The whole thesis of the video is that the difference here is how in-your-face it is and with how luxury and poverty in South Africa live across the street from each other, but in other countries (by design) people have kept it more separate so they can avoid facing it. @@Get.Lost.Travel I lived in Cape Town for a year during the apartheid era. I am a white American. Some fun facts from back then: (1) The local commuter trains were segregated by race, so different cars were set aside for whites and non-whites. Local buses, on the other hand, were integrated, so when I wanted to do something with my black Angolan friend, we took the bus together. (2) The University of Cape Town, which I attended, was required by law to be a white university. BUT...if you were non-white and wanted to pursue a field of study not offered in non-white universities, you were allowed to attend UCT. As a result, there was a higher proportion of non-white students at UCT when I was there than there was at my liberal university in the United States. (3) I encountered Marxist theory applied to academic subjects for the first time in my life while at UCT. I'm not suggesting apartheid was better than we think---just that there were some interesting anomolies in those days.

Well done. As a South African, we are burdened with that feeling for our whole life. Thank for not just being a tourist, but a conscious one. :)

Love this video! It really is a good and easy way to help at the right places if you tip low paid people like delivery drivers, Uber drivers, waiters etc. I see a lot of tourists giving money to people that harass them in an inappropriate way and it’s wrong to encourage that type of behaviour.

You're correct in your observations. The inequalities are just glaring. Can you believe that South Africans (Africans that is) from neighbouring province, the Eastern Cape who now live there, are called migrants in Cape Town while they are in their own country? It's a beautiful city, but has its issues, discrimination and poverty being some of them.

While on the subject of migrants, let me say that many Xhosa people in Gugulethu, Langa, Khayelitsha, Nyanga and other areas of CPT have been there for a long time -- this isn't something recent as you're purporting. Langa was est. in 1923 under the Urban Areas Act, formally opened in '27. Nyanga in '46. So this fallacy that B l a c k people living in CPT is only a recent phenomenon is a fallacy. Many were born and raised in CPT. Yes, there are those who have moved there in recent times, coming from other provinces within RSA, however wouldn't you say they have just as much right to exist as everyone else who lives there since they're South African?

​​​@@TheWildernessChannelI live in Gauteng and there are plenty of people from other provinces, including CPT/ WC who moved here for economic opportunities, yet you hardly will ever hear us telling them that they are migrants and should go back to their provinces as much as you do in CPT. Seems a lot of CPT residents call Black South Africans migrants with undertones of "they don't belong here, they are a burden, and are unwanted." That's at least the impression I usually get. Ironically, you have those from Russia, Serbia, UK, Holland, etc who migrated to CPT/ WC in recent times, but I never see the same treatment bestowed upon them. I wonder why? 🤔 Suddenly you want to make a distinction between the Khoi and Bantu as African groups and even claim that all Cape Malays are descendants of the Khoi -- a misconception since many have more Asian or even Euro DNA and less African (Khoi) DNA compared to say, the Xhosa. All this just so you can say they don't belong there, however those of Euro descent who are South African totally belong there, no questions asked. The a u d a c i t y! *All South Africans* should be comfortable living within RSA w/out self-appointed landlords and Historians policing them and telling them where they do belong and don't belong. This isn't the '50s.

@@_theerealnono_7694 Firstly, you need to learn to read and interpret ehat I said properly. You talked about discrimination and glaring wealth disparities in the Cape in your first comment. You are implying it is the whites, in that comment, so yes you did blame whites. Besides the whole thread of this video is about seeing the disparities in wealth as brought about by whitea and apartheid. That is the implication and don't try to deny it. Every foreigner who travels to South Africa brings this up. It is the elephant in the room and helps them to gain virtue signalling points. Secondly, I did not say that blacks were not allowed in Cape Town, I merely noted that the black population in Cape Town was always very low at 4%, and that since 1994 there has been a massive influx of bantu people into Cape Town, many of them being foreigners. It now stands at at around 40%, perhaps more. That is clear evidence that the Cape was not traditionally the home of the bantu. That is an historic fact. You can't deal with the fact that the bantu people colonised southern Africa by driving out the Khoi/San, who were the original inhabitants. Now you insult them by denying that the Cape coloureds are the descendents of the hottentot people. I will also say that I resent the fact that there are foreigners of all kinds (Europeans included) who have swooped in and taken advantage of the chaos that is ANC rule. I stand by my original statement, and wrote it to set things straight. I will willingly acknowledge the history of apartheid, but I am sick of hearing falsehoods being pedalled by the other side. The history needs to be even handed, or are you going to deny the Mfecane happened, or that the ANC murdered and tortured their own people in their bases outside of South, or the reprehensible practice of necklacing. The economic disparities in South Africa now fall squarely at the feet of the communist ANC who had 30 years to properly educate all out citizens, but chose instead to lower the standards and destroy our education system. Open discrimination against whites has only forced them to adapt and become more versatile in finding ways to survive. Their economic success is partly driven by the actions of the ANC who have added over 125 anti-white laws against white South Africans. Yet they have allowed organised Russian and Nigerian criminals into our country. Worse than that, they are working with George Soros, a man who believes in exterminating people. Focud your attention on the real enemies of our country. The white South Africans are not the problem.

As a tourist the same applies to every traveller: Respect the people and spend money, South Africa's Tourism potential is almost unmatched in the world. Inequality is all over and it's not tourists' responsibility to solve it. SA people need to solve SA problems. So go visit, have a blast, be aware of your surroundings, be safe and spend money like there's no tomorrow!

I'm trying! Sort of working on how to figure out my own personal connection to each place, I appreciate it!! And actually, there isn't one! The language in South Africa is primarily English, and it's the official language used on all signage, etc. The locals often speak Afrikaans as well, but you might as well be in London as far as language is concerned.

Its so weird😅. Iive 15 minutes away from Cape Town, I agree it's a total tourist playground. I actively avoide it, it can be overwhelming sometimes and very very pricey, so i just stick to the suburbs. The way I view it, is that its a place for the tourists to have fun and have a relatively safe space to enjoy their visit or holiday or whatever.

The dancing is back! 🥳 0:42 You should have joined them for the views. 😀 6:41 I did the same kind of boat tour when I was in Kauai last year and the scenery in South Africa is just as beautiful. 7:10 I felt the same way when I had horse meat in Iceland. 7:24 I never knew there are penguin in South Africa. Usually you would think of them being in cold places. 1:21 This is exactly how I imagined South Africa to be.

Thank YOU for watching! It is a really incredible city, I'm still thinking about it. At the moment I'm a full-time nomad! I have new home bases monthly, and then sometime do smaller trips away from my bases as well. For Instance, Cape Town was my base in April. But I'm from New York City! And before I was a "digital nomad" I was travelling out from NYC for all my videos.

Great video, and its awesome to see the bit of history you added. While I'm extremely greatful for this, being here for a whole month, it would've been nice to see a bit of the struggling coloured communities who have also suffered from the segregation. The coloured communities are a mixed race peopled (reaces such as Khoisan, white, black, Cape Malay), some coming from bloodlines of the Khoikhoi and San people who later joined and became the Khoisan people.

However, I do understand this it not a history specific channel, and the video is mainly concentrating on boosting the tourist attractions, whilst not forgetting there are still places of struggle wherever one goes.

One of Cape Town’s biggest resources is its tourist industry… the dancers, the security guards etc would not have employment if this industry suffered. The City has announced very big plans to take place over the next decade. I hope we just keep growing…

Thank you for a balanced and thoughtful video. The wealth disparity you saw... it is SO much worse in other parts of South Africa. It is, unfortunately, a fact of South African life. At least in Cape Town the tourism industry employs many people.. the side effect of that is that thousands of unemployed people from other, more hopeless, parts of the country flock to Cape Town in search of work! Hopefully, with our elections in a few days time, the people of South Africa will vote for change and then other cities can start to look like Cape Town. South Africa has the potential to become the finest country in the world.

They told us they were from out of town as part of their performance! So either 1) they're lying or more likely 2) they travel/commute in every day from out of town. Not sure why they would lie about that?

As an Eastern European living in SA for several decades, I can tell you one thing: I still can't understand the culture of a pretty aggressive culture of begging in the every traffic lite and wider. There are other countries in the world with bigger inequalities in Asia, America, China, and even in Europe, but begging is not "celebrated " in any way like in SA. It is a great pity for the country of such beauty, national wealth, and diversity. It lives bad taste in the mouth of the visitors. Black government in power did nothing to regulate it. In fact, it looks like they encourage it to make all Europeans feel guilty for the sins of small group of white elitists and racist. So, even if you are struggling, ordinary, modest Tom, Dick and Harry, you are forced to feel bad about baggers the moment you live the house door. Unlike Eastern Europeans who do appear grumpy, unfriendly, and depressed ( for valid reasons. Opresion and powerty have been running there for almost a century ), we would rather drop dead of hunger than disturb anyone or to ask for food, let alone for the money.

shouldve checked out a schoolboy rugby game on a Saturday while you were there, see the atmosphere

As a Capetonian, it's probably best to stick to the touristy/ wealthy places.

Cape town is the best. The food, peope, beauty, the choices... nothing compares. Unemployment is a huge issue in South Africa. One that has gotten too far from rectification, unfortunately. 8-10% of the population pay tax. Think about that for a second.

Thank you for the video. No one could have done better than you. Next time when you visit Cape Town again, tour our West Coast, where you can experience restaurants on the beach eating rock lobsters, snoel(fish), potjie food, boerewors, barbequed meat, homemade baked bread and homemade jam. Everything prepared with wooden fire's. It is a bush restaurant.

If come to Cape Town again, try to plan to visit our West Coast in August. Flower time West Coast and Namaqualand. Google Namaqualand flowers.

There is disparity all over the world, haves and have nots will always exist, your own country would be a great place to start being uber charitable.

😂 My internal conflict was at an all-time high. Sometimes it works out though, I tried Guinea Pig in Peru and it was really really not great. So I can feel OK looking at guinea pigs 😂

I am glad you enjoyed your stay in Cape Town. Yes we have a beautiful country that all races want to have grow and succeed. I just wish you and other youtubers, along with the rest of the media out there, would stop riding the "SA inequality" train. There are just as many rich whites in SA as there are rich blacks. There might be more middle class blacks than middle class whites and yes, there are a lot more poor blacks in SA than whites. What do you expect with the difference between total white and black population is 45,982,604? (50,486,856 b vs 4,504,252 w from 2022 Census)

For me it's not a "train", it was about the real-life effect of the inequality on my personal experience and how it's a very palpable thing. It's something you can really *feel*, and it is new and profound in a deep and meaningful way to those who aren't used to it. It blew me away, and that's what the video is about. Reading about it doesn't do it justice. It has nothing to do with big numbers or statistics. Of course there are many many years of politics and issues surrounding all of it, so I understand many people can't allow someone to just see something and talk about how it makes them feel without there being many many deep layers of history surrounding it, so I don't blame you for feeling the way you're feeling also.

Did you notice the similarity between SA n USA ? It seems wherever certain ppl go there is discrimination racism and dispossession.

Good video. I just want to comment on poverty. People very often look for the origin of poverty. The goto in South Africa is Apartheid but honesty by what measure is poverty being evaluated? If you think about it by most every measure this poverty was more prevalent before the word or deed of Apartheid was invented. Were the indigenous people poor or prosperous by the measures we are using before Apartheid came about ? One should rather look to the origins of prosperity. The white settles except for a tiny minority were very poor by modern metrics. What made the difference to those who prospered and those who didn't. There are things that make societies or sections of societies prosper. Look to those and then look at the areas devoid of prosperity and you wont find them there. Rule of law , respect for communal property , respect for education, willingness to point out wrondoing and report on it , discipline.......

As beautiful as it is; Capetonians aren't even honest about their city, it's actually embarrassing. The racism is incredibly rife and the poc just 'play their part". Other equally beautiful more representative places to visit in the country are; Hogsback (history in relation to The Hobbit if you're a fan), Mpumalanga, Drakensburg, Coffee Bay just to name a few.

Oh yeah, I mean this barely is even surface level. There are entire books written about the complexities of things like this. It's a video that should be watched through the lens of one visitor's observations (my own), and not taken as a socioeconomic thesis on a grand scale, that's for sure

The sad thing about Cape Town (and SA as a whole) is that the locals not only have to deal with significant wealth inequality but also high levels of colourism that exist there. People literally segregate themselves based on shade of their skin colour... which is insane!

Those performers are most probally getting minium wage doing the same dance 5 times a day.. Those similes are fake or grimaces of tiredness. They are forced to smile btw by their dance captains.

So many people have so much to say about these dancers, but the dancers told us their story themselves. Where they were from. What they were doing it for. So I'll tend to believe them and not some people on the internet making assumptions. And *of course* they're putting on the smile as part of the performance, that's how dancing works?

Ok, but income inequality is evident in all cities across the world. And apartheid ended 30 years ago. How long must pass before it becomes your problem?

To be fair he did not say that the income inequality of current day South Africa was due to apartheid. Most of the nouveau rich are not white anyway.

See if it is different in the rest of Africa. If not why not.

As some would want you to believe

You've barely seen anything, go to Khayelitsha or Gugulethu and you'll see the real Cape Town. People live in shacks built with corrugated zinc sheets, there are huge potholes on their roads, there is tons of water filled with shit running on their streets, no toilets or taps and barely any government assistance. All the money goes to maintaining the wealthy part of Cape Town - the Instagram friendly part. I live in one of the wealthiest areas in Cape Town and even I see it.

I saw bits and pieces! It's not something I would exploit in any way and show video of on this channel, but I did get a chance to see the areas a little bit.

Why not move to California? It's the natural result of your attitude. The Malays are originally from Malaysia and are not considered poor in South Africa. They produce as many doctors and lawyers etc as any other population group. The "beautiful" dancers are Bantus, recent arrivals from at least a thousand km to the East and North . I didn't see any Colored folk in this video, they are descended from the original nomadic people of the Cape.

I actually could never live in California, I've been many many times (I work in film) and it's much too spread out for me. Aside from perhaps San Francisco, but in that situation the cost is immense, even moreso than in NYC. And yeah, of course! This isn't a video about the different ethnic divisions of South Africa and where they all live and exist economically. This is merely about my personal experience and observations, and the clips you see are just of whomever happened to be near me at the moment when I hit "record". Though I do mention the San and the Khoekhoe tribes in the video as the original natives to the area, if you watched all the way through 🇿🇦

Sorry, you are wrong by saying they are forced to live there. Get your facts str8 American wise guy. They choose to live there. They squat there out of there own free will many years ago even before 1994. Today it has just progressed in official townships.
