Your reactions are always so good, and now you have made my day by rating one of my favorite Tool songs. Can't get much better than that. I have lived in Seattle for the last 40 years, yes I'm old, Moving on. I have seen some amazing music come out of this city though out the years, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden two of my favorites, RIP Chris & Layne. There is another band however that seems to have been forgotten, although I don't know why. They are called Candlebox, the lead singer is Kevin Martin he has an amazing voice. I would love it if you could give me your opinion on what I consider one of their best songs (YOU) please it is important that you do the lyric video because the others have been cut to the point of losing the message they are trying to convey, and the message is so necessary.........

I've seen some people who love this song and people who've don't it a little dull. I think I fell a little more in love with this task because of a mix of the powerful lyrics and being at that age where the powerful lyrics hit me in the chest hard. Tool has been one of the few bands who have been able to hit me with extreme emotional reaction. There's a lot of other bands that hit me on an emotional level, but tool is on a different plain and just hit in a different way

I would have never noticed that they actually sped up, if David hadn't marveled over it. when you think about it, it makes sense, because of the section at the very end. speeding up the tempo ever so slightly and then dropping into a halftime feel, as David said, creates the illusion of having slowed down, then, at the end, when they go back into regular time, the ending has that extra energy because of the increased tempo. Fricking brilliant! Thanks, David!

It cracks me up that 9.1 is a “low” score for Tool - whenever you go over 8.5 I’m amazed. And tbh, then I forget the number almost immediately. But I always remember your commentary. Seeing you connect with a song that actually challenges you and delights is just too much fun. Wonder if you’ll ever get to (more?) Jane’s Addiction. Some great live stuff out there. Either way, rock on David, Thanks for the joy.

That entire album is a masterpiece, well worth the wait. I know many people love Lateralus. And why wouldn't they, it's a great album. But for me, Fear Inoculum completely blows it out of the water. This song ranks slightly below Pneuma and the title song in my book though. The 9.1 fits well, I think, which is kind of crazy for a song that isn't the best on the album. But it's Tool, so there's that. I loved your remark about how melodic Danny's drumming is. That for me is a key to why I love Tool despite there being only 3 instruments, which I'm usually not a fan of. Danny basically plays for two.

Tool, masters of using instrumental delay effects just right. They have kind of a feel for when to use it, and how to not overdo it. You discribed it just right. The delay on the bass is so great, because it's not so much, that it becomes the main focus for the listener, it's just right.

@DH here's a clip i recorded a couple years ago: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eXtkp9VufK6XfNI.html I first saw the technique during a live performance of Jambi, but they go full bore in Invincible. I've been playing guitar since ~1997 and while I can't for example replicate all of what what Steve Vai or John Petrucci play, I can at least recognize their techniques when I hear them. The first time I saw this it ruined me. I'd never seen it, and what I was seeing didn't match what I was hearing. Until it did. And now it's apparent across several TOOL songs. I can't think of any other band that does it, but I'm fairly myopic in my media consumption.

That's at least according to live videos and covers I have watched as well as my ear and knowing that Justin's pedal board rivals Danny's set up in pieces. I've been studying and playing music since the age of 3, so listening to music and reading music is second nature to me. Tool definitely does some complex things with their song writing and arranging, they are definitely what I would call a 5 Brain Band.

This one feels stretched out to me. Like they got stuck on repeat a couple times.

I love TOOL but his song is giving me almost nothing emotionally. Technically it is great, but I feel nothing.

Question..at the risk of sounding COMPLETELY STUPID...Isn't 7/8 time just 7/4 time in "double time"???

Technically, there is no difference from a standpoint of straight counting of beats per measure. There is a difference in approach and feel though, it's hard to describe.

Who cares what the beat count is, focus on the song itself and it’s meaning.
