Tom Kimber - Cittern, Tenor Guitar, Mandolin

Музыка

Another new tune titled 'Rumbling Kern' after a coastal landmark in Northumberland. Very loosely based on the Scandinavian Polska form and incorporates an end phrase that has been in my head for a while but haven’t been able to place where I’ve heard it before.
The Cittern now has a full compliment of strings after having been used as a 4-course Octave mandolin for a little while.

Beautifully conceived, beautifully played. I'm saving this as one in my collection of outstanding playing by mandolin artists.

@@tomkimbermusic Back for another listen. Man, this is really, really fine. One can talk about notes, styles, instruments. But ultimately - as this so beautifully demonstrates - real music is ineffable.

Very tasty indeed! The opening phrase is found in a Danish tune from the island of Fanø - a form of tune called a Sønderhoning. Love the full sound you get from the various instruments used!

  • @tomkimbermusic

Thanks, I went for A but would probably change to G depending on the tune and key. I tend to do that quite a lot on tenor guitar so still trying to find my favourite tuning on cittern.

@@tomkimbermusic Thanks for your answer. Yes, "choose a favourite tuning for cittern" is not so easy... I have seen that with your four course mandola (or tenor guitar) you had already chosen GDae, GDad, GDgd and GDgc. I remain very interested in your itinerary.
