QE2, I feel she was the last true ocean liner. QM2 is more a cruise ship on an ocean liner hull. QM2's interior layout is more like a cruise ship as is her decor, which although not as tacky as today's cruise ships, it still is a bit tacky. The QM2 could have been a great ship with a few alterations, but the designers missed the mark.

My wife and I looked at taking a trip aboard her a few years ago when she suffered a mini-stroke just before a scheduled European vacation. She was unable to fly because the reduced air pressure would have increased her chances of bursting a blood vessel. We also had some friends who did take the QM2 when they moved from America to the UK because they didn't want their dog to have to go through air travel in a cargo hold. Just a couple reasons why someone might want to travel by ship, rather than plane across the Atlantic.

This is a great video and explains why she looks like a ship not an ugly resort hotel stuck on a hull like most cruise ships. I finally noticed how high the superstructure is. I think this is because people want cabins with windows and balconies, not stuck in the hull with a porthole if they are lucky.

Decks 4, 5 and 6 are also balcony cabins within the hull with metal instead of the glass enclosure. For a winter crossing when it's not really feasible to be sitting outside these enclosures are ideal as the cabins are identical to the higher glass-fronted ones and a less expensive option.

I have 13 of my 16 Cunard voyages on QM2. There is nothing like her in the world. You have done an excellent job of describing her as an Ocean Liner rather than a "hotel barge" like cruise ships are. In 2006 Westbound to NYC, Commodore Warwick put her through her paces with a full speed exercise and a 360 degree circle. It was spectacular, in excess of 26 knots for the full distance. On a 2008 voyage around the UK, she did a 180 pirouette turn in her own length in the Mersey to back into the dock at the foot of the Cunard Building. The shore visitors in their cars created a cacophony of sound as they all honked their horns in admiration. It was amazing.

QM2 is an a. amazing ship I recently boarded it and it was beautiful . The cast, the crew, even the guess is just too kind in there. I boarded last February, and my boyfriend of 11 years propose to me in the theatre. It will forever be special in my heart ♥️♥️

I went on the QM2 in 2022 and had the time of my life! I recommend you do all 3 options you said at the end, too! The QM2 is a wonderful experience you will never forget, and you should definitely document everything, as I regret not taking as many photos as I did.

Oh my god, I'm so happy to see this after all this time. With no uploads or community posts or anything, I was genuinely worried something bad might have happened to you. I'm so happy to see you're okay. If you were to do a QM2 video, I would rather a review than a tour. I'd like to take a trip on her some day, and I don't want to "spoil it" if that makes sense.

Ive seen Queen Mary 2 a few times in Bergen, Norway. I was pretty suprised when it showed up for the first time

I would like to see the engineering spaces and behind the scenes in the Galley and auxiliary spaces off limits to normal travelers. Having served in the US Navy as an engineer 30 plus years ago, it would be interesting to see the advancements and how civilian verses military spaces are the same and oh so different.

We have been transatlantic on QM2 three times and love it. It’s a very different experience to cruise ships.

Definitely review the Cunard experience. It would be interesting to see your opinions on how it compares to the experience on older Cunard liners.

Great video. Besides all the technical aspects you named, there is one other thing that sets the QM2 apart from other vessels by virtue of her being a cruise liner. As you know, the Queen Mary crosses the Atlantic every week or so (unless she's on one of her occasional other voyages). And, as you know, when crossing the Atlantic, she's at sea for seven days with no ports of call. This means that passengers have nothing to do other than take part in the ship's onboard entertainment. Cunard certainly knows this is a challenge and they leverage the very best entertainment directors to scout out and book the very best entertainers who will be with the passengers for a full week at a time. It's absolutely brilliantly done, and at a level of excellence that regular cruise ships don't need to achieve.

My wife and I have made 3 crossings on the QM2, most recently in May of last year. Each of these voyages were unique and special in their own way. I would challenge you on your crossing to do 3 things. First, rise to the occasion and embrace the formality of the QM2. Second, enjoy the promenade deck. While you did not mention it in your video, it is the most amazing promenade deck of any ship in the world. Finally, meet as many fellow passengers as you can. They are a special group. Typically between 1/4 and 1/3 of the passengers on a crossing are commuters. This is how they choose to travel between the US and Europe and they do so on a regular bases. Can't wait to see the video you post of your journey. One thing I can promise you, the crossing is 8 days and 7 nights but on your last night at sea when you are packing for disembarkation the next morning your will say to yourself, "there wasn't enough time."

One thing about the gas turbines. From the perspective of engineering equipment on a large ship, the turbines are pretty light, especially compared to the diesel generators. That's why the designers realized they could put it up in the funnel assembly to get around the issue of supplying sufficient air.

I’m so excited for you. Hang g lived in NYC, I had the pleasure of watching ships sail out of the harbor often, getting to see some of the classics. I think one of the perspectives I would love is your impressions of the “Cunard formality” on board. I’m guessing you have cruised on cruise ships, so you have a point of comparison. I worked on QV, and relished in our “Downton Abbey” style of service and dress etiquette. No matter what video you decide, I know it will be great ABS you’ll have a wonderful time ❤

Before having access to the internet I use to think Cunard only have 1-2 ships QE2 and later QM2 which would succeed her. It wasn’t until the 2010s when I learn Cunard has three ships QM2, QV and QE which was christened recently and had all three rendezvous at New York. Now just waiting for a 4th ship with devised looks compared to her predecessors, though I do understand why Cunard would add capacity and reduce the strain on the three older ships.

You've not mentioned if you have had a chance to sail QM2 yet. I hope you get a chance. Prior to sailing on her, I lucked out a few times when I took the Staten Island Ferry home or to the city and passed her after she sailed from Brooklyn. It's an amazing sight. The best way to do it is determine the sailing time, pray there are no delays, and take the next couple of ferries after sail time. I prefer Manhattan to Staten Is direction because if she is late leaving Brooklyn, you might pass her on the way back. Also, I lived very close to Von Briesen Park, which is basically right under the Verrazzano Bridge. Watching from there a ship as tall as Queen Mary 2 just barely scooch under the highest roadway point on the bridge is really exciting.

Great video on the QM2, and I am very glad to see you posting again. Any and/or all of the above for your videos about your voyage! I would also enjoy getting some idea of the technical sides of the ship's interior design. To put it crudely, how iceberg resistant is this particular ocean liner?

As someone who lives in New York, I have seen the Queen Mary 2 docked numerous times at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in New York Harbor. Probably because it’s too large to fit at any of the piers along the Hudson River.

For her first few years of service she did dock on the West Side but I suspect that the river current and tides could be a problem for her size. Arriving on her once during that time, we witnessed what seemed a mighty tug-of-war between between a group of large tugboats and the river as she sought to make the ninety degree turn into her pier. We got really close to the corner of that pier but, happily, the tugs won in the end.

A full ship tour then review after the cruise would be awesome :) ❤

You will certainly enjoy your upcoming transatlantic crossing. It is a seven day journey which you will find very relaxing or if you choose find many interesting things to do. My wife and I have had four crossings (and other cruises on her )and have wished the crossings were longer. You will be spoiled by the service provided. We have encountered some bad storms but have had no trouble with the stability of the ship. When you return to New York get up early to see your arrival - it is quite an experience. Your videos are very interesting. Keep up the good work. All the best to you.

As I understand it the ship’s jet turbines are not heavy, they are aircraft engines and therefore light in the scheme of things and this is why they are able to be positioned just beneath the ship’s funnel, high up as opposed to low down, as their weight has negligible impact on the ship’s overall stability. You are right in saying positioning the jet turbines in the engine room would mean a myriad of air ducts to ensure they breathe properly, and this would consume a lot of valuable space.

I’d love to see any video you decide to make while visiting, can’t go wrong!

Interesting fact about the ships and their port of registry. I just did a sailing on Queen Elizabeth and she flew the British red ensign at the stern which would technically make her part of the British merchant fleet. There must be an understanding around the ships being registered in Hamilton and their retaining status under British maritime law of sorts, a marriage of convenience if you will, something Carnival PLC has also allowed because of the tradition and long history around Cunard. I too will travel on Queen Mary 2 on a transatlantic crossing soon so it will be interesting to compare the two Cunard vessels directly. I also knew many of the points you outlined, and the azipods that drive QM2 are certainly very capable helped along by her bow thrusters at the other end…

I was employed in QM 2 from 2007 until 2012 as electrician.The generators produces 11,000 volts, the 4 electrical pods run at 3,300 volts.her sailing full speed @ 32knots.

Glad to see you back, friend!! I like the IDEA of QM2, but since she's based on modern-ish (if 20 years old is considered modern) cruise ship design standards, I can't see her ever being considered a beauty. Given the lack of real demand for a transat liner, I tend to think they could have made her smaller, based perhaps on one of the more proportionate 1990s Carnival designs, or something stand-alone yet smaller and better balanced visually. The France, QE2, and United States from the latter days of classic ocean liner design had graceful looks and size. I know, I know... outside cabins, huge multideck concourses doubling as expensive shopping malls, 45 buffet restaurants to choose from... surely a better balance could have been struck. Ah well. We've got one working ocean liner, and that's better than none. Awesome video! Hope you're back for good! As for a video of your voyage, just go wild. Film exactly what you want to see, don't overthink it, and we will all be here to enjoy what you create.

When the world needed him most, he returned. Glad to see you back friend: life hasn't been the same without you. Hope your time off has been useful, relaxing, and enjoyable. Pretty much everything you just listed about QM2 I already knew. The only things I really didn't know, though, were that the black stripes on her forward superstructure were for disguise, and that you could actually enter the azipods from within. The former definitely looks beautiful on her though, and the latter does kind of make sense in hindsight and sounds awesome. I'm honestly surprised you never mentioned how much of her technical design is classified information. You're not the only one who hasn't seen her in person before let alone traveled on her. However, QM2 does stop by my home city relatively often; I just never had time to go see her. One of these days, for sure, and maybe even my first transatlantic crossing too (I've flown twice but I don't really count that). I hope to maybe see you on board when I do some day. Good luck, and once again, great to have you back. :)

I knew most of it as well, but I must admit I learned a few things while making this video. I've had a couple of chances to see her in Boston, but the timing hasn't worked out yet. I guess the first time I see her is likely to be when I go on my transatlantic crossing.

He’s BACKKKKKKK!

One of the most difficult ships to learn it’s layout . I have travelled for many nights on this ship and it is very confusing. The “Lido area” is one of the worst layouts I have ever experienced. Compensated by the pub and library and the fabulous suites which are incredible. I sat next to Stephen Payne, the designer, on one trip, while having dinner onboard. He had never designed a passenger ship before and perhaps more ominously, has never been asked to again.

Could you please document the boarding procedure, elevator use, and what the acoustics/vibrations are like.

Super interesting! Especially about the pod ladder. I would like to see in a video the experiences of what the food is like, the accommodations, the activities on board, and a general sense for how long the trip feels. Thanks.

Done crossings on the both QE2 back in 2001 and QM2. Great experience.

Most unusual is gas turbines. They actually based on aircraft engines, so they relatively lightweight: one LM2500+ turbo-generator module (QM2 has 2) weights around 21-23 tonnes, while one of 4 installed Wärtsilä 16V46C diesels weights around 230 t without generator. And turbines, locating high above waterline, in case of main engine room flooding, still can provide electricity (nowadays no one make completely separate and non-adjacent engine rooms like on SS United States). I still can't decide what to think about them, as aviation technology, that once crippled ocean-liner industry, now working on last ocean liner.

I'm going to New York in July! Beyond excited! :-)

Warning to all who are considering a transatlantic crossing. It is habit forming. We have now done 3 crossings, and have 2 more booked. Why would anybody subject themselves to overnight flights to Europe when you have this option. Arrive relaxed with zero jet lag. Just walk off the ship and enjoy your holiday.

The latter. Data dense videos on topic allow viewers to select their involvement level. Visual aids are very useful when discussing modern tech.

I remember seing it when still in construction in St Nazaire. That left quite the impression on 12y.o. me at the time.

It would be neat if somebody did multi week long vacation of Europe, starting with an Ocean Liner and ending with the ocean liner. You know, the old school way of doing a vacation in Europe but in the 2020s.

I sailed on her in May. It was so cold, windy and foggy out all the way to Southhamptom.

Re: 10 - All of the above! I'd suggest reaching out to Cunard, too. Who knows, you might be able to get an in-depth tour of some spaces normally off limits!

I’m American, never cruised Cunard, but would love the QE2. I’m a solo traveler, though, and I don’t like the idea of formal dress and there being so much ballroom dancing. I have a bad leg and can’t dance, so I don’t want to have to tell someone that over and over. Good explanation about why the decks are so high off the water and don’t have the open deck after the bow. Good idea to paint the black bands. And yes, every cruise ship I’ve been in has an observation lounge in the bow of the ship over the bridge. Didn’t know they didn’t have an engine room!

Thank you very much for this unique critique of RMS Queen Mary II! Fascinating! I'm planning on a Transatlantic voyage on her from Southampton to Brooklyn, NY, in 2024. If you're taking a voyage on Queen Mary II this year, then perhaps you can also pay $150 extra, for a tour of the ship's engineering section and the bridge as well? That's what I'm thinking of doing, 'cause I'm a sailor, and interested in the ship's operations.

I did a 'behind the scenes' tour on my second crossing in 2017. When it is offered, the tour is not advertised and sells out quickly. Check at the tours desk as early as possible - I understand if you are sailing in 'grills' the concierge can make inquiries for you. Due to insurance regulations the tour does not go below deck 1 and into the actual engineering spaces. You do visit the forecastle 'mooring deck', crew quarters, the 'Pig and Whistle' pub, wardroom, crew cafeteria, medical center, engineering main control, and several levels of the main galley serving the Britannia dining room [you go past but do not linger in deck 1 foot storage and prep area]. There was a longish break [with champagne and nibbles] in Britannia hosted by the ship's executive chef. Afterwards the group went to the bridge. Captain Phillpot and the chief engineer hosted there (with cautions not to bother the duty officer) . One 'secret' disclosed on the tour was that there was a dedicated room service galley on deck 10. A photographer accompanied the tour, and afterwards you receive several pictures - mine included shaking hands with the Captain on the bridge.

Nearly booked a holiday once where the first stage was the QE2 to New York, weekend stay in New York before Concord back to the UK. For such a short Holiday it was very expensive so the plans got shelved, I really regret it because as pricy as it was the real value was the experience that wouldn't be around forever.

I also plan a trip on the QM2 perhaps in August or after 2023. I would like to see what the library, gym and areas that men might like to go to. I'm also interested in if joging is allowed on the ship and what the pools are like

As a shareholder in Carnival and living near Southampton I went on a tour of QM2 when she arrived in Southampton for naming by HM The Queen.While the champagne was excellent and plentiful, I decided there and then that travel on her was for me a non-starter. She was simply too big and impersonal.

Definitely a walking tour of the ship.
