There's no such thing as "self-taught". Also, ask yourself: at what age did he start, where did he learn his techniques, whom did he have the good fortune to know, what was his musical environment like, and so on and so forth. I'd say that for anyone to reach this level it's basically 99.999999% that 1) They have to start young 2) They have to take lessons (or something *like* lessons, eg KZread or Skype

Just throwing it out there, there is not cameraman to blame here. The video has 3 cameras simultaneously filming, one wide angle, one picking hand closeup, and one fretting hand close up. It's the editor who chooses which footage to play over the audio track and when. Blame the editor. Hard to believe they would hire an editor who knows nothing about guitar though.

I'd love to hear this entire lesson with a clean, uncompressed electric, or a mic'ed acoustic. The super-compressed overdriven tone used here is kind of a hadicap because, if you hit a note softly the compression pushes it up, if you hit it extra hard the clipping limits it. I'm not for one second suggesting Master Govan isn't playing perfectly, I believe he is. I would just like to hear all the subtleties of his playing.

One other tip, don’t forget if you use extra light gauge strings and tune down, such as a half step, this can cause a similar problem to using a thinner pick. It can cause a lot of play in the string up and down. You may not realize the loose vertical movement of the string can make alternate picking harder. If you’re stuck at a certain speed, try heavier strings or another guitar that is setup for heavier strings with less vertical play.

I play 08 on my high E and tune down a half step and use thick picks. Really all you need is a lighter touch. For me, it's easier to play fast and clean with extra light gauge on the high strings because it actually forces you to have a lighter touch and restrict your movement so its more 'economical'.

The angled pick is my favorite way to play. The pick slips over the strings instead of catching, and the attack is a little wider and softer. Because the pick is not fighting the strings, the arm and wrist are more relaxed. Relaxed muscles move faster, rigid muscles are slower.

+RolanTHUNDER Hey It's a great pick for sure. I used it for almost 10 years. I have since moved to a pick made by Gravity called the "sunrise". Give it a try you may be glad you did. I would say the main bonus is added articulation and slight treble/ pick attack response.

+RolanTHUNDER gravitypicks.com/ Another great option is besides being able to choose gauge (1,2,3mm) you can also choose the picks size (mini, bigmini, standard and xl)also you can choose grip holes in the center of the pick (or none) and the finish of the edge of the pick polished or matte finish.

Great picks, but I wish they had a beveled tip ala the Petrucci picks. I love Delrin 1.5mm, which have beveled edges.

Not entirely about alternate picking, but still an excellent instructional video that explains a lot about picking.
