An elderly man living on a sidewalk in Liliha. It’s a case that’s disturbed the community and highlighted a growing dilemma: How to care for homeless kupuna.

    Here in Los Angeles, there are a lot of homeless shelter rooms available that are vacant, YES VACANT. Even some homeless people don't want to stay in them. These were built at a cost of tens of millions of dollars and yet voters here just passed Prop 1 that will tax us even more for the next 30 YEARS PLUS INTEREST TO DEAL WITH HOMELESS AND DRUG ABUSERS. There is no definitive "one size fits all" answer, unfortunate, but true.

They have to take some responsibility for their actions. I am not saying that it is the case for others, but people just can;t live the way they want and expect others to take care of them.

    This is so sad. As we/people make comments from the comfort of our homes. You know them personally? Did anyone try to help them years/decades ago or direct them to social services or drive them or support them to get help and deal with the problems like what causes them to make these choices?... Did they try to get help, did they have a support system to help them get the help they needed? While the State focuses on boosting tourism our most vulnerable people fall through the cracks of the broken government system. Every day we read about corruption/embezzlement from reps voted into State/County/Federal positions. I guess what i am trying to say, is there is more to this story then just blaming State or homeless kūpuna. 😔

    Very practical. These tiny homes for hospital transients (which they have now) are foolish. Warehousing them sounds awful but it beats being out in the sun, wind and rain. They can even partition inside into private lockable units and in fact, I think they tried this but the “residents” refused to abide by the 9:00 curfew and no drugs policies. You can draw a horse to water…

  • @mermaidofaloha
    @mermaidofaloha21 күн бұрын

    I live on Kauai, I'm 61 with heart problems & I was recently homeless for two years. During that time I saw twenty people die on the streets. Kauai has nothing, no shelter space (one shelter with 18 beds & 3 family rooms & max. occupancy of 19 with a two year waiting list, over 300 homeless people on Kauai at annual homeless counts, so truly there are a lot more who don't get counted) no transitional or affordable housing options not even safe haven land to park or sleep at. In two years I never had one night shelter or any hot water, toilet or shower and I was on every list Kauai offers (KEO, Family Life Center, Catholic Charities & many more). It is disgraceful how America throws out their older, disabled citizens, like worthless garbage, after giving our whole life to work for this country and our community. Hawaii is the only state in the country that has counties seperated by ocean. I cannot go to another county that may have shelter space or resources for homeless people. On Kauai, our mayor & other politicians, take lots of vacations, get pay raises & talk for years about plans to help the homeless crisis on Kauai, but nothing is ever done. Just empty, meaningless words with no action while they turn a blind eye to homeless encampments they drive by every day. And they tell lies about homeless people put into housing, that when I asked details & numbers revealed the untruths of Felicia Cowden's words. A bathroom at Kapaa Lihi was closed & water shut off over five years ago. No access to toilet or running water for a mile. And that affects everyone, visitors, homeless, kupuna and all people on Kauai. To take away access to running water and toilets is inhumane. Everyone deserves to have basic amenities like water. I saw a woman, about 70, a visitor, step out of the nasty port a potty behind neighborhood center in Kapaa, shaking her hands in front of her and looking around for a sink (but there isn't one). The image of her is burned in my mind. I apologized on behalf of Kauai that as she and her husband walked down the scenic bike path the only bathroom facility is stinky, has no toilet paper and no running water. Door on port a potty does not stay shut so her husband held it closed for her. Disgusting, disgraceful, inhumane and unacceptable how Kauai has become an island for millionaires and everyone else is thrown out like trash. Children, babies, old people & veterans are homeless on Kauai for years. Please shine a spotlight on Kauai and bring media attention to the lack of any shelter or basic amenities for homeless people on Kauai.

    Because hospitals and insurance (yours and mine) cannot continue paying over $1,000.00 a day to house them. Keeping homeless elderly in the hospital’s care isn’t what our insurance wasn’t designed for and we’ve paid for it since we were all working, since the age of 15. It’s not the hospital’s fault. There are lots of abandoned but suitable living spaces all throughout our islands. The State has to pick up the shortfall, not private citizens who have our own Ohana to care for.

    The Core program should read some of these practical comments that residents have wisely suggested. It would cost much less to warehouse these transient or homeless but from some of these testimonies and that elderly man on the street, they are crying out for private medical and home care and they want it for free. The elderly cried for “SOMEONE TO TAKE CARE OF MEEEE!” Listen with wisdom, not with your emotions. Many homeless have and will spend every social service dollar on continued alcohol, drugs and gambling if allowed. Take any SS money they have, put them into warehoused housing without a choice. They either keep the rules of residency, or they can be put back out where they came from. They make the choice. Housing with rules, or not. All of us who have houses have followed the same rules. Lead a sparse disciplined life, or abandonment on the street. We owe them our humanity and we deserve the same in return.

    Why does this surprise? My brother lives in Hawaii and he stumbled upon a homeless man with an open wound. He tried to help get him food and water and assisted him in caring for his wound. It is what Jesus taught to help those who are more unfortunate and help the sick old and young. 🤷🏼‍♀️

    SO sad the state of affairs with the homeless issue. I dont understand how the sleeping giant(the Christians) can even go to church on Sunday and live the lie. They are the most cruel with opinions of homelessness, just listen to and GOP politician in the state. If it doesn't benefit the wealthy, it doesnt happen.

Aloha is too expensive for people who can't work really hard. Always was, never was a socialist place you could rest. It's conservative. For conservatives.

    There are three main categories into which homeless people fall: Those who are homeless due to mental illness or alcohol/drug addiction; Those who are homeless due to unforeseen economic circumstances, and; those who choose life on the streets, to avoid life responsibilities of housing, job, bills, etc. There are empty commercial and industrial buildings all over, which can be retrofitted with micro apartments or dormitory style housing. The mentally ill or substance-addled can be housed in dormitory settings, where containment and control should be the objectives. The buildings with micro apartments can be availed to people looking for affordable housing options so that low or no skill jobs 40 hours a week, will still allow them to afford to put a roof over their head and food in their stomachs. Those who choose to be on the streets can then be subject to laws which compel them to take responsibility for self-sufficiency.

    @@kikiD32 No, but in the not too distant future, there will be a different kind of housing project - one way in, one way out, armed guard gates, prisons close by, where the lowest class minority element will be displaced to, so that the cities they've ruined can be regentrified and made safe again for upscale white people to live in again.
