Not sure if anyone commented on this already, but I love how this scene ties into the ending. Not just the reference to the four horsemen of the apocalypse, but the fact that Johnny Ringo shoots the priest right in the forehead. That’s exactly the same spot where Doc Holiday eventually shoots Ringo.

It's a prophesy from the book of Revelation written a few thousand years ago. "And I looked and behold a pale horse, and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth. Used the King James version here since it sounds a little more eerie with the metre of that old language.

One of the finest collection of actors ever assembled in a film. Russell, Biehn, Boothe, Elliott , Rooker et.al. At the apex, is the incomparable performance of Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday. That this artistic triumph didn't win the Academy Award in a cakewalk only proves one thing. The Oscar's are a political joke. His Holliday is probably the finest rendering of a famous character in film history. Like the great spaghetti westerns of Sergio Leone, Tombstone doesn't neatly package its stars. Unlike the Gunfight at the OK Corral, it delves into the core of each character to uncover why they became sociopathic figures. Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas would have been in awe of the latter performances of Kilmer and Russell. Their Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday are the template for all time. Anyone who knows the difference between great acting and a High School play knows one thing. Kilmer's epic portrayal ranks with the greatest ever seen. Possibly beyond.

For anyone who may be wondering: this scene is similar to the real events. In real life The Cowboy gang ambushed a group of Mexican Soldiers who entered into the US through skeleton canyon, the Gang consisting of Old man Clanton(the original leader) Brocius, Ringo, Ike and Billy Clanton, the McLaury Brothers, Claiborne, and a few others would suddenly open fire from atop the canyon and kill almost all the Soldiers. About 2 years later in 1881, the cowboy gang did it again in the same area against Mexican Smugglers who were delivering $5,000 in silver.

@@sartech25 Old Man Clanton was killed shortly after the second Skeleton canyon massacre in a massacre known as the Guadelupe canyon massacre. Clanton along with 6 other cowboys were herding the stolen cattle they got when one morning, a bunch of Mexican soldiers opened fire on the gang killing Clanton (who fell dead into the camp fire) and 4 other cowboys (one of which was the last of the 3 benson stage robbers Wyatt Earp was looking for named Jim Crane, the other 2 were killed after attempting to rob the Hazlett brothers) 2 of the cowboys survived and almost waged a war between Mexico since the cowboys were making constant raids on the Border cities in Mexico. This occurred in August of 1881, with the 3 dead benson stage robbers killed, the deal between Wyatt Earp & and Ike Clanton (where Ike would rat out the robbers and get the $3,600 reward and Earp would get the recognition for the upcoming Sheriff election) was broken and led Ike to a serious drinking problem where his Paranoia led to the O.K. Corral.

A lot of people get confused when they watch this scene in the movie. The guy working as the translator for Curly Bill was named Florentino Cruz. His nickname was Indian Charlie. One of the most common questions that people have is why Florentino was not able to translate what the priest said. It’s not that he did not speak Spanish well. There are two reasons why Florentino was not able to translate what the priest said. First off, the priest was speaking in a somewhat archaic form of Spanish. Second, Florentino had no formal education. Johnny Ringo knew Latin and he had a formal education. That’s the reason Johnny knew what the priest was saying.

Been years since I seen this, didn't even remember Ringo being in it. Probably cause he just sat back and watched his whole squad in action and didn't have any action himself with the exception of shooting the pastor at the end.
