Baby Seal Rescued from Illegal Gill Nets

Antoine and Naude from Ocean Conservation Namibia (www.ocnamibia.org) are noticing an increasing amount of Cape Fur Seals, especially pups being entangled in illegal gill nets lately.
On this morning out at Pelican Point they caught 2 within 15 minutes of each other. The first pup was entangled in a slightly thicker, stronger gill net that was wrapped around his neck, face and through his mouth. They managed to cut him free and he had sustained no damage.
Shortly thereafter, they ran after a seal that was trapped in a big ball of commercial fishing line. Antoine got him in the net, and Naude scanned the area for any other entanglements. At the last moment he saw a young female pup covered in a very fine, thin gill net. He caught her by hand and it took them quite a while to cut loose the many fine lines around her neck and face. This thin line had started cutting into the pup a little but the damage was minimal. She looked much happier running away without her burden. 🦭

Dilholio yeah they’re expecting pain in order to know to fight back harder. The pain never comes so they’re really confused. You can see it initially when they have their head restrained, their automatic response is to try to bite. Then they start to calm down when they realize something else is happening. They still looked scared, because honestly who wouldn’t be scared of large hairless penguins sitting on top of you.

They realize how incredibly better their lives are after encountering these humans, and they start to happily line up on the shore when they see Naude and Antoine coming. There must be a point where they communicate among themselves and say, "Hey!! Not only did none of us die after our encounters with the humans, but we no longer hurt!!" 👏💛

In a lot of the videos, you can see the seals visibly relax once the lines start being cut off. They may not understand what's happening, but they certainly can feel the effects of being freed from something that's been cutting and/or choking them for who knows how long. I'm sure they're still terrified, but at some level they can feel that sense of relief.

@@WhatAboutTheBee : Does it seem like they, too, leap for joy after the last piece of netting is cut? It seems like they feel the loss of pressure from entanglement and maybe from the humans simultaneously as a sign that it's okay to bounce up and leap away. Or just my overactive imagination. ☺

@@dianemoonstone4715 After the huge surge of adrenaline during capture and the fear when being handled, the seal is on mental overload. The relief from pain must also be palpable as the entanglement is cut away. But when freedom returns, its hard to know the emotion. The seals are very intelligent. They may very well experience joy in that moment as well. At least, I hope so.
