Without Al Di Meola hitting the Fusion scene in the 70's, 80's alternate-pickers like Paul Gilbert, MAB, Rusty Cooley, etc probably wouldn't exist. McLaughlin's music and playing was too esoteric for rockers to copy, so the more rock-ish sounding Di Meola was the perfect player to emulate.

Al Di Meola is one of the best alternate pickers on the planet and has perfect timing and massive stamina. I would challenge anybody to play even one of his pieces on accousic guitar..the guy is phenominal.

@@Ivuspp Wander Taffo is a retro 70's Rock/Blues player. It's kind of out of place to mention him in an Al Di Meola instructional video. At least mention a Brazilian guitarist with some serious chops 🙄

@@Ivuspp He's playing a lot of open string Country style picking in this clip that's different from the Di Meola style. It would be better if it were just him playing, instead of the violinist being the center of attraction. But yeah, this is a better example of his skills than the electric Blues/Rock stuff he does.

@TimeLordGuitar so true..from my own experimentation when you anchor on the bridge and pick like that it has cleanest and the most penetrating tone, then by just using the fingers or whole arm and also while moving towards the middle it has a wormer sound...

John Petrucci, Paul Gilbert and MAB all agree that picking from your fingers is the worst form of picking technique, even though it's important to note Petrucci and MAB both also anchor. Also I would make a point that Shawn Lane is the best alternate picker but I digress.

Happiness has almost nothing to do with skill or abilities. Infact people with various types of high level understanding can often get crushed by daily life due to how mundane it is and how much bullshit they have to mentally deal with that they can't help but have a visceral reaction to, leading them overtime to become dull and monotone to endure the bullshit of other people and their own human limits. Could be classed as arrogant. Those those with lesser dreams and lesser understanding can flow through life with no real friction. Ignorance is bliss.

  • @TimeLordGuitar

i disagree that the yngwie/yngwie-clone "thumb flicking" picking technique that you described is more precise than al dimeola's picking method. the technique you describe is basically the same movement as writing your name on a peice of paper...and there is NO WAY you will get the same attack with that type of picking. it works well for malmsteen for his style, but his runs are not as clean and rhythmically sound as al di meola or paul gilbert who has a similar picking style to al's.

  • @Dankjo

Agree..malmsteens technique works just for Electric guitar..I have tried both, the scalloping thing I use If I'm not properly warmed Up, It's still more attack than economy though,

I think he just has a closed mind when it comes to picking... Anything is possible. Petrucci? hello. Hes a good guitarist, but cocky, like Malmsteen. Certain people just have different attitudes.
