    “Danny Carey with his polyrhythms!” He is certainly the master, but what always amazed me about Tool is that the whole band has to understand polyrhythms, including Maynard. Adam, Justin and Maynard have incredible rhythmic knowledge. If they didn’t, they would be completely lost as Danny does his typical Danny things. Just try singing along with almost any song off Lateralus. You are going to be hard-pressed to come in on all of the weird offbeats and syncopated cues. All 4 guys are rhythmic geniuses.

    Adam is one of the greatest guitar players on the planet. If you listen to many TOOL songs, Adam vert rarely plays a solo. But what he does so perfectly accents not only the song but his skills are what not to play. Too many guitar players are all too willing to fill a song with their own self interest.

    As a fellow musician, I totally understand not gravitating towards the lyrics. But If there was ever two songs to read the lyrics, it's Lost Keys and Rosetta Stoned. The lyrics are very straightforward and hilarious. Would encourage you to read them in your own time and maybe post a follow-up on what you thought about them. Love the reactions!

Here are some interesting facts...Adam Jones, the guitarist, worked on several films in Hollywood doing makeup and set design, including Jurassic Park, Terminator 2, Dances with Wolves, and Ghostbusters II, and Freddy Kruegar. Great reaction. Tool really likes subdiving 4/4 I to groups of 3 3 2, as you observed here. Right in Two uses this but adds another 3 to run in 11/8. If you haven't done that, Adam's guitar effect phasing out at the climax is one of my favorite Tool moments.

  • @violindylan
    @violindylan Жыл бұрын

    Great Reaction, and THANK YOU you for pointing out the difference between 4/4 and 8/8! You are so good in finding the patterns, but sometimes one doesn’t see the forest for the trees. I could relate so much to the frustration you expressed in 12:44 even if totally unnecessary, as you had figured the 11/8 long before that point. To me it feels like a bar of rather slow 4, with triplets on 1, 2 and 3 and a shorter 4 of only 2/8. Ag ain, mathematically the same, just a question of how one feels the music. In 19:28 the triplets in a bar of 4/4 reappear, only with a more even feel to it, as this time all 4 beats in each bar are equally long. 21:02 to me feels like a 5 bar loop, speeding the feel up again by switching to 3/4 that are faster though than the 4/4, as they are not subdivided into triplets, but only two eights in each quarter note.

    Don't think I've heard you score a song that high before... This is brilliant though. Nothing difficult about the lyrics hear and I'm sure other's will go into detail, but it's about a guy tripping on something (MDM or something supposedly) and supposedly got kidnapped by aliens, spooned, and told the secrets of the ending of humanity, but he forgot his pen and couldn't write it all down to tell the world. He's probably a bit slow in the first place if he can't remember the secrets... I've done tons of shit and my memory is not that damn bad lol. Thanks for the react. I don't know why I watch these things. Nostalgia from being a life-long tool enthusiast, I imagine....

    Too bad you aren't into lyrical content. "Like the time Dave floated away" seems incredibly appropriate and absolutely relevant for this gem. This one was fun live, a truly life altering experience for me. If you like the song there is an incredible deconstruction of it by a guy named Johnkew here on YT. Some of the stuff Danny is pulling out of his ass on this track are next level shit. John does a great job of explaining (Beato style) some of the many challenges covering it, and picking out little details the casual listener would never pick up on. Great cover too, well played and professionally presented. Fantastic to hear and see the song played with the drums up front and heavy in the mix. Great content Dave, thanks for posting. I knew you would appreciate this one. links follow deconstruction kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z3mopJakiN20nag.html cover kzread.info/dash/bejne/nat6q5Nmos2rpbA.html

    Seconded on John Kew. John Kew's videos are great for understanding how complex Danny's work is and how the band interacts with all of the time signatures. Saying that, it's all over my head and ability to understand, but it does make it somewhat understandable. It would be great if there were more Pneuma-style drum cam videos of Danny, but without that, John Kew is the closest we get. Liked your breakdown on Adam. Adam is sometimes overlooked because he is surrounded by such overwhelmingly talented musicians and he doesn't do anything flashy, but he is so creative and unique. Adam is the flavor that makes Tool different from any other band to me.

    it's too bad when folks don't pay attention to the lyrics in this song, it's easily the best part

    this is a musical representation of a dmt trip, and it still hurts my head after 15 years, good piece of art but my least favourite from tool (still good though)

    So watching this for the first time. Actually just found your reaction videos. I really think that you are missing it. I understand that MARK said react to Rosetta Stoned, but there is no Rosetta Stoned without Lost Keys. I totally understand if this was your first time hearing this, but I REALLY think Mark forgot to mention LOST KEYS. He must have been out his mind!!

    For you David there really was no need at all to listen to Lost Keys, anyone that's watched just a few of your reactions knows that lyrics really aren't your thing like 99% of the time! So glad you also ignore people telling you to stop counting, you can clearly see that you enjoy counting and working out time signatures, at the end of the day it's your channel! Don't like, don't watch! I'm sure that the vast majority of people that pay for your time to react to songs for them are aware of all these things beforehand. Continue being your great self dude!
