The pure blunt honesty of this song's lyrics always stood out to me. "Fuck your God", "he did this", "the one who left you broken down and paralyzed"...he's questioning her by trying to point out why her faith doesn't make sense, but there's a bitterness to it. These are thoughts he may have never articulated right to her face, but feelings he wrestled with inside and decided to let out in this song. The instrumentals really back up the anger, and the backup vocals from Billy Howerdel are the finishing touch. Just a really good song.

Fun anecdote. I was in high school when this came out, and had several friends in bands. One guy was a singer for one and they would do shows at schools sometimes (dances and whatnot) and usually had Judith in their set list. But the schools didn’t allow them to cuss in the songs. So he would always scream “HUG YOUR DOG!” It’s been over 20 years and it still makes me laugh

And honestly, who would feel any different after experiencing what he has. The most important thing to me about God, the universe, or whatever you choose or not choose to believe in, is truth. maynard's mother interpretation occults much deeper meaning regarding "ocean (of chaos)" of mind, by which TOOL encourages listeners to "(learn to) swim". "mer de noms" = sea of names. "threw you the obvious and you flew with it on your back, a name in your recollection, down among a million same. difficult not to feel a little bit disappointed, and passed over when i've looked right through, see you naked but oblivious. and you don't see me." marie is a name derived from word for the "sea". a "marinade", for instance, is a salty brine. anyways, try it out. don't just focus on maynard's mother, but "mother of mind", of a collective. recall "merkaba" lyrics: "omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent, without judgement" (without condition) ...from 10000 days wings 2: "judith marie, unconditional oneeeeeeeee!"

This song is nearly the same story with my mom. I was raised Catholic, but at about age 18, I started asking questions and doing research, looking at history, and now I'm a full-fledged and open atheist and it wasn't due to same personal event in my life or my mom's situation; it was more naturally acquired. I think religion (well, certain religions) really stops people from thinking rationally and dims intellect. It has done far more negative things for humanity than good. That said, i don't go out of my way to get in people's face about; I'll debate and discuss in a friendly manner if they ask. Nice reaction 👍 BTW dig the ink and your style. look forward to more of your reactions!

One of the best songs ever written imo. the lyrics are just so raw and honest, but it was obviously written out of love for a mother who is very sick. And then if you mix it with the instrumentals, you have a song that is actually saying the same thing. As a guitar player i wished i wrote those guitar riffs they are beautiful, especially that riff with the slider, they are so mournful. its very rare nowadays that we get songs where the lyrics, melodies and instrumentals are saying the same thing.

Similar thing happen to my mother who is married to my stepdad who is a preacher. She prayed for pain in her shoulder for a week to go away and it became intolerable to finally go to the ER for an occurring heart attack (90% heart blockage). Everyone believes in god in my family except for this guy 🤚 and of course family was waiting for the results including her worship leader who given god praise after the Dr told us everything. It took everything to keep my mouth shut! God had a week of prayers to show up.

Loved the reaction, this song brings me to tears after I knew what it was about. People start to lose their faith and question WHY, then like you said "people say its gods plan" well his plan really sucks. I lost my dad last year cause someone pulled out in front of him while he was on his motorcycle and I started to ask WHY, why does a child molester or murderer get to live but my dad was taken from us. This song always hits home.

APC is actually Billy Howerdel’s band (guitarist). He is a roadie and is friends with Maynard and wanted to create a band. He made the band Ashes Divide because he felt APC was kind of turning into Maynard’s band. His Ashes Divide album (he only has done one so far) is absolutely amazing.

The thing I love about Maynard, is he never willingly puts himself in the spotlight. He surrounds himself brilliant musicians in every project he's part of, and doesn't take attention away from their own genius. The man is a master at building REAL supergroups for every mood you're in. ❤

A little more about Maynard , he is a very successful wine maker and his Signature wine is named Judith has won several prestigious awards . His Caduceus Cellar and Ostiaries are in Jerome, Az . Fun fact , his wife operates the Puscifer store next door to Caduceus which has a Barber shop downstairs , and I didn’t know at the time but his wife washed my hair before I got the haircut . When I walked upstairs to pay , someone told me that was Maynard’s wife . I’m glad I didn’t know because I’m such a nerd I would of said something to embarrass myself . Also , Judith is a little pricey, but if you like white wine , I recommend The Diddler , and I’m not a huge white wine drinker . Enjoy , and I’ll stop boring your channel with my dumb comments.

Can't wait till you get to "wings for Marie 1&2"...still brings me to tears after a million listens. Judith, Jambi, Jimmy, The Patient...so many of the trifecta's material come for Maynard and his mother. A Perfect Circle is where you get to appreciate Maynard's vocal talent. I would like to see you review "3 Libra's" next... you'll understand when that moment comes in the song...when the music actually touches your soul, no cliche, ACTUALLY TOUCHES YOUR SOUL.

As a stroke survivor, I can totally understand why Judith clung to God even more. Recovery can be insanely lonely and the thoughts that run through your head can range from why me? to fuck everything, I didn’t turn to God I just summoned up strength I never knew I had to get back to somewhat normal. God works in mysterious ways…… yes Paz is HOT. excellent intro to set it up.

Even though this video is over a year old, I’m glad I discovered it. I wasn’t sure at first, but I thought I’d give it a try, and I’m glad I did. Your eloquence and emotional expression are so accurate. Back in 2000, seeing the video the first time, I recall feeling this great amount of exhilaration. I was surprised, captivated and instantly wanted more, so, the excitement for the album was real, and I recall this anticipation to hear the album in its entirety. ‘Lateralus’ was released almost exactly a year later, so there was this period in between where I explored A Perfect Circle, ‘Mer De Noms’ in particular, and it was a remarkable journey, as I learned so much about Billy, and Maynard’s connection to him. Till this very day, listening to Judith and certain songs on the album, it resonates in such an undeniably powerful manner. I can only appreciate seeing a review where someone can show and describe how the music makes them feel, and what they can take from it and make it part of their lives. The impact it has on us is immense, that’s when we realize the power music has. Thank you for your video. I enjoyed it thoroughly.
