They needed Ike Clanton as Ike's family was their base of operations in the Tombstone area and gave them a sense of purpose and reason for being there. He owned the local ranch where the "Cowboys" were formed and later wore their trademark red sashes. That isn't explained in the movie as there isn't enough time for all of the side story notes. They limit the story-line in these wide-ranging movies to pare down the screen time and give themselves literary license to mold the story into the conclusion run-ups. This isn't all historically accurate nor is it meant to be so they add drama and stuffing where they can to sell the movie. The Cochise County Coroner's inquest is correct and was held in Bisbee, Arizona. The inquest summary's handwritten notes were recently recovered boxed in an old closet and are available on-line - azmemory.azlibrary.gov/digital/collection/ccolch/id/126/ global-lingo.com/transcription-from-the-gunfight-at-the-ok-corral/ The full transcript is here - azmemory.azlibrary.gov/digital/collection/ccolch/search Most of the shooters and people during this time weren't well educated or speak Shakespearean quotes, etc., but were hardscrabble people trying to make a living in a tough environment. I've lived in the area and it still isn't well suited to ranching as feed and water are scarce with mining still practiced in the Dragoon and Superstition Mountains. Except for the exceptional write-up of the OK Corral shooting in the local paper - The Tombstone Epitaph, [which is still published weekly], and later picked up by Eastern papers and reprinted, the confrontation between the Earps, Clantons and the McLowerys, would probably only be a minor footnote in history. Shootings like this occurred in many places and times in the old west. It is possible that Tombstone itself would have probably blown away into the dustbin of western lore had it not been for this newspaper story. law2.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/earp/epitaph.html

I wondered the same thing, I'm guessing Ike could be efficient as a killer as long as he had the upper hand. He just turned to a sniveling chickenshit soon as he lost it.
