@@GothPrime us idiot music savants listen to tool to hear weird time signatures lol 4/4 and some 3/4 by Adam doesn't cut it. It's a track made for the radio I get it. The vocals alone pushed forward support that. Maynard made a radio friendly song. No problem with that.

It's a banger they say lol the song is good it's just not classic tool. I have to listen to a tool song 3 times just to count the time signatures. Then I enjoy the song. The pot....I was like damn a song in 4/4? I enjoyed it the first time without using my brain lol

I read somewhere that when Maynard was asked what song he'd recommend to someone that's never heard Tool before he said to start with The Pot to get a sense of what they do. It's definitely the most accessible, but it's still one of their best. I think you need to slow roll before you tackle something like Rosetta Stoned. lol

If I ever hear that someone hasn't listened to Tool before this is the song I suggest to them as an intro because of its easy time signature and the groove/funk of the song. Not to say it's an easy song but for someone who is brand new they need something to head bob to 😆

I count pretty much the whole song as 3/4 and 5/4, or 6/8 and 10/8. Either way it's basically still 4/4 like you said, but I think the 3/4 to 5/4 is an ingenious way to play a 4/4 feel. Something I would never think of in a million years

This song really shows what you can do with 4/4. The triplets in the vocal intro threw me off quite a few times when this album came out, at first it seemed like the bass was in a completely different time-signature than the vocals. Great stuff.

Yeah, in this case the song has a rather pointed message to get across, so it makes sense that it would be a little more musically straight-forward. That said, there is still a ton of magic to find in this one. The grove, the transitions, the phrasing Maynard employs, the style that Maynard employs, etc. It's a fantastic song, and one of my favorites, but clearly it's not going to rate like Lateralus which has a killer message, and is bending the laws of physics.

As far as Justin's super yummy bass tone, the bass he uses is key. He uses a Wal Bass, which is very expensive and he is a pick player which give a little bit more of a punchy attach than the fingers. To my knowledge the only song he uses his fingers is 10,000 Days, but he uses a pick on that one in a couple of places as well. But other than that I think he actually boosts the mids. I can get pretty close I think with my Schecter bass by doing that, I am not in any sort of band, I tried starting one with my brother and a few people at the church I was going to at the time and I have not played in several years but I used to play for fun. He runs the signal through a splitter and has 3 signals running, one of them always clean and one running with grit. I believe even when he has his bass whammy and other pedals active there is still a clean signal running of un-effective Wal Bass tone yumminess. His pedal board is something to behold as well, Dunlop TV does a rundown of his kit, but I think it is off one of the Lateralus tours so it may not what he is using now but it will get you close.

As a guitarist I call it box shapes. It’s a classic 5th position of a blues shape on the minor. Usually. I do like the 3/ on the 4. It’s not genius but sounds great no matter what. Even basic 4/4 songs can be amazing just depends on approach

For Justin's tone you're probably close enough with your SansAmp. To get to the exact tone from there you probably need to play with a pick like Justin does if you don't already. Justin is almost 100 percent a pick player which adds a bit of punch. I play bass and I don't usually use a pick because I don't really like the pick attack sound and I hate trying to eq it out when mixing. But it's probably needed to get that Justin punch for sure. I'm not one of those players that poop all over pick players. It's just not for me. If Geddy Lee can get by on a 4 string bass with just his fingers then that's good enough for me.

I think the timing is why so many people that haven't heard Tool before like this song. It's more "familiar" for head bobing etc. It's a great bass line. I'd rather you be honest with a reaction no matter what your opinion is rather than the fake reactions I see out there.

I am sorry, but I have to disagree on some things in your analysis. It’s D, not D# (like every other tool song that I have heard so far- I am just beginning my journey). At 11:10 it switches from 4/4 into 3/4, now aligning with the 6/8 feel that has been in the vocals from the very beginning. As a result though, it does not require the extra 4/8 that came in after two 6/8 earlier in the tsong, in order to fall together with the beginning of every second 4/4, as the 6/8 always align with the 3/4 in every measure.
