Top 10 Ugliest Cruise Ships

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Many people criticize cruise ships for being ugly. Even those who don't know much about ship design or how beautiful passengers ships were in the past can recognize a truly ugly ship when they see one. When compared to traditional ocean liners, most modern cruise ships are unattractive, but there are some which stand out in this regard. This is my list of the top 10 ugliest cruise ships.
This video is part of the GBM Vlog Series (#8).

It is hard being a cruise ship enjoyer when literally your favorite ship you've ever been on was put 9th place on this list But also I want to set a "challenge" you could call it. I want you to now make a list of, in your opinion, the best looking cruise ships. But here's the catch: You cannot use Cunard (more specifically the QM2), or any cruise ships that were once ocean liners but got converted.

So I took a look at some of the cruise ships we have around to figure out what I'd consider the best looking ones and holy crap that was a dire situation. Disney Dream class ships are the first one I found which I actually liked. Also liked MV Balmoral and MS Queen Victoria but after that I gave up because some of these were monstrously ugly. Last one belongs to Cunard, but there's no way that was ever an ocean liner and there are other units of that type in operation too under different banners (Vista-class)

I have cruised on the Caribbean Princess and I love the Skywalker Lounge. It's a great reading room during the day with a nice view. It definitely looks ugly from the outside though. The bridge wing supports are also unattractive, but the concept is what drew me to the Grand Princess for my first cruise (Alaska). I saw a photo of the platform with people on it and thought "I want to be there". Sadly, some Princess ships no longer allow passengers to access that space.

The other ships in the same class still have a Skywalker's; it's just not propped up on stilts at the very stern, it's tucked in behind the funnel. While that alone doesn't give those ships an elegant finish, it's certainly an improvement. And there's no real loss in terms of the views from inside the room. As to the viewing platform atop the bridge, yes, that has been lost on Princess' newer ships. What's really regrettable, though, is that the wrap-around promenade on the Grand Class of vessels is gone on the Royal Class ships. Why, I don't know. I was just on _Ruby Princess_ and people were out walking and/or sitting on the promemade every day and evening. On _Discovery Princess_ , passengers seemed to go out on the kind of... platforms on "Promenade" Deck just to smoke.

I would personally disagree with you on scarlet lady, I would say she’s one of the more graceful of the floating hotel variants, she has this modern and sleek look which mixed with her color pallet complements the whole aesthetic. Which other ships such as those from royal Caribbean (particularly the oasis class) don’t do as well, as they very much look blocky with their size and not to mention their color pallet doesn’t help much differentiate from a boring blocky hotel. Also I feel like scarlet lady does the whole bow superstructure thing better than other ships who have attempted it. But that’s just my opinion.

Hmm, interesting video. I would only disagree with your comment of AIDAnova’s livery that you consider outdated. The livery is more or less the same for *every* AIDAship ever since the first AIDA (the late AIDAcara). This is the brand‘s key image that sets every AIDAship apart from the (bland) competition. One of the best-known brands in its core market in Germany. Replacing the livery would be like changing MickeyD’s arches or Coke’s flowing lines because the look so roundish… A ship without the Kissing Mouth is no AIDAship. They’ve managed the trick that people don’t go on a cruise on ship X by cruise line Y. People go on an *AIDAcruise*. (“We’ll sail on AIDA”) The distinct ship is often less of a priority.

I don't know, I think MSC World Europa's design has alot of charm to it. I like the knife edge bow, I like the shaping on the top if the superstructure (even if it is only a facade) I like the superstructure going all the way to the tip of the bow, it makes it look modern and sleek like a fish. And even though the stern isn't the best, i like that they bothered with shaping it at all, compared to the gaping maw of the Oasis class' stern.

aw, i love the norwegian encore, i was just on it for an alaska cruise. i thought it looked odd when i first looked it up, but over time, and especially when i finally arrived in person, i actually quite like it. the part above the bridge was the thing i didn’t like before, but i don’t think it looks too bad now, and especially after going on and realizing it was the (amazing) observation lounge and buffet, i just couldn’t complain. also, the hull art is simple, but i still quite like it. it was by a spanish artist, i forgot his name, but i like how flowy it is and it is 100% better than it just being plain. in fact that’s one reason why norwegian is my favorite line, i absolutely love the hull art and how they commission in different artists to design them, with the getaway artwork being my favorite, and giving it another reason to be my favorite cruise ship of all time, that i’ve been on anyway

Something that I have noticed is that ships with these designs tend to look less imposing if the hull is not painted the same color as the superstructure. Case in point, the ships of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, which not only seem to be more visually dignified, but also lack a corporate naming convention, and I am thus able to take them more seriously. That's not to say that putting the company's name in that of its ships can't work, because the Union-Castle Line did just that. But the reason it worked for them was that the majority of them were named after actual castles, and their names would still sound really nice even without the "Castle" suffix, as opposed to, say, Princess Cruise Lines, where their names fall apart without the corporate part of their names. Not to mention that the similar names cause them to blur together for me. It may help with brand recognition, but almost no one is going to remember the names of the ships themselves.

Not a bad listing! I’d be hard-pressed to disagree with most of your selections. Going in the opposite direction, IMHO to this day nothing has ever topped the graceful lines, beautiful interiors and elegance of the ill-fated SS Normandie. If you agree (with the premise), I think viewers and followers of your excellent channel might find interest in a video discussing the relative safety of these floating behemoths. Because in my opinion (after listening to many experts, none of whom were employed by any cruise line, and were thus much freer to give their true thoughts and opinions. This includes well-known maritime architects, retired USCG officers, and former mariners, including former captains of the world’s largest cruise ships.) - all of these massive vessels share one thing in common: They are all catastrophes at sea waiting to happen. ALL cruise lines will make endless pronouncements that safety of passengers and crew is and always will be their No. 1 priority. Rubbish. As these ships grow ever larger, capable of accommodating 5,000+ passengers and 1,500 or more crew (on some of the largest), the risks of an incident or accident (especially one occurring during a scheduled “at sea” day) continue to escalate. I don’t believe for one second that a ship, out at sea and possibly sinking, will successfully launch all its lifeboats and rafts without enormous loss of life. These vessels are loaded with elderly passengers and children, who will be slower and more difficult to put in lifeboats, life rafts or transfer to another vessel. Look at the Costa Concordia disaster, which tragically took 32 souls. The main reason the horrific death toll wasn’t MUCH higher was because it capsized right next to land. These ginormous modern cruisers are nowhere near as safe as the public has been led to believe. Those experts I’ve read and listened to? Just some of the entirely possible and predictable disasters which will unfortunately occur to one of these vessels: 1. Fire on ship. With crews frequently speaking multiple languages, even with regular training and drills a fire could easily overwhelm a ship. And depending upon its location, rendering some or all lifeboats useless. 2. Ice. Still a potential ship killer even 121 years after Titanic and with the International Ice Patrol, modern radars and excellent meteorological data. 3. Storms. I have heard expert after expert explain that these modern cruisers are extremely top heavy and could easily be capsized or severely damaged in extreme weather. In fact, that’s already happened many times, most recently with a major line. Loss of all main power and propulsion. 4. Terrorism. The dirty little secret the industry doesn’t want to talk about, but every one of these modern cruise ships, loaded with Westerners, is a target for terrorists. It’s not just the cargo ships. A major accident at sea, with the vessel in risk of foundering would probably result in thousands of lives lost. All the lines also claim they abide by or obey all SOLAS Regulations or suggestions. Don’t believe it. Mixing a profit motive with millions of lives annually is a recipe for disaster. Fortunately, in the past ~20 years most incidents have been relatively minor. I think your viewers might appreciate a look at the real risks taken when booking a cruise and sailing on these fun, but potentially dangerous ships. (And I haven’t even touched on the subject of crime on board the cruisers, another dirty secret, but crime is rampant on so many of these vessels, with jurisdiction hazy. Everything from cabin rading to assault.). TY for today’s video.

Yes I agree with all that you have said too. I was a cruise ambassador for many years and was lucky enough to sail on some of the greats from the 60's. I quit cruising in 2010 when politics and cruise companies like Carnival started to change previously independent companies identity and pressed their own marketing plans. The whole atmosphere of cruising changed for the worst with many nasty traits creeping in. Younger cruise guests, passengers whatever they are called now, only know the current concepts and are none the wiser of better times. 5000 passengers is far too many panicking individuals to deal with that almost always do crazy things in an emergency situation. I have seen many idiots over the years who would almost certainly die in an emergency or indeed cause somebody else to lose their lives due to their own selfish behaviour. Indeed some passengers these days seem to have great difficulty with actually staying on board when the ship is at sea!! 🙄

@@johnnyhollis9977 : Thank you for your comments and your perspective. We would appear to agree on much. As a former employee of one of more lines, you have an insider’s perspective I lack. Although I am not a mariner or former employee of any cruise line, I am a lifelong amateur historian of just about everything shipping, ships and the industry. I think I would have very much enjoyed passage to or from America-Europe during the Golden Age(s) of transatlantic travel. Sailing on the Ile de France, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, or any of those storied ships must have been a memorable series of days. Back when an ocean liner was the only method of passage from NYC to European destinations. I have only been on one cruise, a small, coastal ship with limited passengers but wonderful food. But there is one trip I can only hope to take whilst still young enough to enjoy: The fabled transatlantic crossing, NYC to Southampton or London aboard the Cunard QM2. And ONLY the QM2, although her Sisters are beautiful. Cunard, as you undoubtedly know, is owned by Carnival Cruise Lines (Which I think of as DisneyWorld on pontoons); a sad fact IMO. Cunard (and Carnival) claim that the Cunarders are sailed independently, without the heavy hand of the corporate parent. I have also read that with the QM2, the ship has a British milieu. An inside stateroom can be booked for a relatively low cost, and provided one doesn’t go overboard (figuratively 😂😂) with the booze, a $900 ticket does not become a $3,500 ticket. Perhaps with your background you might offer some suggestions or insight. There is literally no ship on Earth, including her Sisters, comparable to the QM2.

Ships I've sailed: Carnival Sunshine/Sunrise are pretty daft on the inside too. Feels like a maze. Norwegian Encore is the greatest hits of the Breakaway class, she's nice but Escape is the best iteration. Norwegian Epic does feel like the designers had never designed a cruise ship before. Half the amenities feel like after thoughts they squeezed in where ever there was space. Way disagree on the Lady Ships. They _are_ floating resorts so deck + superstructure is great for the pax. The forward-facing stateroom are great too. Norwegian Prima (preema) if form to fit function. Her onboard experience is fantastic, and she's designed around that. Ships I will sail: Caribbean Princess soon, specifically for the Skywalker Lounge. :) MSC World Class look weirdly smooth. Happy Cruising!

Disney Magic and Disney Wonder were among the last to be designed with aesthetics in mind, but you'd have to go back to P&O's Aurora and Oriana (and the early 90s Carnival ships) to find ones that look nicely proportioned and not like apartment blocks on an alarmingly low freeboard hull. There's QM2 of course, but even she was spoiled with that stubby funnel

I really miss it on the Royal class. I'm booking Alaska on Caribbean in 2025 for that reason alone. My God those Norwegian ships are ugly.
