The man is an icon…check out songs like Sweet Caroline, Cracklin’ Rosie, Song Sung Blue, Hot August Night/Brother Love’s Traveling Salvation Show, Holly Holy, Forever In Blue Jeans, Solitary Man, America…all great songs.. Pretty sure the line about the chair refers to Gestalt therapy, a form of psychoanalysis in which the patient does a bit of role play with an empty chair. There is the two- chair method for addressing inner conflict and the empty chair for addressing unfinished issues or business with others.

My teen daughter told me a story when she was in elementary school, maybe 4th grade. They played music during lunch sometimes. "Sweet Caroline" came on. Everyone in the cafeteria stopped what they were doing & sang the "bomp, bomp, bomp" with tune. We doubted they knew any of the lyrics, but they all knew that beat!

Also "Play Me", "Love On the Rocks", "Hello Again", "If You Know What I Mean". Also check out I Am... I Said official video. The studio version is excellent. This man write's poetry. Pure poetry. The phrase "I Am...I Said" is a cry to God ("I Am" -The name of God which He first told Moses in Exodus 3:14). He's crying out to God because he's so lonely and he feels like God is not there to hear his lonely cry. The psychiatrist ("The chair") isn't helping him either. No matter how he pleads he gets no help for his loneliness. So he's saying, "Oh God I'm so lonely! I don't know who I am, where I belong. I'm lost, alone, and hurting. Where are you?" That's the gist of the song. Many people have a time in their lives when they feel this way and this song is so relatable for that reason.

Neil has a reputation- he really shines before a live audience, finds an emotional place to share with a stadium full of folks . This may be the "deepest," most personal song he ever wrote. Career wise, he started out as a song writer. He wrote several of The Monkees' hits, ( mid-1960's ), then decided he could perform them better than they could. He had a LOT of hits, ( mid-60's rock), made a LOT of money, moved on to doing better, deeper stuff, SOLD OUT a bunch of LIVE tours in large arenas and stadiums. For a reccommendation, try one of the live concert versions of I've Been This Way Before.

I'm probably in the minority in that I almost always prefer the studio version--especially if the crowd is loud, and singing along, (like in "Sweet Caroline" live.) Part of what makes a song great is in the mixing that happens in the studio. "I Am, I Said" has so much soul-deep loneliness in it, the crowd just doesn't fit--even with the dramatic pauses. Not many celebrities are honored with a tribute play depicting their life story, until they are deceased. Neil has had MANY accolades…so well deserved. He is amazing and so humble. He was in therapy for most of his career thinking he was not good enough! Beautiful Noise was the song his little daughters named. They were in their New York apartment, window open, listening to street noises below. His daughter said isn’t that a beautiful Noise? You've heard the name. *I'm a believer* - *red red wine* and a crapton of songs he wrote other people sang. Seriously - I fell in love with Neil Diamond when I was 4. YOU must see *Saving Silverman*. Yes, it's dumb. Jack Black dumb but it's chock full of Neil Diamond. His story basically is "The Jazz singer* movie. He's also been in Jonathan Seagull. I've never gotten to see him live and it broke my heart when he announced he wouldn't be touring because of Parkinsons. Oh and Heartlight - ET's song. My fave songs of his are " And the grass won't mind" and "Play Me"
