Hi Martin Firstly Thankyou for providing the attached video which I found informative I am considering buying either a Vimarc VL240 or the VL300 I would be interested to know what your thoughts are My questions The VL240 has a 1.5Kw motor and the VL300 as a 2 Kw motor Does this make a difference Is having a pivoting headstock on the Vl240 a consideration and If you were buying a new Vicmarc toady which lathe would you choose

I'd love a moveable headstock, but I sacrificed that for the larger swing on the VL300. Plus, I have other lathes here (in our teaching facility) that gives me the moveable headstock and floor to ceiling capacity. But, if I didn't have those options, I would still go for the VL300 because of the swing capacity.

Could the Vicmark be converted to left handed turners. It looks like the head is identical on both sides

I'm left handed, too and it makes no difference to safe turning when using the lathe the normal way. The spindle on the outside of the headstock can be used for turning though, yes.

Well the issue there is that the headstock is not moveable. That said, one can use the safety collar, which comes as standard and in this video it can be seen attached to the hand wheel. If you use Vicmark chucks, then the safety collar will lock them from undoing when turning in reverse. A left handed person can then go to the back of the lathe and operate the lathe entirely in reverse, with only the knee switch unusable, plus, you will not be able to see the spindle speed as it is on the bottom of the headstock. Other than those two issues, you can operate it perfectly well from the other side. The tailstock and headstock are a machined fit; they are matched. If one looks at the tailstock there will be a number stamped onto it, that number should match the headstock/lathe number. It would be possible to use Vicmark chuck inserts in any other chuck, the Vicmark chuck inserts also have he groove for the safety collar. Part number V00975

As I turn a variety of sizes, they need to be heavy duty and top quality. As a professional turner, it is important too that my lathes are reliable and can cope with what I spin on them!
