I remember an interview with Jesper Parnevik from a Swedish golf magazine in 1997 where he talked about playing with Tiger on Sunday of this tournament. Nobody had reached the 18th at Pebble Beach in two all week because of the bad conditions. Until Tiger on Sunday. Tiger's second shot on 18 @5:55 was a 3-wood from 265 yards. Might not sound like much today, but in 1997 with the technology of that time - x-stiff steel shaft and a wound ball - plus damp chilly conditions, slightly into the wind, and at sea-level, it was almost supernatural to carry a 3-wood all the way up on the green from there. Jesper said that "even if I got to hit a driver with the ball teed up 25 yards further ahead it still wouldn't even cross my mind to try to go for the green". He said it was the most surreal experience he's ever had on a golf course to witness that shot in person.

You might recall that the iconic Tin Cup climactic scene involved Kevin Costner going for a par-5 with a 3-wood from even closer than that 265 yards. Suffice to say, even fictional characters weren’t that ambitious in the 90s.

Costner was a member of Lakeside Golf Club in Toluca Lake. As a caddy in the 90's he always tipped really good, friendly and was a good player, Stalone was the polar opposite.

I have a friend who is a terrible degenerate gambler. And he has a lot of money. Bad combination huh. Well in 2000 - over the span of 4 tourneys, he lost $120k because he bet the entire field vs Tiger and Tiger won every single one of the tourneys he bet on. Lol. It was 3 majors and another event that was right after one of the majors, I forget what now, its been a long time. But yea, he lost that much betting AGAINST Tiger. Lol. I still bring it up to him every now and then.
Tiger’s swing here is just amazing. Seemingly few to no swing thoughts whatsoever just making it look so easy. The game was coming so natural to him here. You can tell he just felt “it”. Perfect tempo without even trying.

Best iron striker in the history of the game imo, especially from the rough or sand. If he didn't have to re-model his swing due to injuries, surgeries etc he would definitely have 20+ majors. And he's still the GOAT regardless, with no disrespect to Jack.
How cool can a golf duo get ? THIS cool.
There was nothing better than watching Tiger in his prime.

How about the plaid cardigan on Kevin Costner? Pure class.
So he just BARELY makes the cut and then still breaks the all-time 72 hole scoring record (for five minutes)? Man oh man, he is special. And of course the guy he loses to is his best friend... and possibly the greatest Pebble Beach player of all time.
I'll never forget marvelling at how hard he'd swing the club and flush it every time. As a big hitter myself back in the day, i could really appreciate his courage and admire his self belief to be go that hard every time. Most of us are too scared to swing as hard as we can because its too hard to control.
That shirt and pants on Kevin Costner is the 1997est outfit I've ever seen...

Watching this, reminds me of how we used to take this man’s game for granted.
What do you think his best shot was? Was it the 7 on 5 from the rough or the 7 out of the sand on 12? Or was it the put on 17 with...the 7 as well.

Can someone explain how pro-am 2man teams work? Its not scramble as i see they putting each its own shot, is it the average score or just better score (at any hole counts)?
Tiger Woods and Kevin Costner, two of the biggest stars of the time playing in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Now you have tour players going to Saudi Arabia to play for blood money. I'm so very saddened at the state of the game these days.

I think it's good that the pga is getting the competition. It will force them to step up. As far as the blood money aspect I'm not buying into that narrative. NBC can condemn that but defend China when people are enslaved as we speak and genocide is taking place. They're athletes making a living looking out for themselves not politicians
Costner really took Woods to the train station

Amazing. The guy has a video of his highlights and did not even win. What about Mark O'Meara highlights?
Tiger, completely unsatisfied look after the last putt with 2nd place. It’s just who he was in the beginning and for many years after. At 47 and all of the injuries I’m not sure it’s the same. I’m sure he still wants to win, but it may not be taken for granted.
I wish I could find that sweater Costner is wearing.
