Tip for Hospice Nurses: I am frequently asked how I determine when to make an after-hours visit vs handling the issue over the phone. My rule has always been to make a visit on all calls, except things like med refills or requests to change a visit day, etc. I will make a visit even for situations that I know I could easily walk the Cg through over the phone. The reason is because many after-hours calls are for the Cg’s peace of mind. They need to know that we will be there when they need us - so if we consistently show up for the little things, they can have comfort knowing we will be there for the big things. When the Cg is calm, the environment is peaceful and the pt more relaxed.
