You know what the sad thing is? In real life, Canute actually did do the whole "I will stop the waves now" demonstration. In the real life example though, the reason was that one of his vassals told Cannute that he now had total control over the oceans, and Canute was like "Idiot. If I actually had total control over the ocean, I could stop the waves. I am just a man. An important man, but just a man all the same." But as the years went by, Cannute instead became something of a meme where people went "Hur hur! Dumb king thought he could control the waves!" and Cannute's original message sailed completely over most people's heads. Probably in part because most kings after Cannute didn't like being reminded that in the end they were only human

It's great that Vinland Saga's author brought Einar into this conversation as well. Thorfinn for example is the son of one of the strongest, if not the strongest (in this anime), viking, so he's a capable warrior. Canute was born into royal family, so he actually never had to suffer the way commoners did/do. Both of them were very lucky about the way they were born into this world. Einar on the other hand is just a simple farmer, whose village was burned down and whose family was killed. He portrays every commoner of this anime, who is suffering because of war. Bringing his perspective and thoughts into this whole conversation is really something else. Vinland saga is by far one of the best anime I've ever watched and read (manga), maybe even the best.

I loved how both Thorfinn and Canute's characters have developed, and their point of view have pretty much flipped to the other through their experiences in the four year timeskip. Thorfinn who knew nothing but drawing his daggers and causing bloodshed for his goal of revenge and Canute who was a hopeful boy who wanted to create a paradise and now Thorfinn has become the pacifist who wants nothing to do with violence while Canute has become a king who's hardened his heart to the point where he won't hesitate to kill anyone and everyone as long as it reaches him closer to fulfilling his ambitions. Two masterfully written characters and how they've now come face to face. I can't wait for the next episode and see how this confrontation concludes!

Thorfinn negotiated peace by force and wits. He took all the punches, he got outnumbered but he brought himself entirely. He negotiated peace as a free man. He held Einar back because HE understood his anger but wanted to show Canute that obedience is earned with respect. Einar obeyed him giving up his JUSTIFIED anger against Canute. Doesn't feel like a negotiation. More like a conversation where they're expressing their beliefs and trying to understand each other. Negotiation happens when two parties have something to give each other. Here Thorfinn has nothing to bargain with the King at all. What Thorfinn did give the King was another perspective.
2:41 Canute really did became similar to his father. He even did the same pose as his father did at the summet.

best part...IRL Great King Canute actually did this speech to his army.
Ah yes the famous image of canute facing the sea. Would've been beautiful if he was sitting in his chair, but still really awesome to see!
Canute speech gave me chills. We are Vikings..
I was tuned in at the edge of my seat throughout this whole scene between Thorfinn and Canute. . The whole lead up to this moment was legendary.
O:36 when he realises exactly who thorfinn is, the look on his face was priceless!! Especially because you rarely see his eyes throughout the series or that type of expression from him.
I love the foil between Thorfinn and Canute. Thorfinn started out as a man defined by hate and violence, but grew into someone defined by love and non-violence. Meanwhile, Canute was weak and indecisive, but grew into a man who felt that unconditional love meant doing anything to create a world defined by love and peace. Canute is an example of how good people can become monsters through the false promise of utopias and the philosophy of the “greater good”. Meanwhile, Thorfinn is an example of how no one is beyond redemption, and most importantly, the best way to live is by treating every person as if they are the only person alive: everyone is an end in of themselves, rather than a means to an end. That’s why Thorfinn hearing the Sermon on the Mount from the Bible is so awesome: if you don’t love even your enemies (or like Thorfinn says, have no enemies in the first place), how can you say to be loving at all? Like everyone’s favourite drunken priest said to Canute: “That is not love, but discrimination”. Only bullies rely on violence and consider themselves “strong” or “manly”. No, true strength, true courage, true love, comes from the strength to reject hatred and embrace kindness

@@libra365 you are exactly spot on. The tower of babel is just one of the few stories where god cuts down the arrogance of humans. My theory as to why this is, is that having the highest authority figure like god has a very valuable role individually and socially. on the surface it just looks like god is an asshole, but It underscores the importance of humility, obedience, and recognizing that there are limits to human aspirations. this is King Canute and every major empire's ( just like Askeladde references the roman empire ) biggest "unseen horizon". In their pursuit of power and dominance, these empires may overlook the wisdom of humility, failing to understand that true strength lies not in sheer might, but in the ability to govern with fairness, compassion, and respect for others. Their blindness to humility blinds them to the potential pitfalls of unchecked pride and arrogance, which can lead to their downfall. The biggest but immediate sticking point that Canute has is the warrior class. Thorkell is a great example of a warrior. without war he has no purpose in his life; war is his paradise. same goes for most of the vikings. Even in todays society we have so many veterans, broken from some of the strongest bonds they've had in their entire life, even closer than blood. people that you've fought besides. We aren't doing enough to support our veterans in 2023, can you imagine in 1,000AD? 22 Veterans die by suicide a day, 67,000+ are homeless. But just like Thorfinn, no one is beyond redemption. that's the beauty of Christianity that a lot of people dont realize or dont appreciate enough.
I just imagine what canute would've did if the waves by some magical means stopped. It would've been so awkward.

Simply, amazing!
Canute set his throne by the sea shore and commanded the incoming tide to halt and not to wet his feet and robes. Yet "continuing to rise as usual [the tide] dashed over his feet and legs without respect to his royal person. Then the king leapt backwards, saying: 'Let all men know how empty and worthless is the power of kings, for there is none worthy of the name, but He whom heaven, earth, and sea obey by eternal laws.'" He then hung his gold crown on a crucifix, and never wore it again "to the honour of God the almighty King".-Henry of Huntingdon, The Chronicle, p. 199
i like how the more the conversation progress the more canute start to being honest, at the start is like, "i do it because they started it" and at the end is like "i have a bigger plan and this was a necessary evil" and the more honest he his, the more einar ir mad at him because he can see how arrogant he is and was able to bring so much to the conversation.

@@ahnafrafi1550 Dude thorfinn is super durable, agile, and resilient. He was able to get up and still fight after taking a good hit from Thorkell when he was a teenager. I'm sure 1 hit from thorkell is just as damaging as those 100 hits he took from drott. He's not that injured, and thorfinn is a grown man now compared to when he fought thorkell. Thorfinn bloodlusted would be able to kill over half of those guards before they even would know what happened. He's that fast and skilled.

You're acting like Jomvikings are some mob of enemies like in one piece that can be one-shotted. I agree that blood lusted thorfinn is that skilled and durable but there are just so many cable soldiers right next to canute
What's the title of the OST wich begin at 4:00???
