TIU E1: Chucks Jaws and Faceplates

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this first episode of 'The Tools I Use and Why I Use Them', we'll be taking a look at the chuck systems that I use, and their jaws.
Take a look here at the SuperNova chuck and the Axminster SK114 chuck. There is a separate video for the vacuum chuck system that I use.
Remember that as a professional turner, there are tools that may not be necessary for beginners and that multiple chucks are really not a necessity for most turners!

Hi Adrian. Thanks for watching. Most turners don't need all those jaws and chucks....but it is nice to have these 'toys', isn't it?

Great video. Would you please comment on the issue of chuck size versus lathe size? I bought an SK114 only to find out that although I have a 1 1/4 in. spindle, the bearings and spindle itself will not support the SK114 and a somewhat large blank. This was very disappointing obviously. Living in New Mexico USA doesn't allow me to actually see most of the kit I purchase beforehand. That has led to several pieces that just get stuck in a drawer somewhere and forgotten, expensively.

Finally a video again!🥳 Edit: the big nova jaws are 130mm I think

Hi Elias Your absolutely correct, they are 130mm Jaws. I own 3 - SC4's and 2 - SC3's Record Power Chucks, which are very similar to Nova & Rikon, if not the same. It's a Sham Martin could not rely to you query!? As for button Jaws. Why!. A home made plywood disc with router matting does the same job. (No expense). and even Colwin Way has said that. Hopefully Martin's feed back would help. LOL

Very informative and helpful video. Lots of ideas to put on my birthday wish list! I've haven't tried using a worm screw yet; is there a 'rule of thumb' when drilling a hole to accept the worm screw i.e. the drill diameter being so many millimetres less than the worm screw itself?

  • @msabansmith

Thanks for watching. From memory, the drill for the worm screw is 8mm. Gives a good tight fit. Other worm screws need a different size bit, though.

Thanks for watching. I got the jaw holders from Axminster tools. Expensive for what they are, but solves a problem and saved me time making my own.
