    Normally I would say you did the right thing dropping out at that price. But since you knew the seller was reputable, the risk in this case was less. I think he was worth the risk. Can you meet up with the buyer and look to buy him privately?. Buyer might be willing to sell him right away to make some money off of him. He's worth more than what he sold for.

    I completely agree with the decision of backing out. He is a gorgeous horse, but he is also a young-ish auction. You didn’t need to buy, your in a good place in terms of horses and space right now, if you really felt you need more for the lessons or trails then maybe you’d have bought him, but based on your current situation 20k on one horse without a vet check just wouldn’t have been the smartest decision. At least for that money he should be going to a good home and you still have space for another horse. There will always be more out there and the right one will come along, hopefully at a cheaper price.

  • @LegendHold1

    @LegendHold1

    He was certainly a very nice horse, but IMHO not worth $20K. I think he was probably one of the soundest horses there at the auction and I think that is what caught everyone's eye there. I don't think I would go this high without a complete vet check for soundness. I do hope he went to a nice home and it's sad when you had your heart sort of set on him...but the head says....nope it's not worth it. I'm sure you will find a gem like Beauty or Belle for a lot less.

And you're strong enough to make the hard decisions when I'm guessing every fiber in your horse-loving being wanted to take him home. He was beautiful. What a difference between the horse you considered but were concerned about the way he moved (and your vet agreed) and Leo's movement. Night and day difference. Thanks to your teaching on this channel, even I who have never owned a horse but have been besotted with them since I was 13 (I'm 63) could readily see the difference. I was with you to a point on purchase, but Kyle is correct in thinking, more land, a new tractor, new barn. Put the 20,000 in a separate account so you'll have when the land next to you goes up for sale. Kyle smiles. That boy was one of PURE LOVE and kudos to the raiser and trainer of that MAGNIFICENT LOVE BUG !

    If you were looking for one horse to have for years in lessons Leo be a good solid investment. He is well worth the price but is outside of your mission statement to develop and move along. So hard to stay within your purpose when you see a beautiful boy like him. Of course, it would also be different if Kyle wanted to ride more regularly. It’s hard to pass him by but you made a solid business choice. Blessings 🌺

    Ha ha! I watched it on my break at work. When Leo's bridle came off, I yelled out loud, "Aww Hell! That's not FAIR!" Everybody turned and looked at me like I was nuts. All I said was, "Don't judge. I'm bidding on a horse." Maybe I've been taking care of dementia patients for too long...

    I go with my heart and gut feeling, I would have bid 20k easy on him. What a beauty. In the end it comes down to you Shea, you are the owner, trainer and one that truly loves the horses. Sometimes there's not another like him, just another day at an auction and one more horse saying good-bye. Always.

    Well, there once was one perfect horse, Secretariat. I own a double great, great granddaughter. She also had perfect confirmation. She just delivered an extra-long legged Tonalist colt that is chestnut with back white sock, but gray front socks. He will going to be a gray like is grandsire Tapit.

    I agree I would never flip him either, my Hope is that who ever bought him gives him the home and care that he deserves!!! Drafts can be easily ruined, if the person who bought him doesn't know what they are doing. That is why I wanted you to have him for your program, he truly is perfect!!!!!! You truly are great at what you do,have an excellent eye for good horses. I knew you knew when u turned to Kyle and said I want him!! Make sure the guy that bought him paid for him and picked him up, cause if he didn't you may still be able to get him for a lot less. Yes horse sales could very well tank and even worse the way this country is going, horse could be in jeperdy. Glad u have the land to make your own hay (that back pasture would work if u have to) love you and your horse s❤🎉😢 thanks for sharing

    Shae, the horse you loved is from one of the best programs you will find for horses. Buckeye Acre Farms in Millersberg have consistent winners in their stables, and I have been watching their horses for years. I am waiting for my opportunity to find one of his horses I can afford. If that horse sold for 20,000 dollars, it was low. I have seen his horses go for 50 to 250 as an average. They sell at the big sales around the country. There is no trainer that will put a better finish on any horse than the Yoder program. No horse can guarantee to be foolproof but those Yoder trained horses are s close as it gets. They are handled by all the kids in the family, as well as the most comprehensive training, for all situations, you can imagine. Go look at the YTs of any horse in their program, it will show you how they are all trained. I am so sorry you did not wind up with that horse.

    Your comment prompted me to visit the Buckeye Acre Farm's website and I noticed parallels in their and Shea's respective missions. Both seek and buy horses that have the potential to be excellent performers and after the completion of training their value will have increased and they will be upsold: Leo is an example. Essie, Mushu, and Ariel all have the potential to be stellar performers. When and if Shea decides to sell them, prospective buyers need only look at their care and training as documented on YT.

    You made the right choice. My Dad would say "the day you buy is the day you sell", i.e. if you pay too much, you will never get your money back and with horses there is a possibility that they will injure themselves permanently and unless they are insured their value will drop to zero. Hard fact but true....

    I'm sorry you never got Leo, he was gorgeous, but you know had you had paid that money for him. You probably would have thought after, OMG what have I just done, you would have still loved him, I know, but think Kyle did the right thing and said no. An awful lot of money. I know how disappointed you must have been, but it will pass and something just as gorgeous is around the corner somewhere.❤❤ I bought my Rocky at auction in the UK and that was around 24 years ago. I never had a clue about horse auctions or what to look for. I got lucky with him, he's an old love bug and only cost £200 back then he has a home for life. :

Too bad, I would like that horse myself, and many others. They are all dream horses to me. Perhaps the next auction will have the horse meant to be yours. Keep up your spirits. Tomorrow is another day, full of horses. 🤗❤️
