Welcome to my KZread channel. My main interests are music, mathematics, literature, history, linguistics, medicine, photography and science. My two main instruments are the guitar and the violin. As a photographer, I'm beginning to experiment with video and I'm running a series of weblogs called Nature in Action. I'm very happy to talk about English Literature, and my main area of interest is 19th century/Victorian literature, but I also like like poetry and drama of all eras. As a mathematician my main interests are in Game Theory and Formal Logic. I occasionally dabble in current affairs and philosophy, but my philosophy tends to develop out of my interest in mathematics and "seeing patterns" in nature and music. Di Meola's sound is in his hands and sense of time. He has a unique vibrato that is easily recognizable no matter what tone or effects he's using.
True. However, he has left a legacy of good music and unique stylistics worth pursuing through.
@@peterquinn7237 I think he's a fine composer and arranger. And an excellent record producer. But I haven't really been inspired by much of anything he's released in the past 24 years or so. Zona Desperata is the last piece I really loved.

Mel9 orchestra is a mellotron patch seen in songs like Spiral Architect by Black Sabbath and The Grand Conjuration by Opeth. Mel9 is a mellotron pedal. This means that it's sounds will not sound clean and realistic as it's a mellotron as opposed to actual strings/instruments/synths. Mellotrons use tape for their sound and that often has warbly and saturated sounds that are lofi in nature. EHX string9 has a realistic symphonic patch as it's specifically meant to recreate the sound of a string orchestra (not throught a mellotron). However most patches on the string9 are actually digital synth patches and sampler patches, with Juno and AARP etc, so they'll sound fake and not as organic as the mellotron, but also will probably be used in different music genres, with mellotron often being used by Rock bands and some old metal bands, whilst synths are used in more electronic music etc. It's a different sound. Then you have the PCM sound in the string9 which is a digital sampler sound, probably based from samplers like the CMI and the Emulator used often in pop music. And then you also have Floppy which is basically what came after the sounds seen on the mel9, an instrument known as the optigan/orchestron, that was essentially like a mellotron but used optical disks instead of tapes, and had it's own unique vibe. The optigan is pretty rare and rarely used and never really caught on due to the onslaught and availability of synthesis and digital samplers. The way I see it is that both sound amazing and have different sounds, but the mel9 is more of a niche pedal, due to it being specifically mellotron sounds that sound amazing for what they are and are good for harsh and distorted sounds and I often use the mel9 for my metal works as an ambient pad under my riffs. On the contrary the String9 is a pedal that offers a few sounds in a more broad context, specifically themed around string sounds but it goes from synths, digital samplers and optical samplers and even a choir synth, with actually only one "real" string sound (symphonic), and each of them sound different from both mellotrons and each other despite being the same sound (strings). If anything the mel9 is a bit of an oddball in the 9 series as from what I've seen, most 9 series have one sound or a few sounds that range between different models and instruments, at the switch of the rotary dial, whereas the mel9 is all one instrument (the mellotron) playing back different sounds/patches, which is great but also the pedal will be very niche as it will always be a mellotron no matter what patch is selected. If you like Mellotrons, with their lofi grit and warble then this pedal is for you. Mel9 usually sounds amazing clean, saturated or overdriven (before a drive pedal or amp), whereas the string9 pretty much has to be played clean or it will sound weird, however you could potentially stick a bitcrusher pedal after some of the digital sample/synth sounds like PCM or Floppy or even the synth ones, to get a vintage atari game sound. Both pedals sound great with reverb, but the string9 pretty much requires reverb to get a large string sound that sounds big and orchestral, especially on the symphonic preset. The choir patches on the mel9 are tape choirs of tapes of real singers and sound way better and creepier than the synthesised choirs on the string9, however the string9 generally is focused on strings more than anything, so of you want strings only, then the string9 is for you.

This is an album you almost have to put aside time to not listen to but experience. It is a trip from start to finish-which is strictly how I listen to it, and how I presume it is intended to be listened to. Jerry for sure has a skeleton used for songwriting, a strong yet simple drive if you will;), but the music is so full by the way that he layers harmony after harmony in songs, and I can’t give you one track written or performed by this man I don’t love. I love to mess around with my headphones; half plugged in, in mono, shit like that and you will hear yet another harmony buried deep in a song. He’s a genius. A couple notes, though, I believe he still was on Marshall Amps at the time. I also believe most of the album is in D. With a few exceptions like Locked On, Owned, Psychotic break in Db. Tracks like Bargain basement Howard Hughes, Pro False Idol, Give It A Name are absolutely in D. If you look at how some of them are played structurally, which as mentioned his riffs are very much that, in D vs Eb a lot of tracks match with his style of playing while in Eb feel a lot more unorthodox.

I think the thing we have to do is realize 2 things: 1) we can only play one note or chord or set of harmonic intervals or one phrase at a time; and 2) music is about problem solving. I see it like pushing the mistakes further down the page until they're pushed off the page. We solve the problems, the mistakes or what ever is not right with what ever we're playing, by breaking it down to it's simplest movements and components and getting them right, and getting the movements to them right and them movements from them to the next thing right. But it all starts and stops with good (or appropriate for the music) sounding notes. Other thing is that that it is marathon, not a sprint. There maybe people take to certain parts of playing easily and quickly, but there's so much to learn and do that we have to take the long view and be in it for the long haul, one note at a time. Like you can't enjoy playing a tune if you don't enjoy playing each note or each chord or phrase.

I'm listening on very old computer speakers from the 90s right now, but I think my question goes to "high gain" in general, not just that patch on that that amp. How does the touch and the way the note like 'blooms' (if that's a word in the tone lexicon) feel with that? Does it feel organic, or does it feel like how you play and dig in has a big impact on the tone? I learned first on nylon strings and finger picking, so high gain never felt natural to me. How does that patch feel to you? If I'm not making sense, I apologize. Also, and for contrast, you're playing a Fender Mustang II, and yesterday I dusted off and put back together a '71 Fender Pro Reverb. I fired it up to see if I get get a sense of what kind of work it will need as it hasn't been touched in about 20 years. Play a few notes and I think "not so bad". Then I hear it very distorted. Then I hear a slight pop and a "fffffff" as some gas gets released & dissipates from somewhere around v2 or v3. Good times lol.
Thanks. If it's a good amp, you should get the natural "bloom". I also prefer a bit of sag in the preamp from pick attack. Also (and since you are into amp repair you should understand this) a decent hi gain amp has a very high forward beta - that is, the gain is meant to be ridiculously high so that it overdrives naturally. However, the overdrive sounds naturally smooth. The Mustang is "passable" but I know that a Soldano or Boogie would run rings round it. For home use, however, it's fine because I can run it at lower volumes.
Can I use this pedal just to play music, improvise, without focusing on scales, please ? Or will go out of tune ?🙏
Thanks. It works best when you tune it to a particular mode and key, otherwise it gets "confused" and doesn't sound too good.
