I love this scene, this was one of Val Kilmer's best performances, if not the best. The real Johnny Ringo was found next to a creek with a gunshot to the head, the consensus by, most historians, is that he shot himself, so I liked how they included the head shot in this scene. Great freaking movie, a top 10 all time western, in my opinion.

That look on Doc's face when he said "I Wasn't" was EVERYTHING, scared the shhh out of Johnny .. Johnny for the first time was shook and had to come up with some false bravery since he knew there was no going back.

The scene perfectly illustrates the contrast between the 2 gunfighters: Ringo spent the earlier part of the movie impressing people with his gunplay and intimidating everyone, while Doc amused him, studied him, and never showed more than he needed to. But when Doc was ready, there was never any hesitation, and he never started the fight, even when he challenged him for the last time as he just saw it as unfinished business. Both were deadly, but while Ringo was in it for glory and thrills, Doc was in it to kill if him or Wyatt was threatened. One killed for thrills, the other when it was called for, and didn't miss. And Ringo died so that Wyatt would live. Great storytelling.

They say acting is all about reacting. You see a lot of sitcom stars who just recite lines. The pure beauty of talented actors is the subtext. You can see it in Ringos eyes when it goes from worry to recklessness when he commits to the contest. I think Val’s character was more complex where he wants to show that he hopes he is going to lose so he can avoid dying of tuberculosis, and disappointment he hasn’t yet found a worthy advisory to challenge him.

It's believed somebody shot him with a rifle while sitting in the split of a tree where he was found. His horse was found with his boots upside down in the stirups, which westerners did when bedding down..to keep critters from making a home in them. Scorpions and rattlesnakes...

The actual gunshot was to the right temple consistent with a suicide. Movie had it to left temple. And Doc did just walk over the gravesite as they buried Ringo where they found him. Of course, the characters wouldn't have known that.

Little trivia for you: Willem Dafoe was one who was originally considered for the role of Doc Holliday, but because of his film The Last Temptation Of Christ, the studio decided against him. In fact, that aforementioned film has still kept Dafoe out of certain roles, due to its controversial nature.
"Play for blood, remember?"

Wow, best time to have a good friend! John P.

Easily one of the best scenes in a western. Both actors delivered wonderful performances, both subtle and dramatic. This is the modern western film of our time, and this scene is one of the reasons why.

Remember a friend that would stand up for you when he’s around?.... that’s Doc holiday
Wyatt earp :"i cant beat him, can i?" Doc : "no" *doc > ringo > wyatt earp
That look on Doc's face when he said "I Wasn't" was EVERYTHING, scared the shhh out of Johnny .. Doc had been wanting to kill him since the scene in the bar he was looking for the right opportunity to end him..
Doc knew that he was at death's door--so he had no fear. "Let's do this" was in his entire persona.

The way he walked between the two trees was the illusion of death's door, which I thought was well done, like Doc was literally walking outside from the mausoleum.

Because there were some incredible performances in movies that were not cliched bro movies with catchy one-liners.
Someone please get Val Kilmer an Oscar!

A bullet to the head is quicker. Tuberculosis is a slow lingering disease which causes chest pain, coughs, night sweats , nausea and generally weak and unwell. The cure is a multitude of tablets which is like a chemical wash and the side effects are extreme sickness and nausea so bad that Medical Professionals check the “cure” is being taken. In my case 6 months. I lost most of my left lung and now get every chest infection with bouts of pneumonia in the winter months. Some times I think a bullet would be a welcome release!
