    What time signature is this drum beat? Danny Carey: "yes"

  • @glennl78

    @glennl78

    The time signature changes throughout the song. Also there is a lot of debate amongst people on the best way to count it but from what I have looked up the song starts off with a 33/16 then changes to a 25/8 and then finishes with a 33/16 again. About as far from a standard 4/4 beat as you can get I believe.

    There's so much Tool I'd love to see you go through. Wings for Marie 1 & 2 The lead singer wrote him for his mother. Incredible. You'll also like The Pot, Lateralus.. Oh, the song the Grudge has a 25 second powerful held scream. I would to see your reaction to the lead singers other band A Perfect Circle. The song Disillusioned is beautiful. It'll make you kinda teary eyed but it's not really sad. Check them out and the Tool Army will follow. ✌️ 💕

    Left arm hitting 4 or 5 Timba pads to his left, right arm going on 2 pads, 3 or 4 toms & the snare, left leg hitting the high-hat pedal, right foot hitting the bass pedal all at different time signatures. If he dropped his shorts I bet he can smash a symbol in a 5th time sig.

(just a tip tho to avoid common pitfalls, stay away from official Tool Music videos as they are wayy to distracting for reactions & also there are very few live performances with good quality, so best to stick to studio tracks or lyric videos). there are allot of great tracks for u to journy through but to name a few > The Pot, 46&2, Lateralus, Vicarious, Right In Two

    what I love about Danny especially, as another drummer - his feel for a groove and how to perfect it. that long tom fill/solo part - and please don't understand this as a negative assessment - is in itself a very repetitive beat which by that wouldnt be so hard to perform, meaning the strokes he's hitting with both hands are basically repeating themselves. but his ability to move both the right and left arm across the different toms, keeping the overall pace and shifting intensity of the hits ... that is what makes this actually very, very impressive to me. and yes, I havent even mentioned yet the foot work he's performing alongside with the precision of a clockwork :')

    Aileen you have selected a darn great video.... This video is a Danny Carey solo start to finish. You'll LOVE it. The first few minutes are Danny warming up! How about that warm and wonderful smile? At 4:40 it arrived. When you reviewed Whole Lotta of Love you asked who has been suduced by Led Zeppelin? The skills in this video may do it again. Danny's skill set is amazing!! He is at a level few can achieve. I consider him a master of his craft. You make up your own mind. He is still in the warm up phase here. He has been drumming for about 50 years. Longer than you have been alive! Focus on his hand speed. Watch real hard when the lights begin to flash... On a side note Tool is on tour now with an old man named Alice Cooper. I am planning to go see them up in South Western PA. I hope they do this song. You just witnessed perfection!! On another channel I submitted a theory -- With advances in AI I think this may be a robot. And you said it also. Take care and please keep these reviews coming. Thank you beautiful......

    I am an old dude and it warms my heart to watch young people appreciate great music. When you said "how?" I knew that you got it. Besides being arguably the best drummer of all time in my opinion, Danny is genuinely great human being. Watch the video of him playing at a school talent show with some young ladies, it is so wholesome. Great video.

    10:13 I've been asking that very same question with that very same look on my face whenever Danny Carey is behind a drum kit for close to twenty years now. Also, if you want to see/hear Carey blow your mind, check out Ticks & Leeches.

    Aileen, You have selected a danny (pun intended)!!! This entire video is one amazing drum solo! Therefore you my pretty have selected a master doing whar he does best. The band is pretty darn good also.... His hand speed is unreal...... My favorite part of the video is later when the overhead lights start to flash. You'll see..... Shockingly this is merely a warmup. He cuts loose in a while. If my math is correct, Danny has been playing the drums around 50 years. After one half of a century of doing one thing you should be good. He is great!!!!! There is that smile. Did he take your breath away?? Keep watching, the best is yet to come. Hang on!!!! I think it is around 12:something. 11:24 to be exact! You said Ah my God!!! So you reacted like I thought you would! Not surprised!!!!! Is that special or what?? Maynard and the others are great also. But Danny steals the show in my book!! From your breathing & gasps you agree.... Impressive!!!!!!????? I have written on other channels that he may be a robot. A I & robotics have come a long, long way. You decide!!!! I think he is a MASTER of his craft!!!!!!! I agree this is at a high level....... Thank you.

    Tool is very much a drum and bass centric band. Adam Jones is one of the most fundamentally sound guitarists alive, while MJK chimes in after the fact with some powerfully painful vocals. Tool gives me chills every time I listen.

    I marched a multiple national championship drumline back in college in 2001 and 2002, and a couple of guys in the the 'line went to see Tool in concert during their Lateralus tour, and they came back to campus telling us about Danny's kit, and how at the time, and I guess even in present day if you think about it, how revolutionary it is that he places his hi-hat cymbal in the center of the kit, as opposed to the right side. Most drumset players cross their hands with the traditional setup, yet with Danny's approach, he's thinking differently, as that center positioning allows him as much power on the snare as he wants off his left hand. OR, he can switch and play the hi-hat leading with his left with his snare his off his right hand should he choose to do that. The only other drumset player I'm familiar with that takes this same approach, is Mike Mangini of Dream Theater.
