Cringe-worthy Gill Net Seal Rescue

We know this is not an ideal rescue. We know Antoine would have needed at least one more rescuer by his side to help him with this horrible, deep gill net disentanglement. But Antoine was on his own, and he did not want to let this pup go back into the ocean to his certain death. Gill nets are unforgiving. They are illegal in most parts of the world because they do not let anything get away. Once caught in this net, the animal has no chance to escape and will suffocate or starve.
It's painful to watch Antoine trying to remove countless strands of gill net, only to discover even deeper ones. Just as he is about to release the seal, he has to restrain him in the rescue net to dig into his bleeding wounds to remove hidden parts of the gill net. There are few rescue videos that give a better example of our desperation in this uphill battle against an industry that gets to dump their old fishing gear into the ocean, unpunished and barely even criticized. 🦭

    @Ирина Амлински there is a saying which in going to adjust a bit to respond to you. Those who can, do. Those who can’t, criticise! Tony was doing a rescue alone, without the benefit of his team’s back up. The seal was a fighter, forcing him to basically work with one hand on a thrashing patient, with a tool that unexpectedly malfunctioned. He was out in the sun, wind, and sand working up a set and dodging painful bites to save an innocent animal from an awful death. You were sitting in your comfortable chair nicely criticizing Tony, and even criticised the other viewers for their own comments. You even made a point to time stamp example examples - since you have so much time on your hands, I'm assuming you don't do rescues on your own. That means of that poor seal had to rely on you instead of Tony, had be dead now from starvation or infection.

He was working on this case for 10+ minutes trying his hardest not to further hurt this seal AND not injure himself. He handled it amazingly! So... you go out there and do what these awesome people do everyday. Make sure you avoid getting bit or injure your body holding down a stong seal. Knives, chisels, chainsaw blades, saw blades, scissors, hooks and razors all require regular maintenance to perform well. A sandy work environment presents many serious challenges to keeping a fine edge on a tool. I believe that better edge maintenance would solve, or at least lessen, many of the shortcomings you noted. @@fart63 The US EPA has strict laws on the books regarding the environment. Whether they are enforced around the entire coastline, and coastal waters consistently is something else. So much of enforcement here is politically motivated, however. What is seen in international waters, and in other countries regarding the environment is sad. Many countries have corrupt governments, and no EPA equivalents, and anything goes, unfortunately. 😔

    Oh, Tony, you should be immensely proud of yourself! You were on your own AND working without the net ... that pup was a fighter AND incredibly strong ... the scissors were rusty and hard to open AND there were SO many lines from that disgusting gill net!! You had so many variables going against you, but you did NOT let ANY of those stop you from removing the HORRIBLE entanglement!! YOU are an integral member of an AMAZING team, and, as always with OCN rescues, the pup has a 2nd chance of a long life! Thank you for doing what you do SO well!

    Oh, Tony... you did a *fantastic* job with a rather difficult patient. Your determination has given this seal a chance at life, which he didn't have before. By the time he reached the waves, he'd already forgotten the few moments of stress. Thank you for an amazing rescue!

    @Ирина Амлински you've been watching these for 2 years, but yet at the end you say that this is the first time you've seen something like this. The scissors weren't working, so we had to use the hook. You're the only one in these comments thought he did a bad job. Because of Tony, the seal has a cut on his mouth but will be just fine. Go spread your Sunshine somewhere else.

    @Ирина Амлински If the rescue process were as easy as you say, then everyone would do it and the world would be all rainbows and lollipops... ... but on the beach, in real time, the 'surgeon' has to make snap decisions to (a) save the seal and (b) not cause it too much stress. This seal is alive now, thanks to Tony, and the blood was soon washed away by the sea. Personally, I've had that much blood from a knife cut in the kitchen and I managed to survive. The fact that your judgmental comment is the only negative one should tell you something.

  • @IschysSyrra

    @IschysSyrra

    @Ирина Амлински When the seal is in the net he finds the line and removes it. He even says it was ripped out of the wound during the netting, so it is loose and he can remove it quickly. Removing an object from a wound usually causes blood flow, because the body is desperate to heal even with the object inside. That does not mean you shouldn't get it out in these cases. I see your ironic comment on people 'not watching the release process', while you yourself missed an important part, while furiously writing a negative comment.
