me a standing ovation
Oh, shit. Bringing back the tool. Fuck yeah
Finally, one of my top 3 Tool songs! Crawl away, Eulogy, and Right in Two. Those are my 3.
Missed opportunity to watch the live performance of this song where Maynard is roleplaying a pastor. Probably my favorite performance by them

If you watch the Glass House Concert in full Maynard says this is their first concert of the Aenima tour, it released a few months prior to this show. That’s how good they are!
I love this song. It's in my top 5 tool songs also.
Another fantastic review and analysis! I think a lot of this song gets lost in the video quality. Thank you for doing these reactions, they really add a tremendous amount of insight!
Most under appreciated TOOL song imo
You're right it's from Ænima the album after Undertow. The album they did start playing with polyrhythms and time signatures. Their most used time signature in the beginning was 6/4. It will always be my favorite album bc the evolution began.
Great
11:00 - Good guess. This is the second track (and third single) of their 1996 album "Ænima".
12:45 - Imagine beeing at the concert and Maynard is intensively staring at you singin "Would you die for me". :D
11:50 you are very much correct
tanks David!✊ 🤘
Nice TAKE David. ✌️
I seen tool once. Don’t remember what tour. He stayed in the corner in the dark pretty much the whole show. Very odd. But the light and stage show was amazing.
Eulogy is a great song from Aenima, I found it hard to watch simply because of the picture quality and shakiness, but having seen Tool live I know they are not a visually expresive band, they let the musicianship and lightshow do the talking, Maynard does not often come forwards into the light, so this show must have been very uncomfortable for him, normally he lurks in shadows and towards the back of the stage. I think your review was pretty fair as I agree Danny is not normal, I wonder if he dreams in polyrhythms (scary thought)

Between 91 and early 200s he had no problem stomping around up front but he did eventually recede to the back
Strongly suggest the Holy Trinity, Disposition, Reflection, Triad (D/R/T)..you could do the live recording..quite possibly the Tooliest of Tool songs
LESSS GOOO
Read this song was written with L Ron Hubbard in mind. Lyrics match up. Studio version is much better.

I was under the impression it was a Eulogy for Bill Hicks. I think he would have saw the humour in it.
Maybe my favorite song ever. Not just Tool, overall!! Incredible.
After Undertow Danny spent some time in India which is where he really learned about/expanded his love for polyrhythms. Maynard is using a megaphone for parts of this song as the song is partly about the people on the street preaching about god but mainly it’s a dig at religious organisations especially L Ron Hubbard and Scientology (in a different song of this album Maynard sings “fuck L Ron Hubbard and fuck all his clones” AEnema from AEnima album which is the one after undertow.
Is it ironic that a song called Eulogy actually was my beginning into a life of being a Tool fan? 🤔
notice the part in 12:40 Maynard says (would you die for me) with a innocent look in his face knowing his religious upbringing really damaged him psychologically.
Good live performance even though the audio/video quality wasn't great. You still get a feel that it probably sounded great live there. A few things. This was an early live performance for their album Aenima, the follow-up to Undertow, as you correctly suspected David. As such, they were likely concentrating on getting the music performance right and working out any kinks, more so than on theatrics. And second, Tool in general concentrate on getting their relatively complex material right technically. They are more like a symphony orchestra, where each member has a part to play and they focus on getting that part perfect. It's likely more about getting the technical and emotional aspects right. It can be a bit masochistic, but having fun on stage or being overly theatrical (though Maynard does bring some drama), wouldn't really fit with Tool's music or themes. They're never going to look like the likes of Kiss or Rammstein. The thing that I can imagine working well for them would be utilizing more screens, films, and various visuals like NIN or doing something conceptual like Pink Floyd for The Wall. Edit: Plus, to my knowledge, you have 3 introverts on stage, with the fourth, Danny, being the only extrovert.
I don't see the wire going to the guitar going to the amp so this is clearly not live.
Hey man, I don't have patreon or anything but I have a suggestion. Could you give Chris Cornell's live performance of When I'm Down at Troubadour a listen? I think you'd appreciate the vocal performance, if you have the time to get to it. Keep up the good objective work man.
I agree with your review, not their best but still good.
Can you please do a reaction video for the song Fluff, by Black Sabbath 🙏🏼
Surely there's a version of this out there not filmed/recorded on a potato. I did listen to Ænima back in the day but not a huge fan otherwise.
David, react to Bullet for my Valentine - Tears don't fall and Walking the Demon, please 🙏
Not sure why this live version of the song was chosen. The audio and video isn’t great, the performance isn’t anything special and the camera work is bad. I hope Dave gives the studio version a listen to get a better feel for this song.

Yep, there's very few good quality vids of Tool live. Studio versions are better pretty much every time.
Great tune, to bad you listened to a bootleg, the audio is like something I recorded with a crappy tape deck in the early ‘80s.
I’d rather you react to a better recording of the song but since you’re a musician I’m sure you can hear the song well despite the not the best recording
Bad choice David. Very bad audio, great song! Next time...

I didn't choose anything. The requester provided the link to this specific video.
Songs don't have to be complex to be superb. I personnally can't stand their post- Aenima era. Eulogy being one of my favorite song on Aenima, along with Aenema, well it is a lock for the top 5. I get that you want to reward the complexities of songs, but sometimes it doesn't resonate well with the greatness of the song. I don't know. Well, I know I'm the minority, but I've never dug their stuff after this album. Funny, because I introduced a friend of mine, back in our school days to, to Tool : he couldn't like them because of the repetiveness of the riffs (it was at the Aenima era). Then, I came to dislike their turning point, and he became to love it more and more. Today, he still goes to Tool concert, not me :P
All I could think about in 2020 when Donald Trump lost the election was this song. 😅
