Three Al Di Meola Style Speed Picking Exercises

Музыка

In this video I show you three picking exercises in the style of Al Di Meola. Al is famous for his percussive picking patterns, which have been a big influence on me.
The first exercise is loosely based on Al's intro to "Suite Golden Dawn.
The second exercise develops the first pattern to allow you to navigate the scale patterns for all seven modes of the diatonic scale.
Finally, the third exercise introduces a "four note per string" idea to what was learnt in the first two exercises.
Above all, the most important thing to do is to have fun.

Very impressive example of up slant picking. Jerry Reed used this too and could hybrid pick although he also played without a pick on many of his compositions.

I have to agree with Scott. Thanks for putting this out there; but, the reverb is mushing over the top of the notes and it's hard to discern what your fingers are doing. Depicting each exercise once at a very slow speed, with a metronome, and no reverb, will clarify what notes and fingerings you intend. That said, thanks for putting some Di Meola exercises up there, I've been looking for them.

Thanks. I've been considering doing some stuff on using the metronome. When I put this video up I didn't think too much about it. It didn't get that many views. Maybe I should redo it, or do more Al related videos.

If I saw correct you did some economy picking on scales (pickin twice on row down or up). I don't think he does that, he alternate picks. Maybe on some chord stuff he does that but that's bit different thing.

Thanks. They are Ibanez copies of Dimarzio Super Distortions. They would have come stock with the guitar when it was new.

You use your thumb a lot to move, wiggle and pick like I do. Any disadvantages over full wrist style picking for speed runs?

Thanks. I find it helps with pick slanting - it's more of a "pinch" motion. It's a cross between Eddie's "hummingbird" and the Franco-Belgian violin bow grip. I also found out that Yngwie also uses a similar pick holding technique. The secret is to try and keep your forearm relaxed and rely more on the "pinch" in combination with the wrist twist. Troy Grady has some excellent stuff on this. I used to use Ultex 1.14mm picks, but I found I was hitting the strings more. I now use Jazz III picks and that's improved. Also, the method I use isn't that good for hybrid picking where you use the pick and your second finger (say like in country music). Of course, Al uses a closed wrist approach, but my problem with closed wrist playing is that you end up resorting to elbow picking to get the speed, which can lead to all sorts of hypertensions/RSIs, etc.

It would maybe sound better without the reverb. It's too muddy. Please slow down the 2nd and 3rd exercises to show the fingerings. You might want to mention that your are playing in 3s or 4s. Maybe run a metronome and start very slow and then gradually increase. Thanks.

Strat style has a longer scale which is easier to play than what Al played.

You have a lot of flubbing of notes. Your really good but you my want to slow down until you build more accuracy. But love your message.

You are a good player, but you need a better chair. Your back posture is terrible. You must get a terrible bad back from sitting that way. One of the reasons I always use a strap now and sit up straight. If I don't use a strap I put the the guitar on my left leg which stops me stooping to play.
