Brian May quizzed over badger cull

As one of the fiercest critics of the pilot badger cull, Queen's Brian May won't win any popularity contest with farmers. Farmers Weekly editor Jane King invited the rock star to the magazine's newsroom to debate the issue and challenge his views.

Fortunately, that this celebrity has much influence! Brian can be the spokesperson of many people! There are so many people who are against the slaughtering of badgers and that we don't bother to listen! Brian puts his fame to benefit of a noble cause and to which he believes! I'm with him of all my heart!

Last year in Irish Republic bTB fell by 55 cows out of 60 million - and this after killing 1 million badgers over 25 years.

I think it is highly commendable that Brian May is speaking out against the badger cull and I am delighted that he is giving his time to do this.. I do not agree that farmers wishes should take priority over everyone else's and they are motivated by financial profit and gain.. I hope enough people sign the petitions to try and stop this happening. It would be very sad to lose most of our badger population, when the problem of bovine TB needs to be solved in more effective ways..

We recently interviewed Brian May about the Gatcombe Farm project. A new approach to disease control on a dairy farm in Devon - taking out infective cows and minimising exposure to slurry - which has seen the herd attain TB-free status after six years of persistent breakdowns. I admire Brian May. His music is superb and he has an intellect to match, which no interviewer is ever really going to be able to contend with. However, he is so entrenched in his views that there is no way forward here. I know nothing of bovine TB, cows or agriculture, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that badgers would indeed be a vector for certain diseases and thus require controlling, like rats, deer, rabbits or any other wild animal who unwittingly create wider problems in nature by their presence and sheer numbers. Not that cow farming is natural, but much of the population depends upon it for a substantial part of their nutrition and to aspire to an alternative, whilst a positive thought, is unrealistic.

I'm definetely on Brian's side because he is trying very hard to stop people from killing these innocent, beautiful creatures. Why doesn't anyone understand that in doing that it will change things and complicate everything. I don't want to drink the cow milk either,Bri if it comes from that certain place... I am a vegetarian and I'm sticking with it...

Better farming techniques and less use of bovine antibiotics because what is happening is that these diseases are now becoming resistant. These farmers collect their milk and mix it with several different herds and then tested....so we should go back to single herd collection like raw milk suppliers. Isolate and test each herd and manage it by each farm....

Exert2020, she's perhaps doing what Brian May always does to farmers, hunters and country people who he doesn't himself agree with regarding many country issues. What does he know about Badgers? Many farmers haven't got the millions he has and he certaintly has no empathy whatsoever for the troubles many farmers and landowners face regarding financial ruin.England has one of the highest densities of Badgers in europe and they're far too protected by somewhat draconian laws.I cannot comprehend how many of these so-called celebrities with massive ego's jump on the band wagon and try to tell farmers how to run their own business. What would Brian May thing if a farmer tried to tell of how to paly a guitar? He certaintly wouldn't be too pleased. Before any of theso-called animal lovers start bleating and moaning, yes, i've seen the rock band "Queen" on 2 occasions and yes, they were excellent, however, Brian May certainly knows about his certain profession namely music. However, he certainly doesn't know anything about bovine tb or the countryside and that's a fact!

Badgers are an integral part of and an iconic species in our British countryside. They were here before the cattle and hopefully will be here long after the cattle. Let's be right about this, it's all about Money! If all the cattle were inoculated and stricter controls implemented on movement of cattle, the problem would be solved! It's been proved in other places. But, the farmers, government, and these people who all think they are right, just want to use the cheapest form of control, instead of using proper forms of control to benefit everyone including the Badgers. Land owners and farmers already kill badgers as a matter of course, they're shot and run over on sight ! their sets are blocked and destroyed by these callous so called and would have you believe, nature lovers and guardians of the countryside. LEAVE THE BADGERS ALONE!!!!!

Jim Burns you say it’s all about money...well that’s what all assholes say! Let’s be right about this, that most farmers are looking out for there cattle and they give a shit but you people don’t do you! Your like “LEAVE BADGERS ALONE!!!!!” When your acting like a twat! 1 badger that infected can kill 10/20 cattle and then they get slaughtered but people want the badgers to stay alive and run free not only to kill MORE cattle you fucking twat. 🙄

The only people who “need” cattle are the dairy/beef farmers themselves. I’m sure much of the general public would get on fine without beef and milk. This is about the farmers and the badgers, not about what the public “needs”.
