In the solo section, Danny plays a pattern with his right hand, starting with 5 drums, then 4, then 3, then 2 before before the double-bass comes in. You know something is coming with the tension that collapsing pattern is building, and then it finally releases with the thunderous basses and the richest fills of the song. It's utterly brilliant, and his live playing in this recording is terrifyingly close to the studio album, including all those fills. He composed those and placed them exactly where he wanted them. A true master. The rest of the album is equally amazing. Descending is actually my favorite track, but doesn't receive a lot of online attention. Headphones are a must.

You will see those drummers that have an arsenal of drums surrounding them like Neil Peart that have more drums and accessories than anyone can play for any song. Danny Carrey uses every single drum and accessory in his kit for this song. That's impressive because he hasn't just got a few extra toms, cymbals and double bass drums. He's got a lot of stuff there, and that impresses me because he uses ALL of it.

Honestly Danny Carey breaks the rating scale in that yes he may be able to add more embellishments or arrange it differently so that technically it may have a more by the book structure but he didn't. He played it the way he did because that's the way he wanted it to sound. He's not playing at the max of his capabilities he playing the song the way it needs to played so that it has the desired effect. Tools music is planned to perfection and anything that do that seems less than perfect is actually perfect because it was purposeful and deliberate being done to create a specific energy, very much like casting a spell (metaphorically of course). Every little nuance has a purpose and can't be done any better because it can't be done any other way. To do it differently would change the recipe for the spell and it wouldn't work.

One of the better reviews of the Pneuma drum cam video. I really enjoyed how your head exploded at 8:48. Danny does that to all of us. All of TOOL’s songs change time signatures multiple times throughout. A few change dozens of times.

As always with Tool by the time you figure out where "one" is and start to count it out, they change it up:) This makes me want to watch you react to Schism by Tool now, just to watch you try to count it out lol. It's a great song anyway with some very creative drum parts. Also one of the greatest bass lines known to man.

great reaction! in regards to the hihat placement, if i recall correctly, its because his kit was so big, that he experimented with it as a way to avoid crossing hands, and he liked it so much he kept it.

When you're talking about him doing separate patterns with each arm during the breakdown session, do remember that he's also got at least a 3rd pattern going, as he's got the high hat going with metronome regularity. Then there's the bass drum too... lol. Danny Carey is sometimes known as "The Octopus", and I am sure you can understand why... lol

Dude. It's a 10...🤟 Gotta say, I've watched most of these Danny reaction vids. And I absolutely loved yours Dave.. I'm going to subscribe straight away. You seemed genuinely blown away. And rightly so. I'm a drummer 51 years old ,started when I was 13/14 and I know that Danny Carey is one of the greatest of all time.. It's the timing...there's timing and there is Danny.. It's perfect to me. I wouldn't even attempt to do what he's doing. I just sit back in awe and smile.. And I kinda did with your reaction pal.. I think what I like is that a lot of reactions are kinda great but not rock/metal fans always. And you are and understand the technical side.. So yeah great reaction my friend, really made me smile...😁🤟🤟🤟

David - Nice take. Subscribed. Props for using both syllables, btw. I like the 9.5 because it allows for finding one instance of a "better" performance and upgrading to a 9.75. An old flame once said she had never met a David she didn't like. So far, she's been right. It's getting a little weird because at my age that's a lot of Davids. Keep smiling.

David this is my first trip to your channel sir and you are in for a treat. Danny Cary is a master of his craft. That is a fact! You are in a band so I think you will get off on this video. We'll see!!!! Danny had a birthday recently, he is 63 years old. He has played the drums for around 50 of those years. I submit to you that the first part of this fine video is just Danny warming up. Later in this video he busts loose! My favorite part is coming up. At 21:44 or so! I think he is a one-man drum line! Very special.........

Thank you! I've watched several reaction videos to this, and I believe you're the first to explicitly freak out over the part that starts around 17:40. That stretch where Danny is doing the two totally distinct patterns with each hand, while slowly building on each, is probably the most "no way!" thing I've ever seen a drummer do. I know all about muscle memory and limb independence, but this is just a whole other level.
