Titanic's Watch System Explained

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The bridge of Titanic, and other ocean liners, needed to be manned at all times during a transatlantic voyage. Titanic had 8 bridge officers, so who was on the bridge when and with whom? Find out in this video.
The Great Quick Move is a series of shorter videos on narrower topics than those discussed in the main Great Big Move video series.

I am a trainee deck officer and the times of each navigational watch are usually still the same today (excluding the dog watches that don’t exist anymore as far as I’ve heard even on the passenger ships) although the navigational watches are not named like they used to be. I work on cargo ships where there are fewer officers (about half as many) and sometimes that will require each officer to do 2x6 hour navigational watches in 24 hours instead of the usual 2x4 hour navigational watches in 24 hours. My favourite navigational watch is the 00:00 to 04:00 as the ship is quiet, the night sky is an awesome sight, the moonrise can be a sight to behold, and the moonlight is the watchkeeper’s best friend otherwise it’s just an inky black night outside. Going in and out of port is indeed when we really earn our money and it’s the most stressful. While I like to call the bridge my “office” the reality of being a trainee deck officer (and when I hopefully qualify as one) is that you spend a lot of time doing jobs besides navigating the ship, be that keeping a gangway watch, an anchor watch, overseeing cargo loading and discharging, helping cleaning out cargo holds/tanks, ship maintenance (the marine environment is very hostile to ships), looking after the ship’s lifesaving and firefighting equipment, being part of or leading one of at least two mooring teams, overseeing anchoring, and a lot of admin work. Most of the above still apply on the passenger ships too. The navigational watch itself is perhaps the romanticised part of the job that gets all the attention.

Another interesting topic for a video would be how they dealt with a ship's day being longer than 24 hours when westbound and shorter than 24 hours when eastbound.

@@misteramc1174 don't know for the great liners... on cargo ships and the like, you just go by ship time, that is, the sunrise time slowly shifts between ports, but then, these were based on multiple night and daytime watches.

The ships operate on one specific time zone, and just calculate their arrival and departure times to/from other ports. Personally, all the ships i have sailed on have used Eastern time, as they are based out of Quebec City. Currently in school to be a watchkeeping mate, and spent over half a year at sea total so far, I believe the system would have remained the same as back in the Ocean Liner days.

Can you make a video about how the officers rotated in the engine room and how that entire setup was with officers and lower ranks in engine and boiler department ?

I can remember sailing in the Eastern Mediterranean back in the 80's and passing a small freighter late at night. The lights on the ships bridge were all on and nobody could be seen at the helm!!!!😱

The dog watch in english (from dodge) is short to rotate the crews on the different watches over time. The dog watch can also be the night shift, used in norwegian and german, but also english. Apparently from the star Sirius, the dog star wich shows at night in northern seas.

Good video! But when is the captain on the watch, whatever he pleases? Is he part of the watch schedule during sailing in the open ocean at all?

Nowadays, on most bigger ships, captain is out of the watch schedule. He's on the bridge for difficult areas (port entrances/tight passages) and generally should be always available to be called by officers in case of any doubts. Sometimes the captains accompany younger, less experienced officers to supervise them during watches. Source: merchant sailor

At any given time titanics deck crew would be: 1 officer on watch = Wilde/Murdoch/Lightholler 2 junior officers=Boxhall&Moody / Pitman&Low 3 Quartermaster= 1 at the wheel/1 on standby these two will take turns at the wheel every 2 hours / 1 stationed at the docking bridge aka aft bridge. 2 look outs = titanic had 6 designated lookouts, ironically according to Lightholler having designated lookouts whose sole job was being a lookout was a white star line thing.
