There absolutely is a rhythm, an evenly spaced, repeating rhythm. It's just that the rhythm is polymetric, it's complex, but it's there, and it's easy to count it out once you hear it.

yeh they keep the same tempo but switch the signatures. Tool (and even the likes of bands like Dillinger Escape plan) there is almost always something you can Nod too and usually it goes through the entire track, even if there are mad changes, Polyrhythms etc

Don't be an azzhole. Tell them what the polymeter is. Name the two concurrent time signatures for the first minute of the song and give them a time stamp on where to start the count.

On the intro Dannys playing a custom built Mandala electric pad that he coopted to help design, it makes different tomes depending on where he strikes and is made to sound like a set of south asian ghatams, and immediately plays after another electric pad made to sound like a tabla, his set is a custom built hybrid of electic and traditional drums. 😁 youve got to appreciate dannys ability to change time sigs and tempo so fluently, especially when he gets octopus arms and holds a different time sig with each limb. Thats why its so hard to bob to on a first listen, but after hearing it a few times you intuitively puck up where and when to bob and weave 😁 great reaction guys

My guys. One of the best drummers in the world, Rob Portnoy, even with musical notation and signatures, took HOURS just to find the time signature on this. Tool uses so many interwoven polyrhythms that it’s almost like 4 people in 4 different states of being come together and it somehow works. If it helps, the timing is basically 11s. 6/6, 6/6, 6/5, 5/5. Think 6/6/5. What Rob described as 665, “The neighbor of the Beast”.

Regarding the Larry Bird-Outfit: He´s wearing the jersey of the home team in every arena he plays in as a sign of respect to the audience and his hosts. He´s a huge basketball fan anyway. At a height of 6´5" he played sucessfull highschool basketball and decided against a college scholarship to concentrate on drumming instead. Yes, that man is 6'5" and 59 years old in this video. When i saw him live 30 years ago, he wore nothing but a loincloth and looked like he´d be cut out of marble.

Why did you cut the song more than two minutes short? Danny is also playing polyrhythmic; keeping one specific time sig on certain drums and playing another time sig on others. They do the same with different instruments and the vocals. A coupe of instruments will be on one time sig while another instrument and vocals are in another time sig.

I can SHAKE my head to this. Lol Carey is literally bopping his head to the music. No rhythm? Really? Their music has so much rhythm I can't not move. And I'm a white lady who always went to the clubs where they played R & B and funk in the 70s, 80s etc, and I can't tell you how many ppl commented on how well I danced. I can't fathom not thinking this is rhythm or being so used to an electronic sound behind a rap track, that never changes, that I only recognize that or R & B, pop, whatever, as being rhythmic. 😂 Hey, I love some rap - old west coast stuff my fave....but ya'll think mixing up rhythms means NO rhythm? 🤷
