It's so sad how much ambition this game had, and it could have been at least playable maybe even enjoyable with an added few months of play testing. Iron out the bugs, give the players a bit more direction, maybe scrap the segments that didn't work. If anything the game would have been playable and defendable. Personally I think the game needed another year, but then it might have been too long of a development.

It wasn't only Eidos. I love Core, but they made some serious mistakes too. The team had no clear structure, motivation often times was low. They had such bad organization that they even had forgotten to code controls for the PC I think until some weeks before the gold status. Gavin rummery said this in a long and very good Eurogamer documentary. It's easy to blame it all on Eidos, but it isn't right.

if Eidos didn't force them to release it when the movie came out we would have had an even better game. I feel for Core Design. Eidos ruined them for it. Why I will never show Eidos any respect for what they did.

I don’t respect Eidos from rushing Core from their incomplete TR game series since... TR3 has several items remove almost like AOD. Good fucking gosh, Eidos 😒 They need to give Core extra time from finishing their TR game especially AOD... I wish Core Design’s game studio wasn’t force to be shut down. Too bad one of ex-Core Design member discontinue from not making more games anymore... I was upset when I read that.

They should blame Eidos instead of Core because Eidos always rushed Core from their unfinished TR game series since TR3 almost had all items remove and then... deleted levels from AOD. Thanks for nothing, Eidos 😒

@@megabyte5726 I mean..sure..tho I feel like the usage of terrible in your response sounds like a jab tho I could be wrong But if it is a jab The opinion of it being terrible is subjective. Flawed game yes, but I'd argue it isn't terrible. Especially after you've upgraded skills a bit, or if you play a modded version which mods the game with things already in the games data. I mean even without those things, it's still fun and a decent game. Controls become smoother as the game progresses, movements less clunky and location diversity etc. Tho I completely understand the opening of the game feeling clunky and a mess turns many players off continuing and that's a huge flaw and part of the reasons the game is broken early on.

Sure if we ignore the bugs and glitches that happen during casual play. ignore the controls. ignore some of the telegraphing, ignore some of the camera work. ignore some of the level design then im sure we have a masterpiece. there are too many flaws to defend this game being good. i mean i also like this game. but the game is not good.

You can visit Renne before you see Bouchard and you will be able to sell your items for money. However, if the game was finished it is said you would've been able to actually buy additional weapons using the money you find. This is my favorite Tomb Raider game, in my opinion. The hard controls made it more fun and challenging. I usually replay the game again and try to find all the collectibles that I have missed. The levels were quite frustrating and made me quit the game, but through time, I finally got the hang of it. It became more easier and I would complete the difficult levels much faster. Anyway, I'm not sure how difficult it is on PC, I only played the game on my PlayStation 2. ;-)

I just wanted to say, you hating on the controls is exactly why this game was satisfying to me and many of us; it was challenging. Sure it may be annoying at times but that is the whole point, it incentivizes you to be more precise, as opposed to other games which just spoon feed you into cutscenes. Also, the whole of seasons is one of the best levels in the entire series, had brilliant memories of that level, especially the Breath of Shades. I honestly can't understand why people hate this game, to me it was one of the best, particularly in the story. The mystery, the enigma, the dark brooding atmosphere, the terror, it felt so good.

You can like what ever you want man. But its fairly obvious why some people don't like this game. Its right there in front of you. I doubt poor broken controls are intentional. Even if it did handle 100% fine the puzzles aren't super challenging either. It just requires some effort on your part. There's nothing wrong with liking something flawed, or even liking something heavily flawed. Its when you start blindly defending the flaws as intentional, okay, or even good that games become stagnant or ingrained in certain behaviors. If you really can not understand why people don't like this game i don't know what to tell you man.

  • @alexanderjaggers3761

    @alexanderjaggers3761

Okay, I didn't actually expect a response, so thank you. Let me put it another way, the controls in this game are what I see as a part of a game, and that means I don't think if one part fails, that ruins the entire game. Furthermore, when you look it compared to the other previous games, they're not that dissimilar, the previous three were platform based, auto-aim games, and yes even buggy. The controls just weren't that worse to me. I think that the other game positives outweigh it faults because, IMO, it had an enriching set design, mindful puzzles, lots of levels, with variations between them, and a scary and mysterious atmosphere and story which intrigued me as a kid and still does to this day. I'll accept that people don't like it, but that won't affect how I'll play it.

I liked AOD as far as the story and the potential it presented when it was announced back in 03. It could have been great if it wasn't rushed and released when it was clearly unfinished. The controls were absolutely terrible. That was 85% of the reason why the game was frustrating. It was stiff, wonky and completely buggy. However I really miss the CORE era of TR; it was the best.

The woman who: has killed Atlantean gods, slayed a dragon, murdered a space-spider thing, killed Seth, the God of Death and stopped the headless horseman from killing her Irish priest-friend." I don't know but the enumeration of all of Lara's crazy deeds and kills (boss fights) just made me laugh so much cuz I imagined just how weird and hilarious it would sound to someone who's never played any of the old TR games. The list of enemies that Lara has fought, especially as bosses, is super varied and... complex, to say the least :))

Great review! Playing it now for 2nd time, and enyoing it :D Once u get (kind of) used to controls and blink one eye on bugs, there are many things that this game does even better than before. Level design is great, high level of details in small spaces, atmosfere maybe the best so far, music state of art, talking with npc''s is cool adition, Lara is finaly a true character with personality, cinematic parts give the game more adventurous feel, and player feels more engaged in a story. But one has to really be a hardcore TR fun like myself to get used to overall feel of unfinished product. However, I would take another sequel of this level of quality over anything that came later. It' s more complex, less arcade "fast food"game, more true TR. My 2 cents.

I mean, you just wanted to know more about these things. I'm sure this is going to blown up your mind but you're not intended to empty dozens or clips hoping for Kurtis to hit the other pods on Boaz's side. There is a key for manually switching target which the game never tells about. The guy keeps aiming at the the same pod even when it's broken so you have to press the key to switch target. Back in the days I gave up with it because I didn't know how the fuck it was inteded to be done and I didn't have internet back then. Also how the fuck did you know Lara can commando crawl in this game? She never tells about it and it's required to go through the lasers in Von Croy's apartment.. it took ages for me to get past it just using regular jumps. Furthermore, I guess you never knew also about Lara's small hop new ability. Doing the wind section in the Hall of Seasons it's a pain in the ass without it because you are supposed to use it. I have the PC version too, which got even more shafted than the ps2 one. I still remember the hilarious bugs. The cuts demanded by the publisher totally destroyed this game which at least had a good story. The next games after this simply can't be called Tomb Raider.

I wish they gave Core Design an extra year. It's sad they were overworked with releasing a game every year, with most of the team working on Chronicles which shouldn't have happened cause after Chronicles they had to scrap what the rest of the team made for Angel given a two-year deadline wasn't finish and still a year later it wasn't finished. If Core Design didn't make Chronicles Angel Of Darkness would have been a bit better with 4 years to make the game. I wish it was completed it would have been the best Tomb Raider game. Also am in the only one who thinks all the tomb Raider fans who a good at creating or fixing game should work together to fix Angel Of Darkness

Great video, love the TR series but have hated the re-boots... mostly - TR 2013 was close until they funked it up with Rise... AOD was an incomplete masterpiece! Got the last copy from GAME in June 2003 on the week of release - had to reserve it by phone and my dad took me up there to get the newest Lara adventure! The game was drastically cut down from the size it was meant to be.... Germany and Turkey were axed and the story suffered as a result. I do not have an issue with the controls, they changed Jump and Roll : deal with it! I was like 13 or something when I played AOD, sure the Jump and Roll swap was alittle weird but you get used to it. Or better yet read the manual before playing! Too ambitious and big for it's time sadly - there was some crazy shit planned for this game but it got cut after cut and eventually they released something more like that of a 'devs beta version' then a finished and polished game. Still I have finished the game many times, played through to the end and now when I re-play I know where every item is and all the strength upgrades. I enjoy the game for what it is, rarely die (GRRR Hall of Seasons!) and always enjoy myself. I re-play at least once a year, just for the memories. I also never got half those bugs reported from this game, maybe I've been lucky or super careful but it's always played fine. Some odd animations and death poses otherwise I never had any bugs. Maybe the 60HZ signal of the NTSC version caused issues? I'm a PAL gamer and we're supposed to be the ones who get the fudged versions of games... lol! One final thing: Strange Core didn't include the 480p mode for the PS2 version, still was a great looking title for an early PS2 game: the fire, water, fog and smoke effects are some of the prettiest on the console. The architecture was impressive too! Lara looked good but I wish the facial Expression thing Core bragged about had panned out better - they looked kinda iffy. I always liked Jonelle Elliot as Lara and would welcome her back!

Great review. The only thing I don't understand is why you were racing the flame in the fire room in the hall of seasons. All you have to do is stand still in the beginning, allow the flame to light the room on fire, and then progress. The fire room is honestly one of the easier rooms from the hall of seasons, but you made it incredibly difficult for yourself, much more than it needed to be. But that's my only pet-peeve. Hmm... that's so strange it didn't work for you. I'm pretty sure the developers wanted you watch the flame ignite the room. Especially the way the camera pans away when Lara first enters the room. Staying behind the flame while it passes forward to ignite the room never resulted in me catching on fire. I only caught on fire if I got in front of it. As long as I stayed behind it I was fine. But if you stayed at the entrance position, and still caught on fire, this game is WAY more buggy than I thought. I wonder if it's a difference in the PC vs PS2 version. I have the PS2. But I will say you have mad TR skills since you were able to beat the flame. That is some awesome platforming to be able do under time constraints in such a broken game. 😊

You can pay the door man of the graveyard (he is some were in the level a guy with brown skin and black hair he wares glasses but iam not sure if he does ware them), and you can get to the graveyard and after Bouchards hide out. Actually i think RISE OF TOMB RAIDER's Jacob character is meant to be a much better written version of Kurtis since it seems Reboot Lara's scenes have a interesting dynamic to them. Plus i never really cared for Kurtis at all and basically he was the most horrible idea to come out at the end of the old TOMB RAIDER series. The only Lara Croft "love interest" i liked and would enjoy seeing more is Samantha from the 2013 reboot game, at least she made sense in a way for Lara that the forced Kurtis stuff never did, heck even there scenes within comic book about the game seemed really painfully forced to the point where Lara shouldn't be thinking of even having a "love interest" at all. Which isn't sad for her really

@The Game Statistic I'd suggest not using the control fix thing you used, its why Lara does a 180 turn when you move backwards. (it was used in the PS2 version which apparently used a more similar to LAU movement style.) if you do decide to re-review it. I do think a good chunk of your complainst stand true. Such as Karel literally coming out of nowhere since Core didn't get around to making the cutscene where he actually introduces himself to Lara since Eidos wanted it out for Christmas. Or never getting the duals without cheating/using a program to use Debugging mode on PC.Though you did make a few mistakes, Pierre outright says he rang his ex in advance and during the Boaz boss (though this is only mentioned in the manual of the PC version since the PS2 version is apparently an even more buggy mess.) you can press roll to switch targets so Kurtis targets a pod and while that last crawlspace is too buggy for lara to crawl back out of, you can still use the front-crawlspace flip from Chronicles to get out.

I noticed that several explanations you give for needless difficult parts of the game are you making it that way. In TR3 you don't have to go down the chimney in Thames Wharf with the fire still on, and in this game, despite the massive props I give to you for actually doing that, you didn't have to get over Sanctuary of Flame's central oil pool before it ignites. I've tried that as a challenge and I could never do it, but presenting it as you HAVE to do that is exaggerating things. For some of your complaints, there are real solutions, and so the real problem is telegraphing. Otherwise, solid analysis.

Yeah the credits are exclusive to the ps2 version (like a free camera and blood effects) I somewhat like this game, generally its issues didn't effect me, and most of its issues is due to the publisher deadline, Its better than 2013 and a decent part of Rise Anyway, with exploration instead of "OH GOD EXPLOSIONS AND CRUMBLING" keys jingling, and the plot/Lara are nowhere near as obnoxious, seriously can we even say 2013 has a story? it literally avoids any attempt to actually depict Lara transforming into a bad ass, I never had the "Lara 360 turning when the camera changes" issue, at least on PC with keyboard controls without the control fix, and in my version of the bouchard limo cutscene the windows were tinted, Maybe its a graphics setting issue? I know the lowest texture quality makes a paper with a code unreadable at one point so its possibly that?

It's been 16 years since I played the PS2 version, but I seem to remember that you could unlock interviews with the development team in which they proudly congratulated themselves on their remarkable achievements with the Angel of Darkness. Hmm...like you (and everyone else) I blame Lara's piss-poor controls for the disaster the game became. It's such a shame, really. The graphics still look pretty good in places, and although the level design won't give you an erection, some of the environments look beautiful. And this is also my favorite look for Lara. She may look more realistic today, but here, she was just the right blend of pixelated pixie and cartoon lust object.

  • @reed2196

It was the best move back then to handle the franchise to Crystal Dynamics, it really helped Lara move into a new era and give up the clunky controls that never should have made it past 2000. The sacrifice though was that it took roughly 10 years after Angel of Darkness to reintroduce some of the RPG elements, albeit in a proper way.
