Also very ironic since season 3, the baltic sea arc , has more than twice the amount of action of season 1. Not sure if you read the manga, but the season is Thorfinns new pacifism ideology being put to the test in the real world (outside this rural farm).... against the backdrop of a Jomsvikings civil war and characters from Thorfinns past trying to drag him back to hell (violence)

The Vikings going from a ruckus crowd to absolute silence. You could hear the admiration welling from all their hearts as they watched on. We don’t have much background of Drott but you can tell taking 100 of his blows isn’t something most of them would even sign up for but Thorfinn did. Drott even WHILE KNEELING apologized and paid homage to Thorfinn. It’s what makes this show so great. The sense of honor pride and straight up testosterone you can feel from these scenes are crazy

@@NagatoOPRESSORTHUGLIFE @28Decimo the OP is just pointing out the literary parallel between Jesus and Thorfinn. Thorfinn is in a way taking his beating for the sake of the farm in the same way Jesus was crucified for us. And in doing so, Thorfinn is doing no wrong just as Jesus did. The imagery is also very clear with Thorfinn's hair looking like traditional depictions of Jesus's. And of course, Thorfinn was inspired by Jesus's sermon on the mount that he heard snake reading because it was the same as Thors' philosophy.

@@noahjacob5552 while yes with the imagery it’s embracing the lessons of Jesus. The story and author has admitted it is a very Christian story with the themes running throughout partly due to the fall of paganism. Saying basically viking Jesus is comparing one’s self to the literal son of God, which one, isn’t fair to Thorfinn, but two Jesus didn’t need to work on a farm to not kill people. It evokes similar imagery due to the desire to emulate the messages of the Bible that Thorfinn has been listening to.

  • @Lauderdizzle

True. I have mixed feelings about Snake. He definitely wasn't the bigger man when it came to how he handled Gardar; Gardar was gravely injured and wasn't going to hurt anyone else, trying to kill him wasn't going to bring back the men he lost, and it was only going to hurt Arnheid; THAT was small of Snake, in my opinion. But he's also relatively humble, perked up Thorfinn when they first met by making a point about how he still wanted to live (by attacking him, but giving an encouraging laugh and smile afterwards), looked out for his boys on the battlefield against Canute's Jomsvikings, and he does stuff like this. If nothing else he's an interesting character. I just wish he handled certain things differently.

People can hate the less action of this series but the character development in this season has been huge. The fact they can make us all sit there and let us know how strong thorfinn has become without using his fists they even threw in a fight where he drew with someone who was extremely skilled and had a weapon whilst thorfinn had bare hands. The handicaps they placed on thorfinn have gone way to unnoticed, if people are complaining about the lack of fighting and not realising they are still showing you just how strong thorfinn really is without him fighting, then there’s no hope for those people and they’re the ones missing out on this series

I love the foil between Thorfinn and Canute. Thorfinn started out as a man defined by hate and violence, but grew into someone defined by love and non-violence. Meanwhile, Canute was weak and indecisive, but grew into a man who felt that unconditional love meant doing anything to create a world defined by love and peace. Canute is an example of how good people can become monsters through the false promise of utopias and the philosophy of the “greater good”. Meanwhile, Thorfinn is an example of how no one is beyond redemption, and most importantly, the best way to live is by treating every person as if they are the only person alive: everyone is an end in of themselves, rather than a means to an end. That’s why Thorfinn hearing the Sermon on the Mount from the Bible is so awesome: if you don’t love even your enemies (or like Thorfinn says, have no enemies in the first place), how can you say to be loving at all? Like everyone’s favourite drunken priest said to Canute: “That is not love, but discrimination”. Only bullies rely on violence and consider themselves “strong” or “manly”. No, true strength, true courage, true love, comes from the strength to reject hatred and embrace kindness

Fun fact for everyone: In case people don’t get how strong thorfinn is, the technique throfinn uses to absorb/dodge the punches is a technique also used by a boxing champion called Date from the anime Hajime no ippo. A technique usually only learnt from the most experienced fighters around which takes years to master and thorfinn acheived that during his war days as a child and still without practise used that technique out of the blue in this video. Throfinn is insane

It's not that deep, dude. I just felt like saying this... I'm from India during my younger days, I hated Mahatma Gandhi for his ideologies and his approach to life and war. I didn't understand how he viewed this world and how he handled things. During the colonial era of India when our people became slaves, I thought violence would be the only way to fight back. However, now I understand that violence will only result in more violence and nonviolence is the only way to achieve peace and I came to understand Gandhi through Thorfinn. "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win." - Mahatma Gandhi It just fits perfectly for this scene.
