Having a large lathe, I thought it time to stick a large piece on it for you. I wanted to create a single curve bowl (no foot on it) and a tray type base to sit it onto, with the base being able to be used as well as the counterpart bowl.
This video is an edit from a live stream presented on 25th June. You can watch the stream here: • 25th June: Watch Live ... .
The finished sycamore bowl and base is approx 18" x 4"
The piece was turned using a combination of 1/2" and 3/8" bowl gouges from Robert Sorby with a spindle gouge to trim the tenons.
For the rim, I used Black and Ruby from the Intrinsic Colour Collection whilst the base edges were done with Hampshire Sheen's Gloss Black Lacquer.
To finish the bowl, I used a few coats of the Hampshire Sheen Danish Finishing Oil.

The stand is a brilliant idea, and the bowl stands out superbly because of the simplicity - which helps to add to the beauty.

Martin just received my Vicmarc vl300 Friday from Ken Rude in Canada. What a well built and fine finished machine. I have a 2 1/2 car garage and it's all full of woodworking machinery so Space is at a premium. I couldn't afford Robust and was shaky about the Chinese brands. I Enjoy watching your videos so decided To take a look at Vicmarc. I am so glad that I did. Only a few of these lathes are in my area of the US, that I know of. Thank you for all the great videos and keep them Coming.❤👍

Really love the way it has turned out and when you were fading the colour inside the bowl I thought just oil would be better and we did agree on that. Something you taught me when I done a colouring masterclass with you on line .... sometimes less is more. I'm still experimenting with colours and getting more confident each time. Thanks for another lesson in turning and finishing.

Nicely done Martin. Personally I thought the feathered colour was good. Thanks for some video tips along the way, interesting to see how from the before and after which bits made it into the final cut. Cheers Geoff

Excellent demonstration on when a little is better than more. I'm getting better at embellishments but still need more experience when removing a color completely (seems to always surprise me with a few dark grain places), but each lesson gets a bit better. Now, can we get that Danish oil in Canada, soon? Can't find the big brands, lately and I want to try yours. :) Cheers, Martin!
