TikTok Nursery Rhymes are Ruining Music

Ойын-сауық

Ok well i'm being a lil dramatic lmao music isn't RUINED because of twinkle twinkle little bitch or gayle but... let's talk about how abcdefu's explosion in popularity influenced other songwriters to take a similar approach.

She may not have had the type of power Melanie or Olivia had, which changed the music game and made incredibly incredible music, but still. Knowing Bella’s backstory and stuff, the music helped her have a better life in which she deserved. So I wouldn’t say it’s Bella’s fault, but the people following it ig?

Little Mix also have a song called ABCDEFU released back in 2016, and if they had a pretty good marketing team and support from their label like Gayle did, and if Tiktok was popular back then, we may have had something like that before. Little Mix could have started the nursery rhyme trend, it did have the authenticity, but just not the right amount of resources to. Although they touched our hearts with other songs way before ABCDEFU, their hard work is still looked upon 'incorrectly' because of how media portrays females. personally i think abcdefu actually says something about that anger after a first bad breakup, because that anger is often described as a temper tantrum, and using the ABCs to display that is an interesting idea. it feels intentional, you know? but "twinkle twinkle little bitch" doesn't really have any of that, it's just. edgy for the sake of it.

i think using nursery rhymes to be edgy can work, when used properly. i love Melanie Martinez (don't tell the other metal-heads though, they might behead me if they find out i like a pop star) and i think her use of nursery rhymes is clever. as someone with PTSD (i'm not looking for pity, i'm trying to make a point) i can relate with something child-like being corrupted by trauma, turning that once innocent thing into something horrifying, and Melanie does this very well, because there's also a bit of a horror element with her imagery, adding to the corrupted innocence. but then you have people like these who use nursery rhymes and childish things but makes them edgy with curse words and sexual innuendos, and that's not really clever, it's just trying too hard to be edgy.

Granted the songs sound nothing alike and just shares the A B C D E F U “lyrics” so it isn’t a copy or anything, but as a Little Mix fan in the States, they are who I thought of when I first heard the Gayle song.

1:48 this is “jealousy, jealousy” erasure (though one could argue she’s somewhat saying she’s jealous of the ex’s new girl based on the similar theme in lyrics to the other songs on the album therefore making it a breakup song, i personally choose to believe it is what it is at face value as a social commentary on beauty standards and how it affects peoples self esteem 😅)

I would actually find it interesting if someone made a song BASED off the nursery rhyme and turned into something new. Like maybe a song that takes the rhyme and uses symbolism. Example, maybe a song loosely based off twinkle little star, and the song is about the singer missing the star (who is a representation for someone no longer in their life without being specific)

i think a better use for, like, "childlike themes, but angry" is a song directed towards like, a toxic ex-friend you had when you were young or a shitty caretaker. like, in a way of like "you ruined my childhood but im taking it back" like i feel like when its over an ex it doesnt make sense thematically but i think a song that instead of "fuck my ex" was "fuck my shitty abusive mom" that called back to childhood elements would be like.... REALLY good? obviously with the right amount of skill and everything like you get that but i think the theming of "you stole my childhood from me so im TAKING IT BACK and MAKING IT MINE" would be....kinda cool as hell. actually.
