Lyrics:
We barely remember who or what came before this precious moment
We are choosing to be here, right now
Hold on, stay inside
This holy reality
This holy experience
Choosing to be here in
This body, this body holding me
Be my reminder here that I am not alone in
This body, this body holding me
Feeling eternal, all this pain is an illusion
Alive, I
In this holy reality
In this holy experience
Choosing to be here in
This body, this body holding me
Be my reminder here that I am not alone in
This body, this body holding me
Feeling eternal, all this pain is an illusion
Twirling round with this familiar parable
Spinning, weaving round each new experience
Recognize this as a holy gift and celebrate this chance to be alive and breathing
The chance to be alive and breathing
This body holding me reminds me of my own mortality
Embrace this moment, remember
We are eternal, all this pain is an illusion

My sister walked into my room and asked if I was listening to “Wrench” again. I looked at her confused, then realized she was mentioning “Tool” and called it Wrench because it was a tool. The fucking nerve of her to think I’m smart enough to make that connection.

Well, I can agree, I can make an argument to disagree as well. I mean, the song is probably their most commercially successful and most. of the Toolarmy consider it one of the top 5 for sure. And with Tool that's hard to do. Also, there is probably a third of the entire population that knows what the Fibonacci sequence is now. So definitely deserving of the video. Now my counter argument to myself. This really feels like a courtroom for your pretend and like you're arguing with each other, but you're really on each other side. Anyway, that's a kangaroo court. That's a different tool song. Now, my counter argument would be no matter how great the video was. If Alex & Adam went back to Universal Studios and made the video. It could never live up to the expectations of the variance of pickiness levels within the ToolArmy. Also, all the haters or nickelback and rush fans would be in their feelings. Turn it down in every way possible. Oh, did I forget Nirvana, it's ok Everybody else did too.

Every time I listen to this song it reminds me of my dad who had a illness called ALS which kills the muscles in your body and slowly make your weaker. The doctors told us that he had only a few months to live but he actually lived for about 6 more years he was really strong, and now whenever I hear the lyrics “this body , this body holding me , we are eternal all this pain is an illusion.” It reminds me of him this song was also one of his favorites i really do miss him but not much I can do about it he’s always here in my heart and so is Tool🤟

I know it's kinda weird to actually take these kinds of things at face value especially on the internet but as someone who recently lost someone close to them too in a pretty tragic way, I understand what you mean. This was one of the songs I listened to the day she died. I rolled a fat joint in honour of her and smoked it while this played. The feelings and thoughts I experienced to it thinking about her was something I cannot fully explain but it was indeed profound and euphoric as you say. Condolences, dude.

i've listened to many albums that i hold dear to my heart, but lateralus, probably has to be at the very top of that list. i do not believe i will hear anything that comes close to this for the rest of my life. this album practically covers all bases and all range of emotions, discontention, anger, sadness, humility and self reflection, from the softest most honest lyrics in disposition, parabol and the patient, to the most intense, arguably downright metal vocals and riffs such as in ticks and leeches and triad. when i heard the holy trinity for the first time, i almost didn't believe what i was hearing, and to be honest, 2 years later i still don't.

Me, too. I think the plot to it is this: the men at the beginning are the "gods", aliens, higherpowers. The antennae guy is mankind, or an alien equal to such. The little guy is animal life, "lesser life". While the human rep is busy studying science and trying to unravel the universe, the lesser life is desperately trying to warn him of mortality and danger. The human doesn't listen, tries to rage at the coming death, then flees into the wilderness, but is ultimately overcome. He finally sees the light and energy of us all, and the two eyes represent Male and Female as a spiritual concept, both living equally in every living thing. They bind together at his death, his real or "third" eye opens, and he lays down into the interwoven fabric of life's light blanket...

In before people cite the quay brothers because kurt cobain was pissy one day he was asked about Tool. And also here to say that Adam does not deny the influence, in fact he claims his first few were in his own words “almost shameless rip offs”. But it wasn’t popular until Tool, and Adam took it and went beyond it and without a doubt did plenty that was his own thing. The symbolism, Adams unique style and delivery, combining it with Alex Greys super cerebral spiritual colorful identity… just so good. That whole gray scale, flat, blocky, almost black and white flat dead and dark certainty being doused in the bursting magical lively biology and spiritual illumination at the end couldn’t have made either pop any more than it did.

I realized this in 2021 at age 42: At the beginning of the video, a frame drops down, which creates a smaller "window" that we watch the video in. I never knew what that was about, I kind of thought it was some early 2000s internet pirate artifact and this was the only version of the video I could find, but I never gave it much thought (and I was completely wrong). The frame is there to make our brain think that we're watching a video of a certain size (smaller than the full screen), and the length of the video eventually convinces our brain that the video is that small. At a very specific moment around 8:45, the frame that's been there the entire time slowly zooms out as if the camera is zooming in, but the frame never re-appears, and the next scene is full-screen, physically larger than the video we've been watching. This tricks our brain into believing that we are actually seeing something "larger" or "greater" while it moves through the Alex Grey scenes at the end. Previously there was a limit or boundary, and the boundary gets slowly removed when enlightenment begins, effectively tricking our brain into thinking that we're now looking at something actually larger.

I hate to burst your bubble but the answer is drugs. Specific techniques are used throughout tool videos that rely on the ghosting effect given by hallucinogens. So much so that if you haven't done heavy psychs and watched these videos, then you just haven't seen them. This isn't just "oh dude weed, yeah man drugs are cool," these are very meticulous choices that take a ridiculous amount of fx skill to emulate. The entire video box set this comes off of is an absolute trip. It even intentionally fucks with you on the home screen, ensuring viewers will have the initial background burned in to their vision by the time the videos start playing. As a collection it is arguably one of the greatest artistic achievements of all time.

Have other bands done those things before? Sure .. have they done it to the level that Tool has? The three beings represent the body, mind and spirit/energy. When they unify you can find harmony. The mind is probably the one that brought the fruit, because from our conscience change is born.

Like in his book he said when he worked in the pet shop, that if he's gonna be working in a pet shop he's gonna try and put his all into it and do a good job (to that affect anyway). He just puts all into the things he's doing at the time. Really unique person that could have been anything or did anything. I am always happier making other people happy cuz i sometimes struggle finding happiness, and i feel better when i give others what i often struggle to find for myself. To be quite frank broski, I could give less fucks about myself if i truly felt like it. The message i get from this song is that our only purpose here on earth is choosing to be here and appreciate this gift of life that lies before us and i was just genuinely expressing that

Okay so 15+ years after discovering Tool and watching this video, I think I have somewhat of an understanding of the symbolism. I wanted to comment on this because I see many people confused about it (which is not surprising), and some people doubting it even having something to do with the music at all. So this will be my attempt at "dissecting" it, if you will. So strap in and grab some snacks because this will be a long read. And also, this is just my interpretation so feel free to share you own thoughts on this as there is so much going on and I don't claim to get it all. First of all we have the many small structures. One at first, then more and more. These I interpret to be the cells coming together to form our bodies. You can see at one point it looks like they are forming a spine and more. Also notice the big metal frame locking the picture frame in, limiting our view of the video (and our experience of life). We are now in our body and mind. The deformed guy enters the picture with a toolbox. This is revealed to contain a knife which is supposed to represent our intellect. The intellect, called Buddhi in yogic science, is just one part of many that makes up our full intelligence. The knife is a useful tool able that enable us to think logically, plan, make fire, tools, electricity and to generally survive in the world. Using this knife we can dissect the world around us (the apple in this case) and see what's inside. Using our intellect we can see that there is undeniably huge amount of intelligence around us as shown by the geometric star pattern within the apple. The knife however only cuts and cannot be used to form a fuller understanding of things due to it's nature, which is to cut. The intellect however is elevated to an unreasonable high regard within society which is problematic. It could be argued that the fantastic Adam Jones is suggesting that this tool is often used against us by corporations, governments etc, using marketing and propaganda tricks to get us to do shit and buy stuff as represented by the black goo spewing out in a circle as they hover above the table. As long as we only use our intellect to lead our lives we will always be stuck in this vicious cycle represented by the circle. The fact that they are three may also suggest that the intellect is very much tied to the three-dimensional (but i'm not entirely sure about this). To escape this cycle, we must stop using the only the intellect and instead look inward, represented by the hands forming the same star as in the apple. We now look inside ourselves and can begin to explore the full potential of our bodies and our full intelligence. The next part with the big stone pendulum eludes me somewhat and I'm not sure what it is supposed to represent. But a guess of mine is that with our new set of tools we can see the world and the laws that govern it (like gravity) in a new light. Next, we can see our ego, the little guy with the metal mask. When it first enters the video it is shot at a very close angle, making it look big but in reality it is not. The ego is not a bad guy really. It helps us survive by constantly being on the lookout for danger (wide eyes, clenched teeth, anxiety). Let's leave him be for now as we continue to explore the true nature of our bodies. Let's take a closer look at our nervous system (big tree thing). Let's scan our brain in the glass box to get a more complete picture of what our amazing brain is capable of, but also the limitations of it. We can also get a closer look at our problems, represented by the grey floating ball. These problems can range from being stuck on a deserted island with no water (big problem), to going through a breakup (can be very hard of course but not life ending), to not getting that sweet 1000 dollar cool brand bag (silly problem). We are still in this small room however but we are longing to step out of it as we can see that there is so much more through the tiny window of the big metal door. All the while our guy the ego keeps us from doing it as he reminds us of our survival and our problems (it's his job after all). So, next part is not clear to me either. They gray balls keep multiplying and kind of grows like a cancer which I interpret as we tend to make problems worse for ourselves by blaming them on others and other outside circumstances that we cannot control. This is a certain way to forever live in misery and can only lead to destruction (the cancer getting to us and our ego). The only thing we can fully control are ourselves. As the saying goes, it is not what happens to you but how we react to it that matters. Cheesy yes but there is truth to it. To be able to step outside these confines we must examine the nature of our ego and let go of it. Which is probably a painful thing to do but necessary in order to fully be able to fully explore the cosmos (the forest outside of our room). So let's do exactly that. Because the seemingly impenetrable and intimidating big metal door that blocks our access to this realm was actually open this whole time. We are now free to explore this endless forest and all of its beauty. We all still connected to the world and all of it's pain and suffering, joys and pleasures and it keeps following us as we explore this realm but we don't pay much attention anymore. Also while I'm writing this I'm inclined to see the gray balls as "wordly concerns" rather than just problems, although I guess we often tend to focus mostly on the problems I guess lol. Well, we have reached the end if our journey. In this newfound state we are able to perceive the whole cosmos in a simple leaf (or in a grain of sand). The metal frame put upon our screen is now gone... and I'll let the visuals and badass riff in the outro speak for itself.

About the pendulum/ that represents the swing of / or switching of polarity. Much like the shift of polarity in all. Hot and cold. Light dark. Good evil. Of course it differs in degree accordingly to each individual. This also relates to correspondence and Rhythm . If that makes sense. Hermetic principals in play lol

Had a crazy experience with this song in my past life. About 18 years ago or so. Getting to the other side of a nasty episode of buprenorphine withdrawal.
