Greatest Golf Collapses and Chokes of All Time (Part 2)

Спорт

Golf entails an extreme level of mental challenges that must be overcome in order to succeed at the highest level. Unlike team sports, golfers do not have teammates to bail them out if they don't perform; it's all on them. One mistake can lead to a compound of errors that can be difficult to defeat, and even just one miscue can cost a player a championship.
However, some of the players in this video found redemption. I.K. Kim won the Women’s British Open in 2017. Kyle Stanley staged an 8 shot comeback the following week to win his first PGA Tour event at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Retief Goosen won the 2001 U.S. Open the following day in an 18 hole Monday playoff over Mark Brooks. Even with Mark Calcavecchia's collapse, the U.S. was able to hold on to win the Ryder Cup 14.5 to 13.5. Tom Watson would go on to win 8 major championships after his collapse. Ben Hogan would go on to win 9 majors after his choke at The Masters. Patty Sheehan won 4 majors after her 1990 collapse, including two U.S. Open victories. She was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1993. Lorena Ochoa won two majors after her collapse, and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2017. Thanks for watching, I hope you enjoy the video.
Jean van de Velde, Greg Norman, and other collapses are in Part 1.

    “THE MASTERS: Greatest Shots and Moments" and my Tiger Woods Comeback video were both taken down from KZread last week, and my channel got hit with two copyright strikes. Because of this, I won't be able to re-upload them here without risk of having my channel terminated. Instead, I have uploaded the videos to Vimeo so that anyone who wants to watch them can view them over there. Thanks for the support! I can relate to how tough this is, I've been there ! I was playing in a close one years ago, leading by one stroke, going into the par 3, 18th. Off the tee, I hit the dinosaur's foot, then the windmill blade on the second shot. It would take five putts, before that blue ball finally dropped in the cup. My wife won by a stroke and it would be months, before I could muster the courage to play Adventure Golf again. I never fully recovered.

    All of these moments make the things that Tiger does down the stretch in tournaments to win over his career even more impressive. People just really don't understand the kind of pressure that is associated with those short putts on the last hole of tournaments and majors. Tiger poured them in like they were tap ins. The 12 ft. putt Tiger made to get into that playoff with Rocco in the 2008 US Open is one of the best putts ever made. Unreal...

I picked him as an outright winner the next week and we won big. He has 2 career victories. I know Tom Watson was wondering where that Stuart Cink was in his last Open run. When I was 18 in 1972, and about a 7-handicap, I started a round of golf having birdied 3 of the first 4 holes. Had a 6-footer on #6 to go to 4 under. Rammed it by and missed the 4-footer coming back. I started thinking about my score and everything fell apart. I had 5 birdies that day and shot 9 over par for 18. I returned to the same course some 30 years later, playing a round with my brother-in-law, and told him about my collapse in 1972 as we were walking down the 1st fairway. Crazy thing was I again birdied 3 of the first 4 holes. This time however I ended up shooting 1-over for 18 holes, so I wasn't too disappointed. If you play golf long enough, you're going to choke sometimes just playing casual golf with nothing on the line. I have a lot of compassion for the pros who collapse and miss out on wins that could be life changing.

    Lot of people thinking this depressing. This is beautiful. No, we arent laughing at these players, or hold them in our minds as talentless hacks, we still revere them as greats, but recognize the humanity in triumph and failure. These may be some of their darkest moments as individuals, but there is beauty and light in uniting us as humans with compassion and empathy.

    Goalby's reaction says it all. A true athlete: he wanted to win with his clubs, not by some pencil mistake. It was a stupid rule to enforce under the circumstances since countless people had actually seen him make the 3. What puzzles me about the rule and the decision is this: what if he'd actually scored a 4 on the hole, but Aaron had written 3, and De Vicenczo had signed for that. Surely THAT score wouldn't stand. No, they'd intervene and disqualify him because he'd actually scored 4. But that contradicts the idea that you can't retroactively adjust the scorecard to comport with the actual facts. Stupid, stupid rule.

  • @golffocus

    @golffocus

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey Thomas, yeah both Holmes and Wie are in the discussion, but I didn’t include them for a few reasons. Though JB was in 3rd to start the day, he was 6 shots back. Barring an incredible round, it would have been very difficult for him to win, which is why I did not include him. You are right though, an 87 is certainly a terrible round. I didn’t include Michelle Wie because she was just a 15 year-old amateur at the time. You’re right, both are bad collapses, I just chose not to include them in this video because of the circumstances and because I didn’t want to make the video too long, so I had to make some cuts. Rocco is an interesting one. He was tied for the lead at -4 after he made the turn, but if I’m not mistaken, by the time he got to the 12th tee he was 3 back of the lead thanks to a bogey on 11 and back-to-back birdies from Mickelson on 7 and 8. However, you could definitely make a case for this one given he was tied for the lead with just 9 holes to play.

    First attempt at passing my PAT for the PGA I had six shots to give with nine holes to play. Missed a birdie putt on 18 for a 43 and missed by one. 4 hr drive back home after that collapse really gets to you. 2 months later on my second attempt I took a 9 on the third hole of the day and reflected on my first failed attempt. I thought I was going fail again but knew there was a lot of golf left. Said not this time. and played even par the rest of the day. Golf is a mental game. If you think about failing you will.
