Tomb Raider Legend Review

I hope the order of the Nepal stage and lack of grapple mention makes the perfectionist inside of you mad, and don't get used to that upload speed.

It's weird because my first encounter with Tomb Raider were the classics & I love The Angel of Darkness in spite of all its flaws too *BUT* but Legend felt so refreshing and different at the time. I felt so excited about the future of Tomb Raider after I played the demo for the first time back in '06. I loved the new direction, the whole cinematic atmosphere the game had. The graphics were stunning and I still say to this day that Legend had one of the best soundtracks of any TR game period.

In the Nepal level, Lara's comment on how the snow leopards weren't there the last time is not really a nod to the Barkhang Monastery level, but a reference to the fact that she was trapped in that area with her mother when she was a child (in this game's story arc). You even find her childhood drawings at the end of the level. But anyway, great review.

That's definitely it, but the design coincidence and the fact Nepal and Tibet neighbor each other quite closely seems like some kinda vague Easter egg to me anyway. :/

yall core lara, lara from the LAU triology and the last version are completley different characters but with the same name, crystal dynamics wanted their own version of lara, all 3 of them have no connection whatsoever and neither are the stories, also their biographies are different too, i agree with that too that its just a easter-egg

@@b0ltun0 Legend Lara wasn't so much one to whine about the things that made her emotional as she was one to shove a gun in your face though. By the end of Lara's Shadow she's just so done with everything that she intentionally liberates her doppelganger from control under the full knowledge that it was very likely going to go back to its master and unleash a world of agonizing revenge on her (which it does). They managed to integrate these "humanizing" elements well with the essence of the character as we understood her before this point, so that's a victory in my book. Wiiiiish I could say the same for the other reboot.

I love long and in depth reviews of games. But most of the time these take really long to come out. I have no idea how you menaged to get the first 5 and the last 2 out with so little time in between, but it's impressive. For someone who calls himself Game Statistics, the review are pretty subjective most of the time. That's nothing bad though. I just prefer a more analytical view personally. The other thing that let's your reviews stand out is the humor you pack into it. This makes the video very enjoyable even for people who already know pretty much everything about Tomb Raider. It's a shame that channels like yours, who have somewhat consistent high quality output get so little attention. KZread prefers marketable, high quantity content. It's admirable that you still produce review of this magnitude dispite that. I wish you best of luck for your future videos and i hope your videos continue as strong as they already are! Since we have only 2 games left in the series, Anniversary and Underworld, do you have anything in mind for a new project after this one, or are you doing whatever comes to mind when Tomb Raider is done?

Hi, every Tomb Raider game of the first reboot is really really buggy if you dont enable the v-sync.... the problem is the option to enable is not ingame ... you need to use the launcher to enable it ... but after this there are normaly less bugs (like the grip bug). Chronicles has the best gameplay of those mentioned. Legend and Underworld have the Crystal Dynamics shallow "no substance, all spectacle" approach with no skill required & very little player agency (freedom basically). The world they created is just linear with unsatisfying wannabe Prince of Persia style platforming. And with all those games now having dated graphics, Legend and Underworld have aged far worse than Core Design's games for that reason.

Despite the more modern climbing controls and very action-focused gameplay, I really loved this game. Not only did it manage to retain the soul of Tomb Raider in a modern setting (significantly surpassing what AoD tried to do), but it gave us a new narrative that somehow managed to connect to the very first game by way of the Anniversay, Legend, Underworld Trilogy. Kinda reminds me of how Doom Eternal tied into the very first Doom game story also. As for the negatives, I think although there are a lot of unnecessary cuts to cinematics, the story weaves itself appropriately into the game's levels. The bike sections can go to hell, absolutely, the physics of it too. The QTE's however, there I cannot agree with you....They 100% exist as a way to fulfil the desire of all Tomb Raider players to murder Lara in the brutal ways possible. Why else would the game itself contain a fucking 'bails' video of a few of the fails? Crystal knew what they were doing XD

@b0ltun0 in my opinion the 2013 reboot should've been it's own game as a prequel, because the two sequels that followed don't have much in common. instead the survival timeline feels like two separate stories they tried to shoehorn into one whole series, but as far as im concern, Roth in the first game was the only parent father like figure to me than whoever her parents were. in Tomb Raider Chronicals for example and Last Revelation, Von Croy was kind of like the Roth in the classic timeline but a little different. i think what they should've did was, keep what you did in the 2013 reboot, but axe the whole im doing this because my father was right. because that's what they continued with, so instead of being the mom this time, they switched it to let's talk about dear old dad lol. what doesn't make sense to me though, is how they portrayed her father as a guy who didn't have much time for his own daughter. so how am i supposed to believe that Lara is doing all this because her father happened to be right about something, we didn't know much about Lara's original parents in the classic timeline, other than she was disowned by them. but even if they were into some research, Lara still made the decision herself to carve out her own path in life. in the reboot Roth was more like a father to her than her dad, but before Rise, by the end she became the dual welding pistol badass we remember from the classic timeline, and what we saw with Lara using two pistols, they should've carried that forward. that would be a great way to move the series forward in a direction, by introducing the classic Lara look to a modern generation. but unfortunately this is where Crystal messed up, they teamed up with Square, and that's why the series played out the way it did. i hope with the remasters coming soon, that maybe it could be a sign that some form of the classic look will return, but i won't hold my breath just yet. because the Lara that was added to COD as a dlc character doesn't count.

I never played this when it came out, I just recently tried it on the PS2 emulator. I've heard about how revolutionary it was, what a giant leap forward it was, etc. Honestly, I just find it extremely frustrating. While the camera in the original games could be annoying, at least it was predictable. The camera in this game seems to bounce around at random. I'm constantly having to stop and manually adjust it just to see where the hell I'm going and when you get in a tight space, you still can't see a damn thing, just like in the original games. Usually when you're on a ledge or narrow corridor and you want to pan the camera around and get a better look at an area, you can't. It refuses to move where you want it to for no apparent reason. The analog stick isn't really that precise so I often end up jumping at a slightly angle and missing the platform, when I meant to jump straight forward. I hate the in-level cutscenes and I fucking hate quicktime events. I'd like to castrate the son of bitch who thought that it would be a good idea to put those in games. It sucked in Laserdisc arcade games and it still sucks. While the graphics look nice, it's not al all apparent where you can go and where you can't. The game is full of areas that look like they should be climbable, but they're not. In the following game, Anniversary, I found my way to the gym in Croft Manor, but I'll be damned if I can't figure how to get anywhere. I climb up an obstacle and then there's nowhere to go. I jump off, fall to the floor and take damage. You're obviously supposed to be able to get to some of the higher platforms, but there's nothing to grab onto. At one point I jumped off, and it flashed the square button, but no matter how quickly I hit it, I just fell to the floor. The original games were predictable, but the Crystal Dynamics games seem to be based on luck. I suppose if this was the first Tomb Raider game I'd ever played, or the first third-person 3D game, I'd be impressed by it, but comparing it to the original games, I don't like the changes at all. It never really feels like I have true control over Lara.

I also got annoyed at the constant cutscenes showing you every new portion of the path that opens up, every single enemy you're going to encounter, etc. I found the combat awkward and I hated that he automatically puts away his sword at the end, like you're not smart enough to decide if you want to put it away on your own.

I actually liked Prince of Persia 3D, although I'll admit that it could have been better. I don't really like any of the games that came after those. Sands of Time, Two Thrones, etc. Because of the linear paths, the constant cutscenes, messages telling you what keys/buttons to press even with tutorial messages turned off, etc. I also found the combat itself annoying. All your moves feel drawn out. Like you initiate a swing and you have to wait for him to finish it before you can do anything else, even if you suddenly realize that the guy side of you is winding up for an attack. You're frantically pressing the button trying to do something, but your character hasn't finished his last move yet and you get hit.

Tomb Raider Legend stands as one of my favorite games in the series. The banter was consistently amusing, the tombs were beautiful, and the King Arthur stage was quite memorable. I loved the QOL and graphical improvements, but the game also felt less dangerous and thus less rewarding to explore than the first five games. Probably because it was too short and hand-holdy. I also disliked the QTE elements, and of course the constant banter robs the feeling of isolation and tension that the earlier TR games achieved so well. Crystal Dynamics got lucky with this title because it only got worse from here, from Anniversary's flippant reinvention straying too far from the original title, to Underworld's bugginess and irritatingly seamless world. AND it only got (even more) worse from there, with the reinvention of Lara now as a simpering crybaby of a woman, nowhere near as confident or competent as "classic" Lara, opting for an Uncharted ripoff rather than focusing on what set apart Tomb Raider from other series. While Chronicles was certainly not good, and Angel of Darkness was a total mess, both were the results of rushing a very skilled team on an impossible development schedule. In the end, seeing how things turned out, I believe it was a real mistake going with Crystal Dynamics over Core Designs.

"Amanda flashes back about how she couldn't save herself in the past." Is he acknowledging the skin? 😂😂 And also, I think the reason people like the motorcycle segments, and why certain people implement it into their games, is because it gives the sense of action, and makes the player feel as though they are in a movie, as opposed to just a mere distinguishable videogame. Even in movies, when they're riding a motorcycle, they're not using it just to simply explore and look around. They're usually using the source of transportation in most movies to catch up to and fight enemies, overcome obstacles, or run away from something that is chasing them, with two of the three giving them no option to turn back or "explore". So in my opinion, QTE, and this mechanic in the game are actually good. If...you're looking for a cinematic experience.

Legend is the best release, its highly enjoyable and graphics are perfect. Anniversary is not bad but its annoying at times, a failure imo. AOD is a very good concept but they failed at many things. Her ridiculous slow sprint is ruining the whole experience. i never finished AOD, i quit playing it because it was just awfully boring and annoying to play with a Lara that moves as if she has to take a big sh!t but holds on lol... the responsive movement of the classic games is what made the old classic games great. After The Last Revelation they turned Lara to some disabled b!tch, her flexibility disappeared. The classic games were much more realistic. You could move her as you wanted, the jump really felt as a real jump and you could almost jump and grab literally everywhere, you could even made a glitchy jump and get on places you normally could not get that easily. We had full control of her movement in the environment and were able to experiment with it and that is what made us all love the game. Core Design did a perfect job with that. in AOD they destroyed it but they brought back her original movement in their version of Anniversary...unfortunately they never finished the game because it was sold to another developer. Since then Tomb Raider games were getting worse and worse until in 2013 they murdered her and replaced her with some annoying b!tch who's is nothing like Lara. They even replaced her iconic Pistols with a ridiculous BOW, wtf. Lara died after The Last Revelation.

Don't need weapon upgrades like, at all. Being constantly overloaded with grenades, cancels out other weapons, especially the grenade launcher which, on hard is limited to 3 shells. Basically just have a linear path with set combat encounters where the player is most likely going to use pistol/rifle/gren. With limited weapon pick-up to discourage any mixing up, not that it's required. The original games rewarded exploration through ammo, additional weapons and health kits with level design and deprivation to accommodate it. Here? Walk in a line, weapons, ammo and health kids dropped like Christmas presents. One of the strongest aspects, akin to something like Doom, was that exploration was as critical to the gameplay as the combat. I'd argue more so. Legends almost wholly combat with 0 management with overuse of checkpoints to really remove any semblance of tension. If you die, just minor inconvenience, like, 5 feet away. The suits? Yes. That counts. Sure. But it's not vital or personally something I care about. The simple act of finding a shotgun or a medkit with a "aha" was as exciting as blasting a gun in the og games.

  • @TheGameStatistic

    @TheGameStatistic

    3 жыл бұрын

@@MrBoBoTom No you don't need upgrades. No tomb raider game requires that you have all the weapons You can beat the classics with just the pistols, and you only need the base guns here. Nothing has changed in this regard. The weapon drops and balancing could've likely used some tweaking. Yeah the legend is more linear comparitively. it takes until Kazakhstan for paths to even diverge. even then relative to the old dungeons they're not as sprawling. i wouldn't even call them dungeons. they're more room for room puzzles. solve a room. move to next. solve a room. carry on. Yeah the old games gave you ammo, health, and weapons. This one drops outfits, upgrades, and art. The rewards are just different to account for the design shift. Nothing is really "vital" they're just rewards. How much you care is up to the person. This prety much just a lite version of what came before. The puzzles don't spread out or demand more until the end. Even then relatively the bar is lower. The most challanging thing to do explroaton wise is getting all the secrets which requires the most comphrehension of your space. Legend is definiely more main stream friendly. The graphics dont allow for situations like in chronicles where you're supposed to decuded a painted vent texture can be hung from, or TR3 where you're suppsoed to deduce that you can just jump through certain textures. It saves often, i'd wager because the platforming is less in the players control and the game just wants to cut out the trip to attempt the platforms again. The last point is subjective. But yeah. Legend is def TR lite.

@@TheGameStatistic True, you can just use a pistol in the original Tomb Raiders, but you can do it in practically any game. Where Legends differs in how it approaches it. Which is to give the player the best weapon and full resources consistently to make anything granular non-existent. Part of the fun in games like Tomb Raider and Doom wasn't just the shooting but the exploration combined via resource. Extending the tools available. Legends is basically Rifle/grenade from the very first level. Not that Tomb Raider doesn't have OP weapons, but their is at least a semblance variety, deprivation the level working in tandem to reward players who take the initiative. Like, the costumes ultimately mean nothing to me, if the game is so shallow an nature, which the problems mentioned in your video, that I will have no intention of revisiting it again. I fail to see how, I can't stand the fact that Lara now needs parents as a story line and a drive to do what she does. In the originals the story that was found in the manual in the game box was that she found archeology a passion and turned to travel photography to fund it, her parents thought it too crass an occupation for a lady and cut her off. So in the originals she did things just for her and to do them, not to line up with any parents. And let's be honest here, who but a small percentage follows in their parents footsteps nowadays? Not many since upward social mobility was a concept first termed in the 50's.

@@Tismeabbie The thing is they needed to latch onto some element of Lara's past to expand on and give her a more sentimental motivation. Cause to be honest, while her original motivation was fine it could only take her so far. It took her through 6 games, after which the general population got bored of her cause she just did things to do them and ultimately became a blank tool with which for the player could do platforming and gunplay. Not that there's inherently something wrong with that as a game, but a protagonist like that can't even hope to retain a spot as a prominent video game character when nowadays game are flanked with all these dramatic stories that propel other characters beyond what Lara was. The only thing that would set her apart is a story of her own, and "parent" is the only word in her original bio that really had anything to expand on emotionally. Otherwise they'd have to make up other things like....add a love interest....or a child.....or friends.....or make her actually have serious mental issues to address. Pick your poison, cause otherwise the formula of Lara going on arbitrary adventures just cause she wants to, is best suited to mobile games and smaller $20-$30 titles.

You really didn't need to go on for quite so long about the same complaints. It gave me flashbacks to the worst of the Star Wars lore video community, where people feel inclined to make daily videos about anything they can possibly do a "video expose" on and then, upon realizing there isn't much to talk about, pad the video length out to seven or so minutes by saying the same thing multiple times in a row and in five or six different ways.

I tried playing last month because it was 0.97 euro on Steam. I didn't like the controls, personally. I am a not a ''gamer'' and I never found other 3d platformers interesting to get familiar with the controls they have, so that contributes to that. The controls of the old Tomb Raider games have flaws but you can play the game with just a keyboard. Legend seemed unplayable to me without a mouse to readjust the camera constantly because camera placement is in my opinion not smart. In certain cases the camera placement makes unclear what the 'correct direction' is. I think people who are used to readjusting the camera constantly do not understand how often they are doing that. Other than that the things that I disliked about the moveset were the lack of backflips and sideflips during platforming segments. The combat moves seem interesting on paper but it takes some time to master them and since I didn't like the game overall, I did not really, so to me Lara was not ''satisfying to control".

I was really upset back then. I didn't know any other Tomb Raider games and thought that I struck gold with this one but than I realized that Anniversary was the only good game Crystal Dynamics made.

Like a Hollywood movie? That’s more of a personal point of view rather than a review. Movies are shitty this days and make Barney fun. The Tomb Raider movies r lame too. Sure Angelina was cool but still
