I have been homeschooled and public schooled. It is very true that people criticize you for socialization, but also true that you can't socialize at public school either!

Actually, the thing is “we don’t want our kids being socialized like they are being in public school” - being told to do any type of sexual activity you want at any time., etc.

For everyone saying home-school is bad: I was home-schooled up until sophomore year and decided to go to public school, but it was extremely easy. I was shocked at how dumb everyone acted, and how childish everyone was. I was also bored with how easy the work was, and I knew everything. I finished that year top of the class and got many awards, and was a favorite of all the teachers and kids; but I was also feeling bad for every kid in the building that was struggling to even get C’s or B’s..when that work is so easy and not demanding at all. Plus, they only socialize with other kids their age because all their life they’ve only socialized with kids in a class room for 8 hours a day. Never making relationships with anyone else. Never learning how to make relationships with adults. All they did was play on their phones, and avoid conversations that actually had purpose. I went back to home-school the next year, and I’m now a senior as well as taking freshmen college courses. I’m so glad I was home-schooled and had a chance to be myself, never dealing with pee pressure, or people judging me. I made REAL friendships, not just friends with the kids I was forced into a class with as a 6 year-old. I also have had more time to volunteer at nursing homes and animal shelters, which is always great. I’m a good athlete, have been on a swim team since 9 years old, and I went to state champs. I’m also a musician, and can play 10 different instruments, write songs, and much more. I’m in a college symphony, playing violin and I sometimes accompany on piano. I lead worship for the youth group at my church, and I help with children’s ministry on Sunday. So, I really don’t see why home-school is bad, or weird.

Oh man, let me tell you, I wish I was like you; that is, I wish I could've stayed homeschooled, but in a sense. I wouldn't give up the life I have now, only because of the relationships I've made. If I had stayed homeschooled, I agree, I would've been much better prepared for life and public school. When I went into public school I was in the grade ahead, and I was the "smart kid." Not the smartest, but homeschooling has so many advantages. I just feel like if I stayed in homeschooling, I might not have made the friends I did, but I wouldn't have made lots of the bad decisions I did, and I would've stayed on a harder course, and likely would've been even better at my strengths, like English, drumming, Sports, and Languages. I'm not completely sure what I would be like, but I know I would have a wider variety of academic and educational strengths.

I’m a sophomore right now and I’ve been homeschooled since 4th grade. I wouldn’t go back to public school for 10 grand, I get to do my work when I want to, I’m able to get enough of it done in one day so I can have a three or four day weekend, I’m not forced into a classroom full of people that I can’t stand, and within 6 months I was able to put in over 200 hours of volunteer work.

I was home schooled as well for four years. It was the best experience I ever had. I not only learned advanced curriculum, I also learned time management and organizational skills as I taught myself and my four younger siblings for our last two years of homeschool. I didn’t know what internal discipline was until I did that and I had no idea that I was smart until I went to college and had ridiculously high grades (averaging around 95%) for the first two years of college. I still carry many of those lessons I learned back then with me now and they have served me well.

I've been homeschooled my whole life, I'm in 9th grade now and I'm perfectly fine, everyone I know says I'm very socialized, I'm really upset that people get pictures in there head that home schoolers arent as smart, every home school curriculum I've ever heard of is actually more advanced then public schools, I'm not trying to say all home schoolers are geniuses but there is a fine line between educated and lazy, my mother takes home schooling very seriously because of how much home schoolers are looked down upon, every quiz or test I do my mom wont mark it as passed unless I get a 90% at the least. I have many friends in public school and one day I was talking about pre algebra with one of them, I was in the 5th grade at this point and my friend had no idea what I was talking about. So what im trying to say is just cause someone is homeschooled doesnt make them any less educated then someone who is public schooled or in private school.

I seriously learned more those two years than I had ever learned my entire life. And I was even more "socialized" than I had ever been before. And yes parents do need to be committed to teaching their kids. Thank goodness I was old enough to sort of teach myself since my mom (single) worked :)

I have watched (& had others comment) on how well my children interact & carry on conversations on a wide variety of topics with children of all ages & adults of all kinds. They would not have been able to learn these skills by spending all their time with kids their own ages. They gained these skills by being out in the real world interacting with real people in a variety of settings not stuck at a desk listening to someone tell them to be quiet all day long.

But almost every single homeschooler i know, we use the self-teaching curriculums and go to co-ops and i'm in community college right now (i'm 15). so yes, we do real work and we are socialized. there are huge home schooled communities all over the place. :)

I think you missed my point. In my case, at least, home schooling didn't do me any favours in terms of socialization, and it wasn't until I was regularly in settings with other people that I started to develop better social skills. Social problems exist in public schools, but I'm sure many of us would be better off socially just going to them.

I've known three home schooled teenagers myself. One of them had great social skills and her parents often tried to put her in social situations to outweigh the lack there of from being home schooled. She also had to show up in a building at least once a year (I forget the exact amount) to take a state issued test with other home schooled children. They'd often spend this time socializing as well. I think she learned a lot by being placed in social situations. Now on the opposite coin, I know a parent who is so over-protective of their child, that they are very selective of the social environments they are placed in. Both of the children are lacking in social skills and I believe this is why. I agree with the OP, that homeschooling does make it harder to gather social skills, but as per the scenarios in the first paragraph, there are ways to have a child learn social skills as well.

My kids are BOTH constantly BEGGING to be home-schooled. Of course since my husband and I are NOW in the middle of a nasty divorce....I DOUBT there will be ANY homeschooling going on anytime SOON. I feel BAD for them to be honest because I can completely sympathize with them as to WHY they DON'T like public school and it unfortunately has NOTHING to DO with the reasons MOST other kids want to be homeschooled. I personally feel they just believe it would SOMEHOW give them MORE time with ME as they ALREADY feel they don't see me ENOUGH as it IS.

I wish I was home schooled. My little cousins are home schooled and the eldest, in second grade, is already working with multiplication and fractions.

@billywarren22 Way to go brother! You really did your homework! I love that he didn't respond to your last message! Its great to see that there are still some Christians who are willing to stick up for their faith! Our mission should be to enlighten the misinformed and uninformed masses who go to these ridiculous public schools. I love what you are doing! I will be sure to pray for firegod001 that he becomes aware of his folly and that you keep up the good work! Merry CHRISTmas & happy new year!

i'v been home schooled since 4th grade and have pretty much no social life besides church and scouts and i'm happy not having any friends besides scouts. i'm currently in 10th grade and i plan to get a GED next year. and i have to say that it is ten times better than going to public school.

ROFL! The Canadian Sesame Street used to have the second language as French. That's why I can count to five in French, as well as say the butter. I can even remember my mom saying "Quit watching Sesame Street on Spokane PBS and watch it on CBC. You kids are too Canadian to learn Spanish".

The good thing is when I'm home schooled (Don't start replying saying that I am wrong, I believe it is true) I was able to socialize because I go to church, (Yes I am a christian) there are a lot of nice people there, still get bored half the week so I found stuff that I can do, Stop Motion, Working on a Pepakura ODST helmet (Pepakura is a paper program thing) hope most of you homeschoolers can socialize!

Saying that you're wrong would be going against my point that homeschoolers differ way more than public schoolers. My church is really small, but there's still nice adults there to be social with, as you said. I do 4-H and I looked up Pepakura and it's really cool. I do papercraft which is similar to it, except mine are small projects. Usually just models from video games :)

It's all about parenting. You're going to get plenty of both public school kids and homeschooled kids who don't have a clue about academics or LIFE, because the good parenting isn't there, and you'll have both types who get a great education and learn the other things they need to learn. Either way can work just fine. The one thing that does concern me about homeschooling though, is science. There are lots of reasons why it is difficult for homeschooled kids to get a good science education.

Public schooled Kindergarten through eighth grade. Homeschooled since freshman year, and I get socialization through youth group. My friend laughs whenever there’s a homeschool joke, but the reality is way more boring. Its basically taking college classes online.
