Three Seals Rescued from Entanglement

A gill net and two different kinds of rope were responsible for today's seal entanglements.
Ocean rubbish and plastic remains a massive problem for Namibia's Cape Fur Seal population. Most seals get entangled under water, while they a hunting for fish. They are notoriously playful and play with anything they can find - including fishing nets, fishing line, empty buckets, fabric, pieces of rope and garments.
Ocean Conservation Namibia (www.ocnamibia.org) has made it their mission to catch and disentangle as many seals as possible to spare them from a life of injury, pain, infection, and eventually death. As of 22 July, Antoine, Naude and Denzil have freed 329 seals in 2020 alone 🦭

Well with good binoculars, amazing team work, lots of experience, and a lot of luck. There are normally at least 3 rescuers scanning the same group of seals. Sometimes it is the body language of the seal that first catches our attention, often an entangled seal is very wary and skittish, presumably due to being in pain and unable to free itself of the entanglement. Sometimes it is the sunlight catching the tiny thread poking out from its neck. Once we have all focused on the seal and agreed that we believe there to be an entanglement one of us doesn't take their eyes off of it while the others prepare for the rescue. We often lose track of an individual in a large group of fleeing seals, but in most cases at least one person is able to guide the one with the net if need be.

THESE WERE GREAT RESCUES! Naude sometimes acts like it's almost nothing! He just snags their foot flipper, snips the line, peels it off them, hops up, jogs to the next one, rinse and repeat... yet he's literally saving many lives! Each seal would suffer horribly, and surely they would die unnoticed by most, without that small, focused attention being done just for them by Naude and team. Thank you, gentlemen, we simply love the seals, and you too, for your selfless dedication. Your rescues are a glorious thing to behold, over and over again, it's always uplifting to see it, YOU'RE AWESOME!
