I think this was based on a true story. I don't remember the players, but the story was that on a par 3 somewhere, there was a huge wind blowing from the hole to the tee. Everyone was having their ball blow back to them after they teed off until someone came up and drew his putter. Instead of lofting it in the wind, he putted it down the cart path and it proceeded to roll down the path and onto the green. He got off with a birdie. I wish I could remember the details...
@dominantdaddy6939

I don’t recall all of the details as to who exactly was involved, but the way I recall the story that inspires this scene was the first guy hit the ball, and the second guy took a ride to Antarctica and drove it on ice and it literally went a mile. I’ve always thought the story was one of those cool old wives tales you wish was true in a dick measuring contest that went overboard.

I also remember a scene for the short lived ESPN series "Playmakers," where they did something similar to this scene in which a hot shot QB with a great arm got into a confrontation with his West Coast Offensive Coordinator who was a prick and sucked as a player. The two showed who can throw and land the ball the farthest, QB went first and threw it far, long and hard, and OC threw into the back of a moving golf cart past the other football, showing that strength is good but smart was better.

I don’t recall all of the details as to who exactly was involved, but the way I recall the story that inspires this scene was the first guy hit the ball, and the second guy took a ride to Antarctica and drove it on ice and it literally went a mile. Just a observation. In Bull Durham, Crash had the Brains, but lacked the god given talent to play in the Majors. In Tin Cup, ol Roy had the god given talent to play golf professionally, but lacked eather the brains, or the discipline. Funny how that works...
Gotta give Sims credit here he totally outsmarted Roy.
I had a friend do pretty much the same thing in Denver, he bet a guy he could hit a golf ball 800 yards. He took him out to Cherry Creek Reservior, which was frozen as it was March, and hit the ball almost all the way across it, well over 800 yards.

He did it to teach Roy a lesson about playing smart.
What a great movie
Moral of this scene. You better make damn sure all the parameters of a bet are set before engaging in it. Especially when money is involved.

And now I need to go watch this movie.
Funny this popped up on my feed. Fun movie. Always cracked me up, a 227 yard 7 iron that he toed a bit. Lol
you gonna lay up the way you did in the masters last year?
David was smarmy but he was actually very good to Roy in some ways. I don't think I would have given him back the car that easily. I would have driven past him every day for the next week.
Fun fact: Don was first choice to play Eliot Ness in the Untouchables. He passed as he’d just played one of the most iconic cops in entertainment history in Miami Vice. Kevin took the role and the rest is history…For the record, I think DJ is possibly the only actor of that era that could of played the Ness role as well as, if not better than Costner. Maybe Harrison Ford as well….
The best part of this scene was cut because the clip was taken from television. As they're watching the ball bounce down the road "earl", on of Roy's friends says off camera, "Sh@t, he hit down the fu*ckn' road, didn't he?" God I love this movie. I actually get bummed when the end credits role. They should have made a second one.
