I read an interview with Justin Chancellor (bass player) talking about songwriting in Tool. He said that Adam and himself work separately and each come up with their own riffs. A lot of the time, Adam will here Justin's bass riffs and say "hey, let's swap riffs, you play this guitar riff I've come up with on bass and I'll play that bass riff on guitar that you've come up with". Justin said in the interview that it can a bit of a bruise to his own ego when Adam says this because he feels the bass riffs his and he's worked a long time on it, but usually relents in the end because he trusts Adam and more often than not, swapping riffs around fits in the context of the song they are working on. I found that a really interesting way of approaching the song writing aspect of the songs

I don't think there are many bands that can be as open and trusting as these guys are with each other. They have set their ego's aside for the music and have created a sound that is unique to them. Most bands, especially lead singers, care more about their ego and making money than they do making truly amazing music.

Hi David, There’s only 4 reactions left on this album, the patient, parabol and parabola (should be done as 1 song but do parabola if you think both would be too long), ticks & leeches, then disposition/reflection/triad it’s one song in 3 parts often referred to as the holy trinity, please try to do it as one (21 minutes) reaction. Parabol is a soft gentle buildup to parabola so you only miss a bit of the feel of the song but disposition/reflection/triad are 3 distinct movements and you would miss out on the overall experience doing these individually. Plus I’m pretty sure Pneuma is written in 33/8 with multiple ways of making the 33/8 being used.

Great reaction dude! What makes it sound more comlex is the fact that drum, bass and guitar are often in different time signitures. That makes every piece sound and feel more complex as when you look at it isolated. Greets from Germany!

What an epic meltdown on their time signatures. Seriously, I love seeing it. Dave, this is kind of a dig, but meant in a good way. The fact that you and so many others are so perplexed by their time signatures shows how much deeper they are than the majority of people as well as most in the industry. TOOL is not for everyone, but I think that is because most people want simple easy stuff and don't have the depth to experience it. Please keep it coming.

great reaction. One of my favorite Tool songs. Appreciate the insight as always. You saying "its not difficult, but I would never have come up with that in a million years" is a strong contrast to smug musicians saying "its easy to play, its not that complex of a song" Its like they forget the difference between writing a good song and just knowing how to play it. Man never feel bad about taking up time figuring it out on your instruments, it was really cool to watch. I picked up a bass not too long ago and it’s been so much fun trying to learn so I was in awe watching you figure it out so fast. As much as I want to watch you react to all the songs on the album in their proper groupings, I think I’d rather you listen to the whole album yourself on your own time when you’re in the right mood for it and play it all the way through without stopping at all. Then do a synopsis video afterwards once you gather all your remarks and tell us what you thought. I’m not really fond of the broken up choppy album listens and I don’t think anyone wants to watch a full album reaction in real time, so just an idea. Because this album definitely needs a front to back undivided attention listen to really appreciate why so many people say it’s their peak.

What the heck? Don't apologize, it was cool as heck seeing you just figure out those riffs off of pure knowledge of the bass alone, that was super enjoyable to watch.

As for writing process.. so there's a vid somewhere ( i think joe rogan) where Maynard says he writs the melodies and the others write there parts to the melodies and they work from there edit: they also do a lot of work separately as far as I understood. and Maynard will just sit in his car in a vacant parking lot and write these melodies... also gotta sub love these vids

21:09 - I could see Adam and Danny having their own Pythagorean school where they're drawing geometric figures in the sand with a stick and trying to figure out whether the Neoplatonist source of all that is is more present in a 21/8 or an 27/8. They probably do it to mess with themselves though and since they're veteran musicians it hits anyone else that much harder.

Excellent break down, Tool takes a long time to release music, I think they start with no time signatures in mind at all , one of them just starts playing till they get the vibe or groove they really like and presenting it to the others then they all add in elements that fit that groove. And then they polish and find the signatures that logically completes the song. Its why it takes so long.. I dunno just a pure layman guess. Nonetheless they are amazing, one of the best bands ever imo... Always fun watching you react to tool. But if I were you, as much of a backlog you have.. and want to listen to that album do it ! 🤘✌

The amount of times I've seen pub bands try and do this intro and failed is crazy, yet it's simplicity is crazy. They just (as you say) make it sound far more complicated than it actually is.

I liked Tool enough from hearing Sober and the various singles from Aenima on rock radio in the mid-to-late 90s But this song (the lead single off this album) is what sold me on loving this band. That breakdown at the end is astounding.

Beautiful, David. When I see you reacting to Tool, I can't wait to see it. Lateralus is not only a great album but probably one of the greatest mind-fucks in history. Should react to "Tick & Leeches" off this same album. Also should go back to Fear Inoculum and react to "Descending" and check out Adam Jones' "The Witness". It's an instrumental he released last year to go with an animated short Gibson released to promote Adam's signature 1979 Les Paul series. Technically it's a Tool instrumental because Justin and Danny perform the bass and drums on it. A great piece. Another to react to is Tool's cover of Zeppelin's "No Quarter". Keep it going David, always love it. Stay fabulous yourself. Best wishes to Mrs. H

They tend to write the riffs first just messing around...not doing what most bands usually do, which is as you know try to fit everything to 4/4, but instead let the timing of the root riff ideas be random...Danny comes up with something angular to the riff and sorta frames the groupings and wala! therein lies the secret magic formula!
