In this video, I will share with you five really simple alternate picking sequences that I use all the time. We will be working in the key of A Dorian.
1. Exercise #1 uses the three notes per string scale, on a descending A Dorian sequence.
2. Exercise # 2 features an ascending sequence in sixteen notes triplets. In this one, I will be using a non-conventional three-note note per string position.
3. Exercise # 3 explores the three notes per string A Dorian scale but shifts the order of the notes in a cool way.
4. In Exercise # 4 we are going to use the A minor pentatonic scale but fingering it as a three notes per string scale.
5. Exercise # 5 is a bit more challenging with some string skipping inside the sequence.

Can we have a sequence with 5 or 7 notes per beat?

Great lesson David, thank you. Years ago I was taught, due to always dropping my pick, to drill a small hole in the center of the pick and I have not dropped a pick ever since. I used a drill press, but have also held the pick with a pair of pliers and drilled the pick. Works like magic...

it's the speed part that i need to work on , not so much to worry about the picks, and my guitar neck being an Ibanez works great with this type of lesson, great lesson, really helps develops your alternative picking and speed,

I was originally taught to pick with the pick turned sideways. An ol' bluegrass man taught me that it was "flat-picking", instead of the alternate picking we all call it today. That man is the reason behind me learning how to alternate pick at all, which lead to me actually being a guitar player. So thank you. RIP Jesse Aldridge And thank you David, for a fine lesson.

i've told you this before, and nothing's changed - you're a shredder bro. i'm taking a stab at this next one... you're a canuck, eh hoser lol? take off bob & doug lol. anyway nice touch taking us behind the scenes there as you *flub* the 16/trips. that last pattern betrays your fondness for the metal. good good shhhtuff.

I always thought that too homie, but you can do it! The biggest thing is to eliminate any extra/motion. Make sure your pick isnt deeper in the strings than it needs to be, and just keep plugging at it. You got this!

I use a paper punch to punch a round hole in my picks. This way the skin from your first finger and thumb are touching each other. You still can turn the pick any you wish if you don't want to use the pointy end and you'll never drop your picks any more

First 3 were cheesy but very good warm ups in my opinion. Others are really kickass and really gives a good perspective. Thank you so much! I like the vids when you get the Burnt Maple Leaf Cu24 because I have the exact same! Of course as always PRS gives the souls to the wood, so even the exact guitars look different and unique. I will practice them regularly, thanks!

Yes. If you can't shred 16th triplets you are not allowed to call yourself a guitarist. Stevie T. would call you guifakist. All the best A guifakist who struggles even with 8th notes...
