Brian May was a guest of Andrew Neil on the "This Week" political discussion programme, answering questions on what constitutes sport and where to draw the line when 'sporting' pursuits are cruel. Brian and Michael Portillo differed vastly in their opinions of what is acceptable to the general public.

It's a shame time ran out Brian was putting some pressure on the other guy and it would have been interesting to hear more responses from him. Just because it is tradition doe's not make it right or an excuses for an outdated pastime. What next will prisoners be hung in public because it was tradition, most of us have moved on to a more civilized thought process too bad some people in power around the world fall short of this... Keep the fight up Brian you're doing a good job All the best from Jason in Wanganui New Zealand.

+ThePigeonAnd FishingChannel I live in Sheffield, Lowedges. I see foxes trot past my front door every night when i stand at my door having a smoke.. I have three cats and they sit and look at the faxes and the foxes pay no attention to them what so ever. The foxes pass by me less than 5 feet away. I even whistle at them because they don'r see me with me being stood so still in the dark. They stop for a few seconds, transfixed on me and the cats who sit by me, then the fox will just trot off. They're small as fuck. My cats would probably win in a straight fight. Foxes are like little dogs basically. If foxes are a problem to you country folks then shoot the fuckers, don't be all sick and tare the cunts to bits for fun. Come on pal. Get fuckin real. Its cruel. You don't want to be cruel do you? End its life quick.

+ThePigeonAnd FishingChannel the only vermin are the people who throw rubbish out in the streets and then complain when wildlife takes advantage. The only vermin are the housing developers who destroy their habitat and then wonder why the wildlife has the temerity to wander into urban areas. The only vermin are the people who delight in chasing down an animal, watching it be torn to shreds and then try to justify it under conservation and protecting livestock. And why do they do this? Because they can. You also seem to fail to realise that foxes, most annoyingly for people like you, persist on being unable to understand the English language, don't see a farmer's bank balance sheet. They just see a meal. You don't want to see foxes in your area? They don't want to see YOU in their territory either. The only difference between them and humans is the foxes don't have a choice in the matter. So don't go blaming them.

Humans are supposed to be stewards of the animals, not owners. Animals are not ours to do with as we will. Animals belong to God, and should be treated with respect. Obviously, Brian knows this and acts accordingly and to his conscience.

+trippy119 He's just butthurt because Brian May had the temerity to defend foxes and he can't come up with anything more than the tiresme old argument that they are vermin and they attacked my pet etc etc. You also need to look at some of his screen name. Fishing. Where you take a creature out of it's environment, and leave it to suffocate to death on a river bank. Or you half suffocate it, then throw it back. To be caught and go through the same thing with someone else 50 yards downstream. How does it suffocate smart arse I hear you cry. Simple. Gills need to have a constant stream of water or at the very least kept moist, to allow them to function. Without water, the gills cannot perform their function, therefore they fail and the fish cannot breathe. It suffocates. Simple enough for you? Good. If you still don't get it ask a friend to hold you underwater for 3 minutes and then tell him how wonderful it was. If you're still alive of course.

Any practice that wages cruelty against the beautiful animals that grace this planet is vile and needs to stop. Brian is right, and riteous, about his beliefs about animal mistreatment and cruelty. It must not ever be abided. We need to listen to what Brian is telling us all. It's wrong. It's inhumane. It is revolting. It is massively damaging to our planet as a whole. Keep saying it, Brian. I applaud your dedication to the cause and using your celebrity to make a better world for all of us. Thank you for you.

Another interesting debate would be to discuss what purpose 'sport' serves. Is it something that truly unites us ? Or, is it something that serves to discriminate ? For me, sport has been about keeping fit and healthy, and the enjoyment of taking part... and yet now, sport is thrown into the headlines again because it's all about 'winning' at whatever cost. The ends appear to justify the means... whether that means diving to gain a penalty-kick or taking drugs.
